This leather cello case, a top-of-the-line product from the French instrument case makerBam, is pricey, but just looking at it is healing. The owner is friendly and even makes his own instruments, and the sound is exquisite. I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for an instrument. I changed my cello two years ago, and since you recommended one made in Germany, I've been playing it really well. When I perform with the orchestra, people often say the sound is amazing, and even in competitions, the judges have complimented me on how beautiful the sound is. read more

I spoke with Dustin over the phone before first visit, and he was incredibly pleasant and thorough. He scheduled a trial lesson for my daughter, and we visited his violin shop shortly after. Both Dustin and the instructor, Ms. Heidi, were welcoming and allowed us to sit in during the trial lesson. Within just a few minutes, we felt confident that my daughter was in good hands. Dustin is professional, honest, and clearly passionate about what he does. We instantly loved the vibe, it's a place where music is truly appreciated. With a musical background myself and experience working at an instrument store during college, I was genuinely impressed. I enrolled my daughter for lessons right away. They offer flexible violin rentals for 3 to 6 months, and if you decide to buy later, Dustin can credit your rental payments toward the purchase. It's definitely worth it. read more

The service that was very professional and kind. The selection of violins and other sting instruments offered were absolutely amazing! The value to rent a violin is well worth the price! It included a protection plan so if anything may happen you can take it back and get assistance. read more

I first came to OC Violin back in 2013 or 2014 when I got my first 4/4 violin. I returned today to upgrade my instrument, and Dustin was as kind and helpful as ever! He was so accommodating and helped me test out three different violins to find which one best suited me (I ended up going with the first one he offered. How he just knew my perfect violin on the first try, I have no idea). The price is very reasonable, too, especially for such high quality instruments. I enjoyed conversing with Dustin as well. He has so much wisdom and assistance to share, and you can tell he's in this business because he truly has a passion for music and string instruments. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone interested in strings! read more

Dustin of the OC Violin shop clocked our experience the moment we told him our intentions: for her to learn the violin, in need of a rental. Dustin retreated back to his desk, no time wasted in tuning the violin my girlfriend needed. A case, violin, and instructions to send us off for her first violin lesson tonight. So many thanks to him for helping us on our journey. read more

Loved the service. I took a violin in that I haven't used in over a decade, and the owner tuned it up, polished it, adjusted the sound post, and it sounds great. I also got my bow rehaired and that came back lovely as well. Well worth the expense. read more

I've been going here for my violin lessons. My teacher (Jackie) is very kind and encouraging. Dustin is accommodating whenever I have to cancel a lesson. He recommended to reschedule and another time made a day "free" during the payment of next month's payments. read more

Love it here! My daughter wanted to learn violin. I bought her the cheapest violin I could find online. Fast forward, she practices every day, and once a week she stays at school after dismissal to work more on her violin. She worked so hard but the cheap violin was not giving justice. She has been saving money to buy a better violin. That's where OC VIOLIN SHOP saved us. With her savings, we went to OC Violin Shop. He helped us get the best violin base on our budget and a lot of add-ons. Mr. Choi encourages my daughter to practice, work hard and be better. That touched my heart. To all parents who have kids who are interested in learning violin. This is your place. read more

What a great violin shop. Outstanding customer service and selection. We really appreciated the ability to trade-in the violin for the next size up when our daughter outgrew her original one. The fee was very reasonable. Dustin the owner is incredibly helpful and friendly. I highly recommend OC Violin and will return here for all of our future purchases. read more

Brought in my daughter's 3/4 cello for a rehab. He evaluated it as a solid instrument and quoted a very reasonable price. However, he noted that she was probably ready for a 4/4 and let her try several cellos in my price range. She agreed they were comfortable and I opted to purchase a 4/4 instead of rehabbing the small one. He took the trade in at a fair value, and was patient with her deciding on which one she liked best. We got the cello, a new bow, and hard case for a super price. Absolutely no pressure to sell or upgrade or make any choices. Super kind, very knowledgeable, and fair value. I will definitely recommend! read more

This shop is a hidden gem! We came in to look at getting our daughter her own violin. When we walked in, it felt like we had just stepped into Geppetto's workshop! It's a wonderful shop! The owner is Dustin, and as soon as we came in, he greeted us with a smile. He asked us some questions-the most appreciated one being "what is your price range?" I felt like he understood that we are not all rich and was considerate of that. Dustin then had my daughter in a room trying out different violins right away! She tried out 4 different violins, and 3 bows. It's so interesting how the instruments kinda pick its owner. Her violin is a beautiful piece! The price was reasonable considering the item and I don't feel like we overpaid at all. I could see the pride Dustin has in his work, he makes the violins himself! What's even more amazing for me, is that my daughter is not one to have a full-on conversation with others, but Dustin and her were chatting for a good few minutes! He complimented her on her playing skills and was very encouraging! I could see that he made sure to tell her she could also play the viola and explained the sound that comes from that instrument too. Our instrument comes with a 1 year warranty and tune ups 2x a year. I'm so thankful OC violin shop was nearby, I'm VERY pleased with the entire experience! Thank you so much!!! read more

I brought my violin that I haven't used for a decade to see what replacements I needed to make it sound better. Dustin was very honest and accommodating, and I really valued that! Prices were very reasonable and I knew my instrument would be in good hands. He also helped make sure everything about the violin was in good shape in addition to the strings that I needed to replace. I also had my bow fixed up as well. It made my feel more confident about my instrument that I didn't need to buy a whole new one. I'll definitely be coming back here for any future violin concerns that I would have. Dustin was really kind and understanding. He knew what needed to be fixed and what didn't need to be fixed. I went to another violin shop before Dustin's, and got a quote to replace a lot of parts of my violin, and I felt like they were overselling. But here, I didn't feel that at all. He was aware of my situation, my violin level, and what would best fit my needs. Definitely recommend it here! read more

We were in search of an affordable and nice quality viola, luckily we came across Dustin's (the owner) shop. There is no doubt he is a professional and trustworthy. Very generous and considerate, he was willing to accommodate to our price range, as well as giving us complimentary items (rosin and head rest). You will not find any complaints with his friendly and helpful customer service. We will definitely come back for any future concerns in regards to our strings instruments! Thank you Dustin! read more

Dustin was very nice and polite. I went for a bow rehair and the turnaround was 1 business day.

Normally, I never leave reviews, but this time I felt I had to because this place is spectacular. I hope this review helps you decide on a place for your stringed instruments' needs. This was my first time coming here. My teacher had brought my instrument here before for a bridge and neck repair, and I loved the sound that I was able to get. Unfortunately, a steel D string cut into the bridge. Up until today, I've been using a poorly fitted bridge. So I decided to bring my violin in for its second bridge repair. Best choice I've ever made. When I first walked in, I was immediately greeted with a smile by Mr. Dustin Choi. I told him that I wanted a new bridge cut, and he immediately took notes. No nonsense. He didn't ask unnecessary questions and he knew exactly what needed to be done when he checked it out. He even gave me the choice of bridge I wanted. Extremely polite and kind. I was out of there in 3 minutes flat. Came back in 2 hours to a job well done. He did the job well, and even weny out of his way to touch up nicks and scratches on my violin and polish the violin. He even fixed the buzzing noise that had plagued me for months, which I learned today was due to my peg acessories coming loose. And he only charged me for the price of the bridge, which was a good price for his workmanship. Most amazing strings shop you could have in OC. I was not paid to leave this review, I want people who are looking for a reputable violin repair shop to know that what you get from Mr. Choi is worth the money and effort that you put forth. Most other general music stores don't come close to the customer service, professionalism, and expertise that Mr. Choi provides. I will certainly be coming back here for all of my violin needs, and will be recommending him to all of my friends. Don't go anywhere else. Get your instrument repaired with expertise at OC Violin Shop. Trust me, it'll be worth it. read more

I am thoroughly satisfied with the customer service here! Mr. Choi repainted the fingerboard on my cello for a very fair and low price. He was very patient in listening to my experiences with my cello, and gave a thorough analysis of my cello's quality. He is a very knowledgeable luthier from analyzing the type of woods to smaller details like correct purfling, which he described helps to prevent cracking. Thank you Mr. Choi for such the honesty and integrity of your service! read more

Very nice nice man!! Good customer service and Good variety of violins to choose from

Purchased my son his Cello today. Amazing price for the quality sound and quality workmanship. My husband and I were going to purchase a Mendini from Amazon. But Id imagine the quality would be subpar as I had purchased my daughter a 1/4 violin from the same manufacturer. Of course if you dont wish to break your bank you can opt for a cheaper model. But seeing as Amazon had sold out on 1/2 cellos (and were being sold at $300+), I decided to come by today and check out their pricing. I came about this place on Yelp, while trying to find businesses who teach Cello. The cello is an exquisite and beautiful instrument, it can be a pricey investment due to many factors. From limited instructors, pricey lessons, locations on where to find one, and the most obvious...pricing! Of course as a parent to a 7 year old, one must give a lot of thought before investing on a $200+ instrument on an indecisive, short attention spaned, growing child. After a couple weeks of research, thought, and constant interrogation (from me to my son). We decided to go through with it. What I loved about this place...the environment, the attentiveness, the delicacies, and of course the string instruments. I was fabulously overwhelmed by all the Violins, Violas, Cellos, and Bass. They had all of it, from bows to books to cases. Walls were lined with string instruments and across the entrance, a work station for the artist behind these string beauties. Now on the most important details. The owner was extremely nice, helpful, and comprehensive. Were a bit financially strapped so his Rent to Own program worked perfect for us. We paid the first 3 months down, and will pay $45 a month until its paid off. The cello came with a storage bag, rosin, bow, and strings. He was even kind enough to give us a cleaning cloth and tag, in case my sons cello gets lost. :) But the best thing about it all was that my son left the store extremely excited and happy. As soon as we got home he began playing with his cello. He has yet to learn, but I hope to enroll him in lessons soon. As soon as I find an instructor... read more

Dustin was very friendly. I didn't know anything about viola, and he helped me pick the right viola for me. I didn't feel pressured to buy expensive, new viola. I purchased a used viola that he crafted instead, and it's still in good condition. They offer lessons too. After seeing all the positive reviews from violinists and cellists about their respective purchases, I took a risk and bought a 3/4 double bass here. Like them, I got a reasonably priced instrument with a rich, resonant sound. The icing on the cake though was that before I even mentioned it, the owner asked if I wanted a mute so that I wouldn't bother my neighbors when I practiced! A+++ for top-notch prices, instruments, and service! read more

Recommended by an accomplished musician friend of mine and I am very pleased with our experience. Dustin obvious is a professional and loves what he does. My daughter already plays piano and is now going to learn violin. Dustin was very patient, kind, and explained everything to both my daughter and I thoroughly. He showed her the violin, tried two sizes he thought would be right, and showed her how to handle it and adjust the bow, etc. He had several students already practicing and the shop is filled wall to wall with beautiful string instruments. Highly recommended. read more
