If you're reading this review because you're trying to decide whether to sign up yourself or your child for piano lessons with Jeff, my advice to you is DO IT! Do it and never look back! I took piano lessons with Jeff from age 5-18, and in that time, he became one of the most important mentors of my life. Jeff is a patient, supportive, and adaptable teacher. Around the age of 6, I wrote an amusingly simple song (if we can even call it that--it was only 4 measures long!) about dolphins. Rather than laughing it off, or giving me a nice pat on the back, Jeff took this proclivity for songwriting seriously. He challenged me to create sheet music for my song, and when it was complete, he framed it and hung it up on the wall of his office. Sometimes I was a bad piano student. Partially because I had a very heavy academic load, and partially because all I wanted to do was write my own songs instead of practicing scales and new pieces. Jeff worked hard to make sure music could fit into my life--he was always flexible when I needed to shift my practice schedule for school commitments and debate tournaments. Rather than scolding me for writing songs when I should have been building up my classical repertoire, he made me a deal: if I wanted to be a songwriter, then I needed to write sheet music for my songs, I needed to record and produce my songs, and I needed to take it seriously as a craft. One weekend, he came over and showed my parents and me how to produce music in GarageBand. Then, we decided together that I would spend half my lesson time on songwriting, and the other half on the building blocks that I still very much needed as a pianist and musician. The result of Jeff's adaptable approach is that I not only passed my AP and IB music courses (focusing on theory and fundamentals) with flying colors, but I also became a singer-songwriter. Today, at 26 years old, I have a degree from Stanford University, and I work in the music technology industry, where I flex the audio engineering muscles that Jeff helped me build. I also have a band, and thanks to the years of lessons I took with Jeff, I have the music theory fundamentals needed to communicate and collaborate with my bandmates. Most importantly, I have a lifelong love of music--it is embedded in my soul and identity. I can't say enough good things about Jeff as a person, mentor, teacher, and friend. Jeff Harrison has been our piano teacher for at least 7 years, starting with my grandson and continuing with his younger sister. These kids not only learned how to play the piano and learn music theory but they were also given the confidence to perform solo at the ages of 10 and 11 on stage in front of 800+ people playing beautifully for their audiences. My granddaughter learned to play Claire de Lune for her great grandmother's 90th birthday. Jeff was patient, encouraging and full of enthusiasm for her to tackle a rather difficult piece. She learned it well and brought tears to all who were there at the party, especially her great grandmother who had played the same song 80 years ago for her first recital. Our family has developed a deep love for music due to Jeff's influence and encouragement. My grandson moved on to play electric and classical guitar and his sister is now in her third year of clarinet. Both kids learned new instruments rather easily due to the musical foundations Jeff instilled in them. It is such an enjoyable moment when the practice and polish come together due to the lessons and encouragement from a wonderful teacher, mentor, and coach. I met Jeff through Fullerton Music over 29 years ago. I started lessons as an adult and quickly realized I chose the perfect instructor. He understands the issues of a beginning adult-student, (home, work, kids etc.) He developed a lesson plan which fit the style and type of music I wanted to play, which, coupled with his desire to teach me scales, rhythm, and music theory, brought me to a level we were both happy and excited with. Jeff Harrison is a FANTASTIC instructor. I took lessons with him for over four years or so. I came to Jeff being classically trained previously since the age of eight, so I had a bit of a foundation before I began. BUT...don't let this discourage you if you are a beginner; Jeff handles ALL skill levels very well. He has an extremely efficient teaching method that helps pianists learn multiple skills in different categories/genres such as scales, chordal theory, music theory, pop music, classical, jazz, improvisation and others. My most favorite skill I learned from Jeff is chord voicing. This is a very useful skill that allows the pianist to play just about any popular song they wish as long as they know the chords. It's amazing that I can now listen to just about any song and I can play my own version of it. I am very thankful for this skill that Jeff has taught me. All in all, Jeff will make you a better pianist for a reasonable cost as long as you are invested into the art of piano. Jeff is very patient and knowledgeable and is open to developing you into a technical/creative pianist both physically and mentally. I took lessons with Jeff for 6 years. Before I found him, I had bounced around with several other teachers trying to find the right fit; suffice it to say, after a few lessons with Jeff, I knew I'd stick around. The first thing I love about Jeff is how process-oriented he is. With him, the goal isn't to merely play a piece perfectly, but to know how to get to that point methodically and repeatably. He tried to cultivate an ear and a passion for music, using whatever genre caught my interest (art music, pop, jazz, etc.) He even taught me how to play for a wedding I was asked to perform at! Also, I had a very hectic schedule in high school, and Jeff was always very willing to work around sports practice, after school activities, etc. There really is no understating his patience. I am a Piano Tuner Technician. Have been for 42 years. I know over 40 teachers in Orange County. I get asked weekly for referrals for a Piano Teacher. I hate giving referrals. It reflects on you personally. What I typically do is tell people, "Look, I do know a teacher in your area. Whether or not they are a good teacher or not, truth is I don't really know." As far as recommendations go, there are only 2 teachers in this entire county I am confident enough to say that I recommend. Jeff is one of the two.
