Terrific teacher. I started with Larry many many years ago when all I wanted to do was learn some picking patterns. But very soon I was deep into theory as well as learning picking patterns and many songs that I wanted to learn as well as many that I hadn't considered when I started. If he didn't know a song I wanted to learn, he did by the next class or two. He would not only teach the song to me, he would write up the tab for me in my notebook. I learned a ton very quickly. Holy wow! Look, I'll be honest--I took lessons from Larry about 40 years ago, and I had no idea he was still teaching until I stumbled onto this review. Larry was a great teacher back then. I don't think he ever taught me one freakin' song--he focused all on music theory. But what he did teach me got me to a point where I learned how to write my own tunes, play them, sing them, and even arrange them for a band. Even did a little recording. Dudes with record contracts told me I had the "chops" to make it. Jeez, I gave up after I got married, because she hated the time I spent. (She didn't last long, BTW). I haven't played in about 25 years, but I still remember the lessons I took from Larry. I still remember some of the things he taught me about rhythm and modes like Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. And how the guys on famous hit records were playing their music "wrong" according to Larry. ;) On top of that, he was an amazing player! I'm an old man now, but I might pick up a guitar or two and contact Larry again, so he can reteach me what I've forgotten. But this time, I'd make him teach me some actual songs! read more

Lots of people teach guitar, but Larry Samson teaches you how to play. He knows a lot, that's for sure, and he will develop your musical foundation, definitely. But what he gives to you is musicality through method and perception. He'll explain why something is a certain way, not just how to do it. He'll set you up to hear it in your head and then be able to make the sound happen. And then teach you how to make it yours. I first took lessons from him in the 90's, and during the years since I've seen enough other teachers at to know I was well grounded to play with what I learned. Now, going through a second round years later, I've found a new voice through playing. And I have Larry to thank for that. You gotta find the right teacher, and not everyone is a perfect fit. I've been coming to Larry for Guitar Lessons for a bit over three months now. I had zero experience with guitar and wanted to do something special for my GF I am very impressed how Larry structures down his lessons. Nothing he teaches do I feel like is over my head. I've been taking guitar lessons from Larry for about a year now and I can't recommend a better teacher for any level of student. I didn't know what to expect and was honestly a little nervous to go to that first lesson (an in-person pre-Covid lesson), but Larry has the ability to put anyone at ease. He makes it clear that you as a student are important and he's there to help you learn, you're not there for him to impart his knowledge unto you and impress him with your progress. In other words he's super chill but insanely knowledgeable. Larry is an incredible musician and teacher who's able to analyze your form and technique to understand why something isn't sounding right. He can easily communicate fixes you need to make to get you to sound better and also to help you be more aware of how your form affects the sound. Just as an example, last week (via Zoom) he noticed that I wasn't adjusting the angle of my pick to strum at a soft enough volume for the song I'm working on ('Times Like These'). A tiny detail he spotted that changed everything. When you sign up with Larry be ready to jump right in. Within 20 minutes of my first lesson I had already learned 5 chords. And within 2 months I was already working on playing 'Redemption Song' by Bob Marley. Now almost a year later, I've learned more chords, riffs, techniques, songs, not to mention theory and music production knowledge.
