I met up with my bestie for dinner at Oc A Chay. She lives close to the area, but she wanted to come here with a Vietnamese to be able to order all the good dishes. They are located in the same plaza as CVS, Tam's Noodle House and Dim Sum Box. There was sufficient amount of private parking for the plaza. When we first arrived, there was a lot of seats open. The staff was friendly and welcoming and said we can sit anywhere we would like. Phuong and Dat helped us the entire night and the service was fantastic. I recommend coming early because they did get busy and by the time we left every table was filled. The energy here is definitely upbeat and a great place to hang and catch up with friends. We had an incredible feast and would come back to reorder all of the dishes we tried this visit and more: Goi Xoai Muc ($15.99) - Mango salad with squid. Very light and refreshing. This is an unripe mango thinly cut and mixed in with traditional Vietnamese herbs. It also comes with some shrimp chips to funnel up this delicious salad. Oc Mong Tay Mo Hanh ($18.99) - Razor clams grilled with scallion oil. One of the least flavorful items by compare. Both my friend and I felt like the scallion oil was very light on these razor clams but enjoyed it with the sauces from other dishes. Oc Mo Bo Toi ($24.99) - Fat snails prepared garlic butter style. Delicious. These bigger snails makes them easier to pick them out with the skewers they serve this with. Ngheu Xao Bo Toi ($16.99) - Clams prepared garlic butter style. Yum. Juicier compared to the snails and absorbs the sauce well. The clam shell makes it easy to scoop up the sauce and drink it. Oc Len Xao Dua ($16.99) - Sea snails in a coconut milk sauce. One of my favorites but I know it's one of the more difficult ones to eat, cause you'll have to suck on it really hard to get the snail out. But the sauce is delicious and unique. So Diep Trung Cut ($15.99) - Scallops with quail eggs. Highly recommended by staff, They mentioned this was a popular dish. Very decadent. It was a smidge too much food for 2 people but when I asked my friend if she would remove anything, she mentioned it was all a good variety for the meal. I've been to Oc and Lau in Orange County several times so I was thrilled when I heard a similar concept opened up in the SGV. The restaurant is good for large groups and has many TVs so it was nice for watching FIFA games. We ordered the oc mong tay nuong mo hanh (razor clams), oc huong (babylon snails), so diep (grilled scallops), oc lau hap sa, hau (oysters), lau thai (hot pot), bo nuong than (grilled beef), nghieu hap (steamed clams), and two pitchers of the passion fruit soda (chanh day). I thought it would be enough for our party for 7 but portions were so small so I doubled each order. The razor clams were probably the most flavorful while the other seafood items fell flat and bland. I'm not sure if the chef didn't let it seep thoroughly in the sauce but it wasn't busy at 5 pm when we came in so there was not rush hour. My biggest gripe was that the hot pot came with the tiniest portions of vegetables. Prices are quite high and I've been to other places recently with a larger party so I was quite disappointed. I was looking for a Vietnamese food spot in the area, and the high ratings convinced me to stop by. I was also craving mussels and I knew that I had to order them from here. We were seated right away on a Thursday night. Heads up, the menu could feel overwhelming because there were so many dishes that claim to be their 'best-seller.' The first dish we had was the Bun Bo Hue, and this made a great impression. The broth was well-seasoned, meat portions were generous, and honestly this had me excited for everything else that was coming. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal didn't quite live up to that first dish. We ordered the "Fried Rice with 8 treasures," and as someone who is not too picky with rice dishes, this one fell short for me. It lacked any form of seasoning and depth. I added the sauce on the side with some pepper to the rice and that still did not add much flavor. We also ordered the fried fish balls with quail eggs, mango salad, and finally the clams. The mango salad was refreshing and probably the only dish I would get again after the bun bo hue. Our fried fish balls with quail eggs were a little too dense and chewy for my liking. The clams were overcooked and turned rubbery. Service throughout the meal was attentive. I really wanted to love this place because I had a particular craving for mussels that night. I'm one for eclectic exotic foods and OC A Chay delivered! I drove an hour to get here from West LA and I would do it again. Very worth it for authentic Vietnamese food! I came here for snails and their egg yolk sauce was phenomenal. Highly recommend this sauce! I ordered fried chicken feet and while the flavor was good there isn't much meat after the frying so I probably wouldn't get it again. Congee was flavorful as well. I also tried the bun bo hue. It was good but not the best I've had. Personally I thought it could use a little more funk/shrimp paste. I love that they gave generous amount of rau ram leaves with every order. I dined at Oc & Lau once in Westminister. I loved their food! When I read about Oc A Chay in San Gabriel, I was so excited. I thought maybe they were the same restaurant, but they are not. I am a big seafood fan so my eyes were on them mostly. I wanted to try all their best sellers. I may have missed a few, but we got 11 dishes total which I was very pleased with for the most part. The high ratings are what brought me here in the first place. My eyes always light up anytime I see razor clams on a menu, so I was excited to give this place a try. We were seated right away when we arrived, although it took a while before anyone came to take our order. We started with the sizzling razor clams, and honestly, they were the highlight of the meal, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, and a great start. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue, and it really missed the mark. Several ingredients felt poorly prepared. The tendon was so tough it was basically inedible and had to be pushed aside. The pork blood tasted like it had been cooked separately since it had none of the broth flavor soaked into it. Even the beef slices felt out of place, almost like they had been pulled from a pho bowl and dropped into the BBH at the last minute. The broth itself lacked the richness, spice, and strong lemongrass flavor that normally makes Bun Bo Hue stand out. It just tasted flat. There was also a mix-up with our order when the wrong dish came out instead of the lobster. When the lobster finally arrived, it was badly overcooked and much smaller than what was shown on the menu. On top of that, the music was blasting the entire time, no one really checked in to see how things were going, and it took multiple attempts just to get our check. I was glad to hear there was a new quán nhậu in SGV. I was hoping this one will be good enough, so I wouldn't have to drive all the way to OC anymore. While this is the best of its kind in the area, it still has some catching up to do on flavor and execution. The mango salad with squid needed a bit more fish sauce in their nuoc cham. Squid was tender and the mango was fresh and crunchy. Overall the dish was a bit bland. The bo loc lac was made using filet mignon which is the perfect cut for this dish. It was also cooked to a medium rare which made it very tender. However, I don't think the wok was hot enough because the meat tasted boiled and not wok fried. Friendly service, didn't have to wait so long on a Friday night. They do take reservations if your planning on coming a head of time same day. Taste of the food was ok but not fresh. Seafood tastes frozen. The coconut snail looked nothing like the photo and the snails was not fresh very green inside. Our scallop with fish roe came out half cooked it was still frozen in the center. Typically the steamed scallops are one big scallop but these were several mini scallops which are frozen and low value. I'd say skip! We also ordered the hot stone bun bo hue which was the only decent food along with the crab vermicell. Vibe is moderately loud, but manageable everyone just talks loudly. Decently clean. OVERALL portions are very small. I would say this is nothing compared to OC Lau in garden grove. Glad to find this spot and I had it with the Sichuan sauce; it was more like a Thai chili sauce plus a special green sauce but it went really well with the dish. The seven of us shared a wide spread, including razor clams, grilled mussels, cheese shrimp, grilled garlic beef, scallops with quail eggs, grilled octopus, roasted peanuts, crab fried rice, a mushroom hot pot, and a couple of other clam dishes. I probably wouldn't reorder the chewy beef or some of the clam dishes, but everything else was decent. The presentation was nice, though some dishes could use a bit more punch in flavor. We actually ordered four dishes, but only three came out: razor clams, scallops with quail eggs, and Bun bo Hue Mo Lan (their signature Hue style beef noodle soup). Unfortunately, our first experience didn't live up to the hype. Both the noodles and razor clams were very bland, and we were really hoping the seasoning could be adjusted. The scallops with quail eggs were tasty, but it felt like mostly quail eggs with very few tiny baby scallops. For the prices they charge, the seafood portions were surprisingly small. We left feeling hungry. We really wanted to love this place and hope it was just an off day, but based on this visit, it didn't quite hit the mark. Ambiance - Lackluster but they recently opened so maybe they'll put in more deco or make it better along the way. Using some low hanging lights instead of recessed ceiling lights would give the overall vibe a better feel. Chairs and tables are wood with cushioning. I don't love the pink and blue chairs randomly inserted in as it doesn't feel like they fit in with the dark wood. However, cleanliness is excellent. They use a parchment type paper for you so you can freely spit out any shells and whatnot onto the paper if needed. Food - Butter garlic Tofu: I initially thought this was a dry dish but it's saucy. The taste is good overall but you can tell they use some kind of margarine instead of butter. It hits you with that fake butter/margarine taste. I do get some garlic taste and the soft onions are nice. It's not a bad dish? It's nice if you don't mind the taste of margarine but easy to get sick of. Savory and fragrant in its own right. Fries with cheese powder: The fry is good/basic. Not soft but not super crispy. They're about right. Cheese powder has zero taste to it except a vague undertone of creaminess. If you blind folded me, I wouldn't be able to really tell they have anything on them. Garlic Chicken Gizzards: My mom's review - "Fragrant and tasty. They have a nice chew to them with a good flavor." Stone Bowl Bun Bo Hue: The bowl keeps it super hot for much longer. A fun little difference from the regular bowl. Mom's review "Broth is super flavorful and tastes right. The pork hock is also good since many other places cook it separately from the broth, it tends to lack a taste besides meat but they seem to do it correctly here. There's a good amount of spice! A relatively new restaurant that is going for a Vietnamese street food vibe, with various snails as the specialty along with clams and other seafoods, noodles, rice. We were seated pretty quickly, but after that everything with service took a long time. I know it was a relatively busy time on a Saturday night, but it should not take about 20 minutes before we even got our order taken, and it was so difficult to get the waiters to bring out waters, napkins, extra dishes or bowls, and even the check. The food was just ok. The mango and squid salad was actually probably the best one, good mix of sweet and savory, lots of crispy garlic that goes well with the dish. The scallops with quail egg was too runny for my taste, and the sliced Babylon snails barely had any snails in it and didn't taste like it contained any snails. Also did not routinely come with sliced bread, and for these reasons I think it is very expensive and not worth the price of what you're getting. With the extremely slow service mediocre expensive food, I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. read more

I've been super excited to try this spot as I have heard good things and I do not have to drive down to OC. The interior is a bit confusing because they still have some HK decor, but the inside was very clean! My favorite dish was definitely the squid cartilage. I love the texture and the sauce that it comes with. They provide a baguette to soak up all the yummy goodness. This particular dish comes with their green sauce that was super bright and spicy. We got the clams with the peanuts next and it was yummy too. It comes on a sizzling plate and keeps the seafood very hot. We also got this soup with huge bone pieces. Plenty of meat and the soup was sweet and sour. The crab fried rice was so yummy and a great way to end the meal on some carbs. The beef slices were so tender and flavored. Definitely best eaten hot and fresh. You can't have this meal without a drink. The peach orange lemongrass tea was so delicious and refreshing. read more

For a small place, they sure have a lot of delicious seafood! All were cooked to perfection. I didn't do any of the ordering, but here's what I remember. Grilled squid, snails in butter sauce, clams in a soup, the long clams, papaya salad, and a vermicelli dish. Service was good. The place was clean. Happy hour before 5 pm. We were so excited to try this new spot--and it absolutely delivered. Since moving away from OC, I've seriously missed a solid Vietnamese restaurant, so I was beyond happy to see one open here. We ordered the ong choy, chicken cartilage, bún bò Huế, coconut snails, crab fried rice, fried frog legs, razor clams, and sweet potato fries... and every single dish hit Everything was good, and we're already planning a return to try more from the menu. The service was just as amazing--the owner was incredibly kind and even treated us to some complimentary drinks. Ambiance was great lively and they play all the good songs. I bought 3 pounds of crawfish from here today because I was told they had fresh live crawfish available. I placed a to-go order, but after ordering, the employee came back and said they had run out of the garlic sauce and that I would need to wait an hour. I told him I did not want to wait and asked if they could just steam the crawfish instead. When I received the order, the crawfish was covered in a different herbal-style sauce, which was fine. Normally, I do not mind the seasoning as long as the crawfish is fresh. Unfortunately, the crawfish they sold me tasted frozen, not fresh. I was very disappointed because I specifically came for fresh live crawfish. I hate giving bad reviews. Just felt ripped off. I do not recommend their crawfish. read more

Amazing flavors and exceptional customer service! Have been meaning to try this restaurant for quite some time. The server was very knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us to dishes that go well with our palate. The fish cake with crispy rice is a must try--- super crunchy and somewhat sticky rice to mellow out the flavorful fish cake. The shrimp and egg fried rice has a more Thai fried rice flavor profile but still very good. Their scallop with quail egg also exploded with flavor. Everything is a 5/5.
