Sushi in the display (Thursday 7PM)
Michelle T.

Obox Sushi is located in the Newport Mall Food Court and specializes in "grab-and-go" sushi! I went around lunchtime on a weekday and there were a lot of sushi options including uramaki, nigiri, and maki. There were also sushi chefs continuously making fresh sushi and free sushi samples. I thought the sushi itself was fairly average. It's not as bad as typical grocery store sushi but it's not as good as restaurant sushi (nowhere near as good as sushi you might find in Japan). I got a raw salmon & tuna nigiri set which was beautifully plated but a bit pricey at $12. The sushi rice had a strange flavor and was really "gummy" or sticky. The fish itself seemed okay - it was cold and didn't smell bad. There was a different smell but I just attributed it to the packaging. The sashimi actually seemed to taste pretty fresh. However, I had a stomach ache half an hour after eating the sushi and I'm not sure why. (I'm writing this review 6 hours after my lunch and my stomach is still strange. I will update this review if it gets worse, but so far everything seems fine). I also had an $8 shrimp tempura roll which wasn't wrapped tightly enough and kind of fell apart when I tried to pick it up with chopsticks. The shrimp inside was also very soggy but I expected it from refrigerated sushi. I don't think the rolls here are amazing but I do think that Obox is a great quick sushi spot for people who are on the go. While pricey, the sushi packages look beautiful and there are a variety of options to choose from.

Tuna roll with sauce( forgot name)

The sushi here tasted old. I ordered sushi with some sauce (forgot the name) and it tasted old. I definitely do not recommend. Also I don't want to be mean but the staff barely understood anything I was asking and it was frustrating.

The sushi is fresh and size of the fish on the nigiri is better than most "to go" sushi places. Must have if you're in the mall

The pacing of the meal for the quantity of food received seemed very rushed, and we didn't really have a chance to relax and enjoy any of the courses. However, the quality of the experience was a complete disaster particularly for the price. Clearly, the packed restaurant would disagree, but for the four of us anyway, we would not return. It started with the check in process at what felt like a long hotel front desk with multiple, self important hosts and hostesses overseeing your entrance to the cavernous bar/waiting area. One problem is the noise is so deafening that you can't really hear what they say to you but we check in a few minutes early and waited obediently in the bar area chatting. After about 30 minutes (15 after our reservation time), and watching numerous parties large and small who arrived after us be seated by the hostesses wandering through the dimly lit space who peer quizzically and ask your name, my husband went to ask for an update. (We joked that those vibrating lighted buzzers alerting when your table was ready would have been super helpful, but it was amusing to watch while we waited). It was clear they somehow lost track of us as she had him repeatedly spell our (not unusual) name. Anyway, after that, within 10 minutes after that we were taken downstairs to our seats (but not before standing awkwardly in the large dining area near packed tables waiting while our table was cleaned). Server with a heavy accent was kind and mostly helpful so none of this is on him. The busser who managed to spill half a pitcher of cold water on my husband's back, soaking his shirt and jacket and barely apologizing, is a whole other story. We managed to get a glass of his mediocre Cabernet comped for the experience. If I sound annoyed, I guess I still am. I had high hopes for a fun and tasty experience in a cool part of the city and it just wasn't.

Perfectly cooked, crispy without being oily, and packed with layers of flavor. The caviar might sound extra, but it makes total sense here, adding this salty, savory pop that turns each bite into something special. For noodles, we split paths: I went with the Wagyu Ramyun. Rich, beefy, deeply satisfying, basically comfort food dialed way up. My wife ordered the Gochu Ramyun, which was spicy, soulful, and loaded with pork belly so soft it practically melts on contact. We were very please with our meal and it was better than we remembered.

Each bite was divine and I genuinely got sad as the dish was being finished. Super flavorful, each bite was literally perfection. Mushroom ramyun was good during the first few bites, but it started to get rlly salty. The lime does help lessen the saltiness, but each bite did seem to progressively get saltier. It came with a lot of mushrooms and different varieties as well which I rlly liked! The thin noodles were also cooked nicely. Lobster ramyun was also rlly delicious during the first few bites, but got progressively got saltier and heavier. The sauce is almost like a bisque, but with a slight kick which I quite enjoyed. Noodles were cooked to perfection, a lil thicker cut, and nice and chewy! The toro ssam bap was definitely the highlight and michelin1 worthy. The other dishes were still delicious but i did find myself continuously drinking water after each bite. Service was ofc excellent and thorough.

If I had to give the old catch a rating it would be 2/5 stars. However, the new catch, the one that went through a total top down renovation, this place is an easy 5/5. The ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful, it gives off like a rich yacht vibe, wood accents, green coloring and just a wonderful scenery. They made more space for customers, you don't sit one on top of the other, there's plenty of space and the chairs / booths are super comfortable. The drinks are amazing, they are made extremely well, we quite literally tried everything on the menu, all of it is incredible!!! I love the bao buns, the rolls and sushi a sashimi! Their sea bass is one of the best I ever had, the steak honestly was a let down I would not recommend it, but surprisingly the truffle butter was better than anything I've had from any steak house. The hit me cake is also so much fun and delicious, the fudge is out of this world. We have already been twice and will be looking forward to our third time! They really did a successful turn around

Amazing ambiance inside (I ADORED the gold hanging decor on the ceiling) Bathrooms were very clean and staff was so efficient and friendly. They refilled water all the time and brought out food very quickly. We were celebrating a birthday but there was nothing brought out, so I don't think they have that kind of service here. So when the server asked us what we'd like to drink, we asked for hot water (later found out we were charged $1 for each cup of hot water). We ordered the beef rendang, chicken satay and singapore noodles (with tofu and vegetables). I had been hoping to try the soft shelled crab but perhaps it's out of season or no longer on the menu as I didn't see it. The chicken satay came out first, it was 4 sticks of skewered chicken drenched in a slightly spicy creamy peanut sauce. This was the second favorite dish of the table as the chicken was tender and the peanut sauce paired well with it. The singapore noodles were unexpected the favorite of the table. The flavor profiles weren't too crazy just a simple curry flavor but mixed with the thin noodles and other ingredients, it was savory and not too heavy to eat a lot of. The beef rendang was the last dish to come out, the beef pieces were very tender and this was the spiciest dish out of all 3 that we had ordered. It came with about a bowl's worth of white rice on the side and some cucumbers and purple cabbage salad. It was a pretty okay lunch. Not the best Malaysian food I've had (Chinatown is still the best spot for me) but it's a good spot if you're craving Malaysian food in the west village area. Bathrooms were immaculately clean which is always a plus.
