From start to finish, the experience was great. My bf and I were craving some ramen on a cold day. The space is super spacious and plenty of seats for small groups or big groups. Service was quick and we got our food super fast. ORDERED Black ramen - SO GOOD. Small difference from tonkotsu bc it has bonito flakes so it has a darker less creamy taste but still amazing. Tonkotsu - for sure can't go wrong with this. Creamy salty taste that satisfies every ramen bone in the body. Noodles perfect cooked not too soggy. Each bowl came with a tea egg which was to die for. Solid place for ramen! They have a huge, open space with lots of seating. You order at the counter and then pick up your food when they call your number. Location: Located across the street from Newport Center and minutes away from the Newport Path station, Menya Sandaime is centrally located and easy to access for people living in Jersey City or Newport. Food: I order the Tonkotsu ramen - the Tonkotsu ramen came in a large bowl and contained the ramen, broth, a few pieces of chashu pork, the boiled egg and several pieces of spinach. Although not a traditional ramen ingredient, the spinach added a lot of color to the ramen and much-needed vegetables to the dish. The tonkotsu ramen broth and noodles were both very satisfying. Overall, I thought the tonkotsu ramen was definitely better than what I would expect for a small, local ramen store, and it definitely rivals the flavors I have tasted at larger name brands, like Ippudo. I was confused about the vegetables they put on top as they seemed kind of like a salad for the ramen. - Gyoza - But why was this the best thing there? I haven't had gyoza for awhile, so I decided to order it and it was honestly so good. The crispy and oily dough that barely touches the grill is my favorite. The filling was incredibly juicy and when you bit into it, it's like drinking soup. If I had to come back, maybe I would just order gyoza haha. - Karage - Their karage is pretty dang good. They give you a ton of pieces in each order (if you order large) and the outside is very crispy while the inside of the chicken is very tender. Holy Ramen deliciousness! I really didn't expect much and was pleasantly surprised. Walk up to the counter and place your order then sit and wait about 10 minutes for your order number to be called, then walk back up to the counter and retrieve your giant bowl of deliciousness! I ordered the Veggie Miso Ramen (one of the three vegetarian selections). I also requested for them to make it spicy. When I walked back to the counter after hearing my order number shouted out I was surprised to see it sitting on a tray in an authentic ceramic ramen bowl and not a plastic container. The first thing that hit me as I sunk my chopsticks to the bottom of the bowl to fish out some noodles was the amazing aroma which was a real treat on a bitter cold day. The noodles were done perfectly, slightly chewy and delicious. Next, I scooped up some broth in the black plastic ladle that was resting in my bowl and took a sip. I was immediately hooked! I tasted such a great variety of flavors...sesame, miso, cabbage, onions...amazing. The soup also contained a lot of veggies that were still crisp. All this for $13. My friend ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen which was a traditional pork broth with pork belly. He said it was one of the best he's had. It seems we have a long winter ahead and with a 10 minute brisk walk from my office I have a feeling I will be coming back often. I had take out here recently with a few family members that visited. I usually like noodles that are made in house but this one in particular does not give that nice chewy and bouncy texture that you would expect from ramen. This noodle resembles more like somen noodles. The broth was decent, not bad but not worth bragging about either. The pork slices are really good. Finally tried this place today, ordered numbe 1 tonkotsu ramen. Not the best ramen I had, but it's good. I love the noodle, I think they make their own noodle, you could see the machine on the right hand side when you walked in. Ramen came with 3 thick slice of pork belly, and raw spinach, and scallion. This is a great new ramen and rice bowl spot. I've been here a few times already to eat and I think the best part is the speed of the food getting pumped out. This is the fast food equivalent of a ramen place while still maintaining a good consistency. The menu is very limited which is why I think they are able to pump out the food so quickly. Place is brand new so It is extremely clean and tastefully decorated. Staff is very friendly as well. So far I've had the spicy Karakuchi Ramen with shrimp ($11.50) , the chicken teriyaki rice bowl ($9.50) , and the marinated steak rice bowl ($9.50). So far my favorite is the chicken teriyaki rice bowl and I still plan on trying the other ramen bowls. The ramen bowl I had was good but didn't blow me away, and extremely spicy which I liked a lot. Could be a little more flavorful with the broth but overall I'm a fan. Prices are very reasonable and the portions are worth it. Only downside for me is that the ramen bowls come with either pork belly or shrimp. I would love It if they made a chicken option with the ramen bowls and not just the rice bowl. Quick and affordable but mediocre-tasting ramen bowls. The restaurant is actually very spacious (not expected from the storefront!), though I didn't realize until I got there that it's more of a fast casual restaurant where you order up front and seat yourself. The layout in general feels best suited for weekday lunches where nearby office employees can grab a bite, but it's also nice that the restaurant opens until 9:00pm everyday. I decided to try the Black Ramen, which sounded like their most unique menu offering. Unfortunately the smoky flavor of the soup threw me off - I tasted more smokiness than "seafood", and I ended up not drinking most of the broth towards the end. The homemade noodles were also rather bland and while the grilled pork belly LOOKED like it was melt-in-your-mouth tender, it was a letdown to chomp down on something a little tougher. Actually, if you flip the pork belly over, you'll notice that they only char one side of the pork (not both) for presentation purposes. I've heard such rave reviews of the Menya Sandaime location in Fort Lee so I was pretty disappointed with my experience here. Very flavorful, meat was tender, and the egg was perfectly half boiled. Karakuchi - their spicy ramen option. Not too spicy and just enough heat to add good flavor. I added bamboo shoots to mine for extra texture. Just to note, if you order takeout you might need to give the bowl a good stir because the toppings actually sit at the bottom of the bowl. Stopped in here after waiting what seemed like months for this place to open (originally around Fall 2017, but only opened finally in 2018). Big open space with small benches and tables in mostly wood and some fabric, you walk to the back to order and sit down - take heed of your number. Some fake food on the wall albeit not really labeled so not sure if you like the way something looks, you point? Anyway, big menu across the back area and a glimpse into the kitchen. They have a free water station to the right of the counter and pickup area. Ramen: - Miso ramen included a portion of stir-fry vegetables that dwarfed the noodles and soup - for a while there I was eating nothing but those vegetables. The depth of the bowl was pretty good. The miso flavor, however, was far too light. I suspected diluted by all that vegetable on top. - The spicy ramen was interesting, a spicy that didn't turn the soup base red, but was pretty intense none-the-less; go with small (one pepper) if you haven't tried it before. Unfortunately, the size of the food was less than half (minimal vegetables). On both ramens, the pork was too lean and dry, overcooked, didn't fall apart in the mouth (much of it was already shredded), and too heavy on both smoke + burned pieces instead of savory pork. The soy sauce used was too heavy, and the pork reduced what would have been okay ramen to pretty much a bowl of overcooked meat ramen, something you would've expected out of a college dorm kitchen, not a restaurant like Menya. I'm disappointed, and I'll give them another shot later after they work out their opening kinks, but they really need to work on balance between dishes and also work on the balance between events. read more

I went to the Fort Lee location and was happy with my dining experience, so I was excited to hear that this location was opening up in JC! The soft opening finally happened today (with very little marketing notice?). I came directly after work to this very open spaced restaurant - way bigger with more seating than their original location. They're more modern here where the staff takes orders through iPads. And you are given your receipt with your number. When your orders are ready, you pick up your food on a table at the front. Not so much table service in this location, but that's not a pro nor con, as you still have interaction with people. And there's a little "room" you can see into where they make their noodles! I wanted the tsukemen but they only have limited food selections for the soft opening. So I tried the Karakuchi Ramen with mild spice. It comes with spicy tonkotsu broth, in-house made noodles, bean sprouts, scallions, spinach, and pork belly. Broth was decent, not too flavorful but enough. Noodles are a good texture leaning on the softer side. I tend to like softer chasyu but these were good, you can see and feel a bit of the char in the way they were cooked, which was cool. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. They even gave out little mochi filled with ice cream (flavor of our choice between red bean, strawberry, mango, and vanilla) to celebrate their opening. Between this and the other ramen place in Jersey City (Ani Ramen), I like this place better. They'll definitely give Ani a run for their money. This place recently opened up right next to the Cafe Bene so we decide to come by for lunch. I recommend coming early and avoid the rush because the line becomes long and so does the wait! When you first walk in you will realize its not a regular sit down ramen restaurant. You basically walk to the back counter to order your food then find seating after you get your food. They also have a little counter with rayu ( spicy oil) and shichimi togarashi ( Japanese chili powder mix ). After you eat there is a little station where you leave your tray ( which usually a worker will help you). They have a variety of ramen, rice bowls, few appetizers and Vegetarian versions of some of their dishes. If you like Asian soft drinks they have calpico and few other popular drinks. Want something non sugared? Go for the yummy ito en geeen teas. It has no sugar at all and lots of tea flavor. My Co workers got the Tonkatsu Ramen, gyudon and the yaki ramen vegetarian version while I got the Shoyu Ramen. My coworkers with the Gyudon and Tonkatsu got their food fairly quickly and thought it was great. Very flavorful and filling. My shoyu ramen was also delicious as well. It was very flavorful, topped off with half and egg, 2 slightly grilled pork belly, and lots of spinach and bamboo shoots. My Coworker who got the vegetarian version of the seafood sautéed ramen would beg to differ with his experience. His took three times as long to get, and he did not look like he enjoyed it. He threw away half of his food :( however that said, he also is much pickier and doesn't like random things. ( ex : doesn't like chipotle but loves Chick-fil-A, hates Popeyes) This place is good. The black tonkatsu soup here is lighter than the milky broth that I'm used to from Totto or santouka. It's not a bad thing, just a matter of preference and I prefer a heavier broth. We have high hopes for Jersey City Menya Sandaime since it is part the Fort Lee location, known for home made noodles, small well thought out selection, minimalist, clean decor and good service. We ordered a miso and karakuchi ramen. The lady in the front was very helpful and patient. We ordered another item but it was removed due to a food allergy but not a game changer. Order came quickly and money refunded. The karakuchi ramen was well made. Spicy but not overwhelming. Good broth, vegetable and meat combination. The miso ramen was so disappointing. My high hopes crashing with the lack less, watery broth and stiff noodles. It was overpowered by too much vegetables and thick pork slices. I was very disappointed to say the least. I'm sure the 3 stars on this review is temporary. Even with my high hopes lessened, we are going to give Sandaime another chance. The location is new and very close to the PATH. My husband and I were excited to try their food because we knew that it was an actual Japanese brand that originated from Japan, which often means better quality and more authentic flavors... but such was not the case for this place, which was disappointing.
