This was a fun find. We were looking for a nice comfortable spot for lunch and we stumbled into Obica and we were so pleased. The ambiance is great, the indoor dining area with huge windows looking out to their courtyard was great and filled with light. The menu was inviting and we enjoyed our salmon and salad with tuna paired with a lovely Italian rose wine. We definitely wanted to order the full mozzarella tasting but opted for a smoked mozzarella to share and it was excellent with that infusion of smoke. Definitely adding this place to my Florence recommendation list. read more

Dined here two days ago. Atmosphere was lovely even though the restaurant is huge. Felt more like a chain than an authentic Italian restaurant. Service was great. Bread was truly awful and hard. Pesto pasta was not even as good as what I make at home, although I appreciated having pine nuts on top -- not as common anymore. The chicken, vegetables and potatoes were unremarkable. Our Fodor's book recommended, but our concierge at our hotel (one of the top 3 best accommodations in Florence, tried to warn us that they do not recommend. We should have listened. This hip Florence bar/restaurant was a fun night out. A mozzarella bar, the menu centers around bufala in various forms. We got tapas-style plates of prosciuttos and cheeses. We had dishes of bufala stracciatella, ricotta, and a smoked mozzarella, along with salami and a delicious (cooked) prosciutto cotto. I also ordered a pizza with ham, artichokes, and olives. There is a regional difference between the Neapolitan-style pizza served everywhere in Florence, and the ultra-thin pizza that you get in Rome. Here, the pizzas are made with a thicker, crust which, in this case, has risen for three days. It it shaped free-form into an oblong or other shape, and served unsliced. The different meals we ordered were served by people from the kitchen? The first guy put the plate on top of the fork and knife and left while we were making a spot on the table. The other guy left it on the edge of the table away from everyone...we were like huh? When I asked for a menu again to order something else, again left at the end of table and waiter left without saying a word eventhough we had eye contact the whole time. How eggcited am I that they have locations in London!?! We visited their Firenze location recently and dined outside in the courtyard. What a lovely way to enjoy a late afternoon lunch. It was the courtyard that caught our eyes when we walked by the first night we were in Florence. I turned to R and said we must eat here at least once! So, we walked in and made a reservation for the next night. It was honestly, a great decision.I know, I know, you shouldn't choose a restaurant for its looks but it is an important factor. It was a pretty balmy night so, great weather to eat outdoors. They did have outside heaters as well. I felt like we may have came too early but it seemed like as most of its customers came later into the night. It must be a nice place at night to hang out or something. I got the aperol spritz and R got a glass of red wine. We did get one of the their bufalas (mozzarella balls) which was recommended. We also got one of their pizzas, two tapas and one pasta dishes. The food wasn't bad but it doesn't justify its high prices. I think you definitely pay a lot for this atmosphere. Perhaps, come here for a late night wine instead of dinner. I went here for lunch one day and had some of the best mozzarella I have had in Florence. The pizza was not that impressive but was still good. The restaurant is also very big and well designed. Obika Mozzarella Bar & Ristorante was our #1 choice for the first evening of our week-long visit to Florence, starting on March 9th, 2012. We came here as our top choice on the basis of a very reliable recommendation. Obika did not disappoint . . . their incredibly fresh Mozzarella is to die for!! I have never experienced Mozzarella this fresh and amazingly flavorful anywhere in the U.S. I would recommend starting with the "Degustaz 3 Mozzarella" (A Tasting of 3 handmade Mozzarellas di Bufala Campana DOP: Paestum, Pontina and Smoked). Obika's Mozzarellas come exclusively from selected producers in the Paestum and the Agro Pontino areas of Italy. They are all provided with a DOP certification (Protected Origin Denomination). The handmade mozzarellas are processed using milk from the water buffalo owned by the dairy farmers, who use their hands for the "mozzatura" process ("mozzare" means to lop off) to form the individual mozzarellas. The contrasting 3 flavors are absolutely amazing. We accompanied this with a wonderful Prosecco. Outstanding together with the Mozzarella !! We would also highly recommend each of our main courses, which included a Ravioli Artigiananli, a Vegetarian Pizza "Biologico" (I.e., Organic), and a choice of the Insalata Mista (as a main if you are eating light). We enjoyed Acqua Naturale with our meals, and Cappucino to conclude the evening. The ambiance is very modern, stylish, even trendy . . . and highly stylish Italian to it's core with the attractive presence of the Mozzarella Bar inside one of the main dining areas. A dramatic entry way, with VERY high ceilings which add to the drama and romance of the environment. Seating includes standard tables, or you may choose to sit on a tall bar stool at their community seating areas adjacent to the Mozzarella Bar. There is also a secondary somewhat more subdued dining area, that was equally stylish. Service was very attentive, and the overall dining experience is worthy of a solid 5 star rating!!! This a very elegant place: the surroundings are absolutely beautiful. But we do not live on beauty, do we? And that is why Obika is great: they also serve great food. Forget that it is a worldwide restaurants chain - sometimes those people randomly do things right. We had two different types of mozzarella with some prochiutto crudo and some spicy salami. Both the cheese and the ham were delicious. And all this was accompanied by a very good bread - especially I must confess the one that was soaked in olive oil - very good. At this point, I was happy about the place but still thinking "yes it is a good mozzarella bar chain but would they know how to cook?". And then, we had Schiaffoni di Gragnano 'Pasta Gentile' with Mozzarella di Bufala and tomato Sauce and it was really good. So I had to take my hat off to this place: you can both have a good glass of spritz and taste good mozzarella AND have a real dinner. I hate giving this restaurant a two star review because it certainly deserves more. But, when a waiter spills wine on a customer (accidents happen) - ruining my favorite polo shirt, (cool polo see attached photo), I expect management to offer the bill to be on the house and if I was in the US pay for the damage. Only after I asked was I refunded the price of the tshirt but I still had to take care of the bill. You don't ruin someone's evening and expect them to pay for it. Set right in the high end area of downtown Florence, flanked by Chanel, Gucci, Dolce, etc., enter an archway into a beautiful courtyard with massively oversized umbrellas, swank seating and fresh air within towering walls. If you choose not to sit inside, you can enter through a wall of glass to a modern, posh interior filled with tables, a nice bar and open area kitchen. Travel down a hallway to additional dining rooms and a basement cellar, where you will also find the nice restrooms. Food: the specialty is mozzarella cheese. They have 4 main types for you to choose from. I chose a tray with 2 types (1 a smoked large ball and the other a very soft, almost liquid filled bowl). Some spinach and olives were also included with a basket of bread for 13 euros. You can also choose additional mozzarella types or side dishes for additional cost. I then had a pizza with truffle-flavored salami and ricotta cheese which was quite good and can definitely be shared. 11 euros. They had at least a dozen pizzas to choose from, some pasta dishes and numerous salads. Food was good. Don't miss trying the balsamic vinegar on the table - really good! Drink: of course full wine bar. Bottled natural and sparkling water in fancy glass bottles. 2 euros. Service charge of 2 euros per person. Staff were friendly and spoke some English. We arrived at 12:10 and the place was a wee delayed opening. Worth the extra wait. The seating is primarily in this beautiful open courtyard. Fresh air and openness. There's also an indoor seating area. They offer a large variety of fresh mozzarellas. Have some. You can very clearly taste the freshness. Try a variety of things. The pesto lasagna is okay. This place is to be avoided at all costs. Apparently it is run by the keystone cops and they can get nothing right. Where to begin? After getting attitude about being seated even though it was half empty and we had a reservation we ended up waiting 20 minutes for our server to arrive. No greeting was offered, simply a perfunctory "are you ready to order?" We then spent 10 minutes trying to coax information out of him about dishes which needed explanation. Being a new-fangled type of restaurant much of their dishes were not easily decipherable. He was on little help - especially as it turned out a large number of their dishes were "out." Don't even ask about our wine conversation - let's just say it was not satisfactory and the person he sent over to help was not much better. Good news though, our food arrived 30 minutes later (!!!!!) and was cold as it had clearly been sitting to be picked up for quite a while. No point in sending it back, as we couldn't bear sitting there any longer. Everyone in this place was the same, and was running around frantically. If I didn't know better I'd say they were understaffed, but it was Sunday night and slow. Plus, they had plenty of people on the floor. Clearly this was a management decision. Not a bad start to our Florentine vacation! Decide to go here for a quick bite as it was a top recommend in our Lonely Planet Italy guide plus it was just 5 mins away from our rental place. The great yelp reviews were also a deciding factor. We arrived right at 6:30 as they were opening and got x3 cocktails and x3 small plates and it cost us €53 so not bad price wise either. I would recommend the Sicilian Ice tea cocktail as it was sweet and refreshing with the strawberries being a lovely touch. The Apple Sunrise cocktail was too bitter and sour for my taste. For the small plates, the Gran Tagliere was definitely the top palate pleaser - the Soppresetta was just divine as was the cheese and the small pillows of bread. In the Pizetta, we found the sausage and baby chard to be the firm favorite with the anchovies just too overwhelmingly fishy. The Fritti di Verdure was also really good with the aubergine the star standout. After this quick bite we left to go on our Medieval Florence tour, but then went back to the restaurant to get a takeaway pizza. We got the charcoal roasted ham one and it didn't really taste too charcoal-y at all! Was great tasting but not the flavor I was expecting. The olives were super salty - not sure would get them again, but the cheese and artichokes plus the bread crust were outstanding. Btw, the setup of this place is really really great and everyone spoke fantastic English and the service we got was quick and very friendly. They do have free wifi but none of the three of us were successful in joining it, so that wasn't great. read more

Our favorite in town. Interior is really cool, especially the hallway to the toilets in the back of the restaurant is Very impressing. The walls are decorated with mirrors and shelfs that hold hundreds of wine bottles. Service is extraordinarily friendly. Also when compared to other restaurants in Italy very caring! Other than that its just a nice location in general, the wine card offers a wide selection and the food - esp their mozzarella, but also the salads- are to die for. Prices are ok, you get the quality you pay for, so I'd consider them appropriate. Will definately come back when in Florence again! read more

Last week me and a small group of girls went to Obika for mozzarella tasting. At the front of the restaurant there is a partial enclosed terrace with outdoor seating, tables, heating lamps, and modern decorations. This area would be wonderful to sit at in the spring, but because it has a roof and heaters it makes the area usable no matter what the season. The terrace is right up against the front of the restaurant which is all large, floor to ceiling windows. The main room of the restaurant is visible through these windows and contains a large bar with bar stools and table seating. Off to the left of the entrance there is another room strictly for table seating and further down the hall way to the left is where we had our tasting. As they walked us back through the hall way we passed a several bookcases being used as wine holders, which jetted out from the walls perpendicularly. The walls in this section had been covered with mirrors which gives the hall way a matrix-like vibe. At the end of the hall way, we entered a room in which we were given a presentation on how mozzarella is made, how to tell if its been made by hand or machine, and how to tell if its fresh. The presenter seemed very knowledgeable and was entertaining. They served us several types of their handmade, fresh mozzarella including smoked mozzarella (which I didn't even know existed before this trip!) Everything from the cheese down to the basil they decorated the plates with was top notch. Although I went for a tasting, there are several other reasons to come to Obika. On top of their regular lunch and dinner menu, they serve a sunday brunch, which I am sure is finger-lickin' good. Also, in the evenings the bar in the main room turns into an aperitivo, and they serve their cheeses and other goodies along with a purchase of a drink. I definitely recommend this place! I didn't realize this place is a chain. I bookmarked it because they serve meats and cheeses and is a quick 3 minute walk from our hotel. We ended up here our first night in Florence and were not disappointed. I would have been happy to come here again, but my husband wanted to like try new things. Whatever. We showed up without a reservation fairly earlyish for dinner(around 7) and were seated easily in their outdoor courtyard. By the look we were given though, I would suggest getting a reservation. The place was packed by the time we left. This is a mozzarella bar thoguh. I mean, what else do you need to know? The mozzarella was amazing. We got meats to go with it, but really all you need is the cheese. We both had some delicious pasta dishes as well. Somehow I had never had Cacio e Pepe before, but it was delicious and i would definitely recommend it. That is if you're not full from all the mozzarella. read more

We came here for lunch a few days ago. As suggested from others, we started with the 2 mozzarella tasting. Fantastico! We split the insalata mista and their verdure grigliate pizza. It was so amazing!! Days later and I can still taste it! I also want to recreate it at home. That's how you know your pizza is a winner! We were lucky enough to come before the influx of rude tourists and got a great corner table in their courtyard. Some of the other "snobby" patrons were put off by the staff, especially those who couldn't get a table. We found the staff to be very pleasant. People must remember that we are in Italy and not everyone speaks English. A little Italian goes a long way! The waiter forgot to bring out my husband's beer upon our first course. We casually reminded the waiter when he came around. He apologized and brought the beer with the pizza. It was no problem to us, as we knew they were busy. I have been here several times, mainly for the aperitivo, but also once for dinner in the more casual area and another in the more formal area (walk in and to the left). The food and wine is always top notch, especially anything including their famous mozzarella. I prefer to sit outside because it is much quieter than inside and much more intimate in this lovely terrace area. The service and ambiance here is sublime, conveniently located near Piazza della Repubblica My only gripe is that they changed the aperitivo from a buffet to the server bringing you a small selection of bites to nibble on with your exceptionally well made cocktail. I guess I'd just rather choose exactly what I like rather than given a decided aperitivo selection, but I can't really complain because like any aperitivo in Italia, this food comes free with the drink. read more

If I were to rate this place just on the mozzarella, I would give it 5 stars. No question. However, coupled with the pizza, the rating goes down to three. My girlfriend ordered the mushroom cream truffle pizza. Think....large crispy oval completely covered in the 'poo' emoticon (if you have the iphone). Yeaaah, really not so good. The others ordered the artichoke pizza (fair enough) and the arugula pizza (decent). But to end on a good note, the wine selection was plentiful and varied. They had a good price range for all budgets. They also offered mini desserts for when you just need a bite of something sweet at the end of a meal. I liked it.
