I have to say the steak was delicious! People should appreciate service in USA. The service here was terrible, we have a larger group, but both servers aren't able to manage their stress specially when we have to communicate in English. I can't believe she actually said to us " wait, I only have to hands!" ( but in the rude manor, so does her colleague, another guy was taking care of us at the same time) not even that, you can tell they were speaking Italian complaining about us after. I understand it's busy, but at least to be kind is more important. We traveling around South Italy for 12 days and this has been the worst service ever. We were asking if they have any fruits instead of the pasta because the pasta was too salty and when they remake it, it never came! This restaurant was around the corner from our hotel and we showed up at closing just as we arrived to Florence, and wow are we sure glad we stumbled upon it. My mom said it was the best carbonara she had all trip. All of the pastas and appies we got were amazing!! I got the truffle ravioli and the caprese salad. Delicious. read more

The food was great, however on the door it advertised a menu of the day for 15 euro, when I inquired with the waitress, she said " I don't know what you are taking about in rushed English then walked away" . She brought me a menu in English and said this is what we have. It was still good, cold chicken salad and my husband had ravioli which was excellent, however knowing we could have had primi included for a lower price, it tainted our experience. So we went 3 TIMES over our short stay, LOL, but the food and value was way worth it. Everything we (6) had was great, and the veal chop was a deal! Waiter found us a great reasonable chianti we'd pay way more at most places for the vintage. While all the pastas were great, it was nice finding a meat and roasted potatoes for a change. They did have so much traffic, at times we had to flag our guy down. But none of the staff got grumpy about it, they were just trying to keep up. I could easily go once a week here if it was at home! Service was so kind here, very patient and friendly service on my first day of Florence. Everything I ordered was delicious the crostini mix of liver pate, mushrooms and bruschetta (sorry not sure what menu calls it) was great and I also ordered a pasta with wild boar and it was lovely, too involved to photograph. I got a salad after and it was great finish to a nice dinner. I wish I remembered my waiter's name. He was very friendly and efficient and helped make it a good experience. This was a rough night for dinner, apparently it was one of the hottest days on record in Florence and the A/C in this joint is not up to the task. We were in a cramped room with no air circulation. Needless to say sweat was pouring off everyone. It was miserable. I tried to make the best of it and I really did enjoy the food. The service was good and they were sweating too. The gluten free options were ok, we were eating with a group so they didn't get very creative with the options. I'd like to come back and just order off the menu if I'm ever in Florence again. read more

Assorted meat - includes amazing, delicious potatoes!! The pieces of meat that came with it were: Turkey, veal, chicken, roast beef, and rib. It was small amounts of meat, but after eating everything we were full! Mushroom ravioli - my husband loved it. I thought it was food. They had adequate amounts of porcini mushrooms. White beans- very simply prepared. It was fresh and clean tasting. White beans drizzled with oil and black pepper. The house wine was good, but tasted like it was carbonated. Overall, it was good here. Service was great and attentive. But be aware most servers dont tell you in advance that they charge extra for water, etc. And there is a small table fee of 4 euros which is way less than what we pay for tax and tip. read more

Amazing food. We got here pretty late on a Friday night around 9-930, but were lucky to be seated. Full of locals. We ordered the assorted antipasti, the liver pate was so good and all the other tomato on bread dishes were so fresh and good. We also ordered the truffle ravioli, and the set with the 1 kilogram Chianina steak which were shared by 4 of us and came with dessert. We also had Chianti Supreme and the Aziano red wine suggested by the Guiseppe the waiter which was right on point. The price is reasonable by Ametrican standards, our meal would've cost 500 dollars easy in California with a couple bottles of wine, not 150 euros in this case. Overall, an amazing welcome food experience for us in Italy. I miss this place and their food already. read more

The food at La Spada is good but not mindblowing. It looks small from the outside but is actually really large and stretches deep into the restaurant. Because there are so many tables you don't need to make a reservation. The atmosphere is casual. There's a mix of locals and tourists dining here. Salmon caviar pasta- I heard this was the dish to get but it was bit too creamy and heavy for my liking. Roast beef- I was immediately disappointed when I took the first bite. I think I was initially thrown off by how cold the meat was. The flavor was just ok good. I really regret not getting the meat that they were roasting when you walk into the restaurant. Was looking for another restaurant but needed here. The waiter doesn't speak much English. there's no WiFi, and apparently a black spot for Vodafone service. Ordered Tortellini which was all right. When I made the order, I also asked for mixed vegetables as a side dish. But after I finished the tortellini there's still no sight of the side dish. It seems that the waiter had forgot us completely. I asked for him several times. It looked to me that he forgot to place the order for the side dish. At that point I didn't want the side dish at all and wanted to cancel it. But the waiter said that I couldn't cancel because they had already started to cook it. Waited for another 15-20min then finally the side dish came. Overall it was not a very good experience. Excellent 'bistecca fiorentina' ! We had a fiorentina steak for 2: 1kg of T-bone steak cooked to perfection. And it came inside a menu with starter (mixed ham, cheese and crostini) and dessert at 30 euros per person. A good deal for a good Fiorentina. We noticed that many customers were italian tourist shops employees (some wore Louis Vuitton badges). After eating the steak, we were stuffed, so we asked to swap our dessert for a coffe. I loveeed La Spada. We ate here almost every night during my study abroad trip and they undoubtably have some of the best food in Florence. They served us a different dish every time and each one was just as good as the last. The owners/staff are all so nice and welcoming and it would be a shame if tourists didn't eat here at least once. I'd actually rate this 2 1/2 stars. The restaurant was near our apt. in Florence. We were originally going to get take out, but when we got there, the food looked like it had been sitting for a long time so we opted to eat inside. It took about 10 minutes for us to be seated, then another 10-15 for our order to be taken. I got a ravioli dish with mushrooms and ham. My husband ordered the filet. They did not ask how he wanted it cooked. My husband asked the waiter, and he said they normally serve rare. They did cook it medium rare as requested. The bread was very dry and flavorless (no charge for the bread). My ravioli was also bland. I added salt (which I haven't done in 4 days of being in Italy), and the dish was better. I didn't taste any cheese, it was more like eating a potato filling. My husbands filet was also pretty bland, though the potatoes that came with were very good. Service was slow, and the waiters seemed a little confused and banged things around a lot. Overall, I would not return, nor recommend. read more

A good and casual trattoria that we used to come to quite regularly. They used to run a special for those of us who knew Padre Bruno. This a casual place, simple and without frills. But they offer traditional food, and there are all types of meat on the spit...rabbit, veal, turkey, beef...and I dont remember another place in Florence that offered all of these. La Spada means the sword, and this is what they do best. I often had the 1/4 chicken, with delicious roasted potatoes...but their pastas were good also. The ambiance itself is really nice and has been recently renovated. I have often been here to pick up food for lunch as it is very popular in the area with workers. I went this past Monday with someone who had been going there for a number of years.. I mean literally everyday for dinner getting more or less the same meal. I was really excited to try this place at night as well! We were shown to a table and sat down and proceeded to order, no problems. They asked us if we wanted a small or big bottle of wine which was a bit strange, I don't think I have ever seen this small of a bottle even available but awesome, ok. We order our food and two of our plates were ready while the third was not, The waitress said just a few minutes, but that turned into at least 15 minutes. She finally admitted that the kitchen forgot about it without even apologizing even though we had already eaten our plates which I did feel bad about. nn si fa cosi! Everything was fine for the second course but when we tried to order another bottle of wine, they forgot about that as well, and naturally no apology when we had to insist they bring it out, which I thought was super strange. I mean really, you forget to bring it, ok thats fine but at least pretend that you care? Then we were ordering dessert she just asks if we want tiramisu. This was annoying because in the type of menu I got, I could order any dessert that was available but she didn't seem like she wanted to tell me about any other. Thankfully I insisted on her telling me the other options and not just assume that I was a tourist (which shouldn't happen anyway) and wouldn't want anything else, especially since the chestnut budino I did have was absolutely delicious! Conclusion, good food, I enjoyed my trio of pasta, arrosto, patate and dessert but the service that night was terrible and unapologetic which honestly I would have expected much more considering that we were with someone who dines there every single evening. read more

Another old college haunt of my girlfriend, we decided to hit Spada on our last night in Florence. It's not far from where we were staying and we wanted something a little less fancy, but still good quality. Spada fits the bill perfectly. We split a delicious tortellini ala medici, which has a creamy and hearty sauce with peas and bacon. My girlfriend ordered the scamorza--a delicious, smoked cheese topped with prosciutto and baked. It was a gooey and decadent concoction--but a must for cheese lovers. We split a plate of grilled sausage that came with some tasty white beans. As a side we had the rosemary-seasoned potatoes, patate alla ghiotta, which were good but not as crispy as we would have liked. We also shared the sformato di verdure, which was like a slice of veggie quiche--it was good but didn't wow us. The service was fast and friendly. The server liked that we spoke Italian and he helped us pick out an awesome bottle of red wine (for only 15 euro). The meal was quite large, very good and pretty reasonably priced at about only 60 euros. read more

BISTECCA ALLA FIORENTINA. That's all I'll say. This is one of Florence's most famous dish and La Spada does an amazing job serving it. We started with a bottle of 1L red house wine and was served the typical basket of bread. The menu also has English, which was very helpful. One of us decided to get the set meal that came with the Florentine steak, as well as a huge appetizer meat platter and a dessert. The rest of us shared one 500g bistecca along with a dish of mixed vegetables. The steak was somewhat more raw than we had hoped, but it was still delicious and we mowed it all down by the end of the night. But to make up for the rawness, the set steak came with the most perfect potatoes. We left the restaurant with full and satisfied stomachs! read more

Was recommended this place by our Airbnb host as well as couple other friends. And it sure didn't disappoint. Yes it's a touristy place - but has plenty of locals hanging out too. We went there on a Thursday night with 7 people at around 10 pm - and they found us our own little private room. The wait staff was super friendly. none of us spoke Italian - but they were really patient and tried the best they could to communicate in English. The food was terrific. Mixed crostini plates were great as were the four pasta dishes - carbonara spaghetti, gnocchi, etc. the gnocchi was ridiculously amazing. Go for the house wine - it is really good and not expensive. Our planned dinner place couldn't take us, so we wandered and found this place. Right away, the restaurant was very hot because of the fire oven used to cook meats, but that didn't take anything away from the great food. I had the spaghetti carbonara, and it was perfectly balanced--not too much cream and not too much butter. The portion was also great at a reasonable price. My friend got a huge steak that was delicious. Only knocks I have on this place are the temperature, and the fact that our waitress forgot to bring us water.
