OCC is a step above everywhere else! This is my 3rd surgery with OCC over the last 14 years. I had a lap band 12/29/2010, with no problems and everything was awesome. I went back a few time for adjustments over the years. I lost about 70 lbs and would vary over the years +/- 20lbs. On April 2, 2022 something happened and the band slipped, nothing would pass, not even my own saliva. I called OCC and was in surgery the very next day. They removed the band and another awesome experience. However being free over the last 2 years I had gained back 74lbs and it was time to call OCC to make the appointment for the Sleeve. I contacted OCC on 3/22/24 and they scheduled me for 4/23/24. I started my extended pre-op diet that day on 3/22/24 I was 297.3lbs. The diet wasn't to bad but by the time I was to start the liquid diet, I did an extra day as I was pretty tired of so much vegetables. LOL. My brother was my companion down but I there was really no need (more him than me). I arrived to OCC on Monday for labs, measurements and consult, I met my 3 OCC surgery buddy's, 2 from California and 1 from Maryland. We all really connected and have our own OCC surgery Buddy group and chat everyday. I really think we all helped each other get through it. The experience was exceptional as always, one of our group has some pain and nausea but we all walked with her and tried to support her. She is doing great now. My surgical weight was 264.85, I had lost 32.48 lbs on the pre-op diet...WOW I am so excited that I have made this LIFE CHANGE, now I can look forward to my body repairing it self, I won't be pre-diabetic soon, my BP is already way better, will probably be able to come off the BP meds. I now have a better chance of growing old and someday being there for my unborn grand baby's. With the sleeve I will still be able to eat everything I like to eat just with and extreme portion control. I will have 1 good piece of pizza vs the whole pizza, a nice big pastrami sandwich will be 4 meals instead of 1. The saving alone will probably pay for the surgery in less than a year! I had surgery at OCC in January of 2022. The care I received was great, everyone came in to introduce themselves (except Dr. Ortiz) but he was the lead surgeon on my procedure according to my paperwork. My only "complaint" is that I received little to no follow-up support. My pre and early post-op direction was very well laid out but once I was on "real food" any time I asked for help I would get a canned response and I could tell they didn't even check my chart because they kept recommending things like greek yogurt and cottage cheese when its clear on my records I have an allergy to all dairy. I was feeling really low and unsupported until I found an online group that is freaking amazing. The Sleeved Dietician has a support group called The T.R.I.B.E that is beyond supportive. Everyone there (all women) have had bariatric surgery in one form or another and there are patients there that are pre-op to many years post-op so if you are going through something, I can guarantee someone there has gone through it as well. They have many different monthly (or weekly) groups on many different topics that you can join and either just lurk or join in, guest speakers about all of the things that no one tells you about with bariatric surgery...because frankly it's a huge mental game, big time and I never got any support from OCC on the whole mental side of bariatric surgery. One of the first things I learned from the group is how to determine your capacity...I would think this would be a really important piece of information to have when navigating your new stomach, but no one at OCC ever mentioned anything like that. It totally changed my life and taught me how to create a balance bariatric plate. Bariatric surgery is a tool but you need to fix your brain to use it to its full potential. Your whole relationship with food needs to change if you want it to last. You can't just eat less of the same crap that got you to surgery in the first place. First and foremost I want to start this review by saying 1. I have zero regrets about OCC, 2. OCC is the best, hands down. Clean and beautiful place. They take care of everything. 3. Dr. Ortiz, Dr. Martinez, and Lucia - all incredible, kind people. That being said I want to share my story so people can make an informed decision. No intent to dissuade, and understand my results are very uncommon and unique to my own health issues. The process from start to finish was clear, supportive, and thorough. The support groups on Facebook are incredible and an amazing resource. Crossing the border was very easy (they arranged for pick up at the SD airport) and transportation while in Mexico was already arranged. I never felt unsafe. Ever. You start by getting your blood work and EKG done, then meeting with Lucia, a before you head to the hotel (also clean and comfortable). The next day I believe we met up at the hotel lobby around 6 or 6:30? A driver was ready to take us to OCC. (the driver, btw, also very kind and helpful, bring tip money for him imo). We got checked in. It was a few hours until surgery. Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez came by and really helped put my nerves at ease. I forgot to mention I traveled alone with no companion (it was completely fine). Anyway, the staff their is continually checking on you preop as well as post op. I remember getting wheeled into surgery. They put in the anesthetic and I was out cold. Felt like a nice nap. I woke up groggy, but to my surprise, no pain. There could be no correlation in these observations but I did feel like the smaller the patient, the more apt they were for nausea. I thankfully avoided that feeling most of the time (it did hit me randomly later in recovery but not that day). They encourage you to walk as soon as you can, and so I did. I felt amazing (prob some of the pain meds), but I was so excited and hopeful for this new life I was going to have. The aftercare for the night we stayed in the hospital was amazing. The nurses were so kind and helpful. We went back to the hotel the next morning. I made friends with someone who had surgery the following day. We went to a restaurant that makes amazing beef broth. Oh that's something I left out. The Marriott will provide you chicken and beef broth, and popsicles which are just about the best fricken thing u will eat the whole time you're there. I'm not much for sweets, but man those popsicles hit the spot. Also the beef broth is better than the chicken. You have that whole day to recover, I spent time walking around, even going to the gym for very slow treadmill walking. I felt great. The next day we went for swallow test, and then went home. About me: I have PCOS. The stubborn kind. More stubborn than most kind. And I knew that going into surgery, but was hopeful surgery would change that. It does for many people with PCOS. You can connect with them in the support group. Dr. Ortiz will even tell you about sleeve babies because surgery does help to get your cycle back in order. That being said, I did not lose the kind of weight my sleeve sisters, or myself had hoped for. And while I tried to anticipate, and mentally prepare for that happening, it's was much harder than I anticipated. It is 100% your responsibility your to follow through with your diet plan post op, folllow up with Lucia and the doctors if you stall, which I did. I resumed a very active lifestyle. But the weight didn't move. I had blood work done with my doctor, all things positive,- lower A1C, etc, but the weight remained. HW (Highest Weight): 296 SW (Surgery Weight): 274 CW (Current Weight): 260 GW (Goal Weight) 175 I had surgery in September 2022, and it's been 9 months. The friend I made, who also suffered from PCOS, similarly built, is down 150 lbs by comparison. I'd cut off my arm to know what that feels like. And maybe someday I'll get there but the bulk of my weight should have come off already. So I've been heavily involved in therapy. Hoping to fix what weight loss can't. Again, no regrets. I do love now eating less. Feeling full sooner. And I'd recommend OCC a million times over. And to mirror what I think everyone says, I wish I had done it sooner. I started doing my research on the best doctors for weight loss surgery the beginning of 2021. I live in the US, but my research said Dr Ortiz & Dr. Martinez with OCC in Tijuana are the best. From the moment I contacted the clinic I was very well taken care of and my questions were always replied to and answered quickly. My sleeve surgery was 5/24/21. I travelled alone and was never afraid. Everyone was so kind and helpful; even at the Marriott. The first day after surgery was the hardest but even so it's been my easiest surgical recovery. After that first day i never felt like I had even had surgery. My starting weight was 225, my surgery weight was 196 (follow the pre-op diet they give you!), my current weight is 157. Two and a half years ago (July 2017), my then 21 year old daughter and I (53 at the time) embarked on a journey to get healthy! I researched the heck out of clinics in Mexico and was actually referred to OCC by a general practitioner that I had met with. They gave me 3 referrals and after much research I decided on OCC. I found them to be slightly higher in price than other clinics in Tijuana but the difference was minimal for the peace of mind. My daughter had trouble keeping hydrated and has had some issues regarding that (nothing to do with OCC). I have been off of my blood pressure medications for 2 years now and have felt so much healthier with the 100 pound weight loss. My daughter lost 115 pounds. What an amazing , hassle free experience this was. This surgery is life altering in a positive way. I was a 210lb diabetic on 5 medications with my numbers going through the roof. I have been contacting WLS surgeons in Mexico. And even though all of them have told me the same (leaving out they hire brokers to do their bidding) the OCC doesn't. They have coordinators instead. You find that Dr. Ortiz has his very extensive list of credentials and work experiences on his website. So I did my homework. I've checked out the numerous AMERICAN websites which he affiliated with and approved by. He's not falsifying anything! Period. Now, I haven't had my Bariatric surgery yet. But he himself had taken the time to return my email to him after I had already spoken to one of his company employed coordinators, Efren. Everyone else in Mexico had told me I couldn't use the Transdermal pain patch (Not Fentanyl) which I use for chronic pain relief. I would have to literally suffer for upto 2 weeks before surgery, even though my pain management doctor said it could do so safely. Dr. Ortiz reaches out to me immediately and put my fears to rest. I can use it for pain relief during my surgery in combination with the medication they will give me for any nausea. Asked if I would like for him to contact via phone. For a doctor that you haven't even met yet to do that when he's extremely busy, that is invaluable!! So I will be speaking with him today. OCC is a well oiled machine. They have an expert for every part of your journey. They offer immediate support before, during, and after your procedure. I chose OCC over other centers because well if their history, clear expectations, and long term support. Most centers only offer support on day of surgery, leaving you with questions...fears...doubts. I felt none of those things with OCC. I always felt confident and prepared. The only regret about this surgery is that I didn't get it done sooner. From the minute I signed up the team at OCC were helpful and responsive. They helped me with the pre op diet, anytime I got nervous they were there to talk to, and the trip to Mexico for the surgery was amazing. They met us in San Diego, drove us to the hotel, and the morning of surgery was a breeze. They have things down so well that you barely have time to get nervous because they are so positive from the minute you step foot in the facility. I had some health issues following surgery (Not related to the surgery, but more how my body reacted) doctors in California spent months trying to figure out what was going on, OCC asked if I could come back down so they could check on me, and within hours I was feeling better! They were so nice and helpful even when they didn't have to be. I am now 8 months out of surgery and am down 120 pounds from my highest weight, my brother is down 200, and my mom is getting the surgery in July. Fantastic center. Loved my treatment both before, during, and after surgery. Amazing sleeve siblings the day of my surgery: business managers, doctors, and nurses. There was a doctor on staff 24 hours a day. The follow up after the surgery has been second to none. I've had such good results I would recommend this center even if a person had insurance covering their surgery in the states. Experience matters and with OCC you get not only experience but the excellent track record and a Certified Center of Excellence. I had the sleeve 4-1/2 years ago at OCC! I have zero regrets. After a lifetime of losing 50 to 80 lbs and gaining back the weight plus more each time, I was ready to lose the weight and keep it off. I researched the sleeve procedure and stumbled upon OCC in Tijuana. After researching the facility, and both Drs I settled on Dr Ortiz and Dr Medina. All of their accreditation's and awards are verifiable and their facility and care is much better than what I have had in the States, plus no pain! That was my biggest surprise! They also have a FB group that you can join because they are confident in what they do. Story after story.....life changing. It is not a magic pill that never makes you want to eat again (except for the first 6 months) but it is a great tool that has allowed me to keep the weight off, regain my life and keep myself healthy. I had gastric sleeve surgery here on 8/4/2016. I highly recommend this place if you need WLS. We hear all of the horror stories about how bad it is in Tijuana. Most of my friends and family were cringing that I was going to go to another country to have surgery. However, I had a really great experience. I have worked in healthcare here in the US for over 20 years, and I went with a friend of mine who also works in healthcare. You fly to the San Diego. A driver from the clinic picks you up. He was right on time and very friendly. He takes you across the border and helps you through customs and then to the clinic or hotel (depending on what time you arrive). We went straight to the clinic since we arrive in the morning the day before surgery. We completed all of our pre-op labs and such and then they drove us to the hotel (Marriott Tijuana). The hotel staff was great, and we were able to walk to the Walmart that was just a few blocks away. The next morning we went back to the clinic for our surgery. Everything went very well, and I was waking the halls very soon after the procedure. You stay overnight here, and then they send you back to the hotel the next morning. Two days later you go back for the leak test, and then you go home the next day. This has been the easiest recovery I have had. I am now a month out and feel great. I have had no complications. My friend had a minor issue with one of her incisions getting a little infected. I was not heavy enough to have insurance cover my surgery and I have no health issues. I would have had to pay out of pocket which averages about $16k. My friend's insurance would cover it, but she have had to go through the 6 months tests and hoops and such. Her out of pocket was just under what we paid in Mexico. If I had to do it over again, I would choose this place again. read more

I had gastric sleeve surgery at OCC on 09/29/2016. My experience at OCC was wonderful. I stayed at the beautiful Marriott, where the staff looked after my every need. While at OCC, the doctors and nursing staff were attentive, the surgery center was clean and simple, and the doctors really know what they are doing. I had no complications and feel great! I've lost over 20 pounds in the month since surgery and the staff continue to be there for me.
