This park is quite different from any other dog park I've been to. It's quite large and on the perimeter it is reminiscent of a hiking trail. Though it is completely fenced, if you have a smaller dog, you will probably definitely want to follow them around the first time you go. It's that big. The first time I took my puppy, someone actually offered to help me go find him because he had disappeared. Luckily, just at that moment, he came running out of the woods. There's also a small pool that you can fill up with water for your dogs and several water bowls. The park is a bit hidden, so you really have to look for the chain-link fence. There is no one area for small or big dogs. And there are several areas for seating. For me, this would not be an every day park, but maybe once a month for the new smells and new dogs. read more

This is my favorite place in all of Atlanta to bring my two dogs (and we've taken them almost everywhere)! Oakhurst is dog heaven - I'm so thankful that this beautiful plot of land has been preserved and set aside for dogs to enjoy. There is just one area (no separation between small and large), but the park is big and includes pools, an open space, agility equipment, and fenced in shaded trails. The trails make this spot so unique and so nice to go on an off leash "hike" - it's a peaceful and shady spot that stays cool even on the hottest days. The park is very well maintained by volunteers, and we've found dog owners to be very friendly and attentive on each of our visits. read more

First time at a dog park, EVER...so my review has some very high expectations. So I went during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was hoping for this place to remove all my in cabin stress. Parking: on street parking is almost non-existent. There is a church across the street, they have signage to deter parking. Clearly, it's been an issue. But rest assured there is a recreation building next door and an open field that has some parking. It's fair to say most of the people who attend the park, live close and simply walk. It's a gated area. Once you enter there is sanitizer and most people unleash their dogs and they run free. There are water bottles, toys and obstacles. Terrain is mixed. Very natural, hidden and open spaces. Now, animals are animals, but the human owners need some work. There isn't an area for small vs larger animals. And owners don't really address rambunctious animals towards other animals. So if your a new and timid mommy I would suggest go at your own risk. It's kinda like this, practice what you would do w your toddler if another child is rude to your child. It can be a real test to your spirit. read more

This was my dogs first dog park visit - but I asked around and work on the park is that this is where it's at I was worried about smelling urine and dog waste, but the main running area is covered in bark and smells like fresh mulch. At the entry, there is a receptacle for dog waste and it dispenses the free small black bags. There is a hose at the entry to wash off the dog, they all tend to get overstimulated in the park and drool is prevalent. There is a small plastic kiddie pool that you can fill to keep your dog cool. Lots of big dogs here, some got aggressive, but overall it's a very playful park for all sizes. There are several benches and picnic tables so there is space to sit alone but there are friendly people all around to chat with also. read more

Absolutely love this dog park! It's huge. They have a wooden area with a trail for a more shaded walk. A dog pool (plastic one) that's shaped like a dog bone. A hose to wash your dog(s) off. The park is clean and well maintained. The folks we met there were friendly and encouraging as my dog had never been to a dog park and is a rescue dog so he was really nervous. Best dog park around for sure. It literally is a huge gated area with hills and "street names" and open play areas. There are benches and some tables to sit at too. People who bring his/her dog are also so kind to other pups who run up to them or jump on their laps (like my pup). The area is covered in mulch so even after a rainy day, it's still not horrible. They have water available for the dogs too and some toys. Parking on Sundays is tricky because the parking on all other days is in the church parking lot across the street. We just avoid going on Sundays. read more

Oakhurst Dog Park is a great place to go with a well-socialized dog. My husband and I have taken our GSD there nearly every day, at least an hour or two (we don't have a yard) for about six weeks. The space is really nice. My family likes the little trails and the frisbee/ball fetch area is roomy. There are lots of benches around the park. Also, someone (the city?) stocks the park with tennis balls sponsored by Trifexis. Plenty of clean water, although it gets turned off for the winter. People do bring big gallons of water with them. The parking is good during the week because the church across the street allows parking for dog park goers on weekdays. There's a big pile of mulch/wood chips beside the entrance right now, which dogs love to climb "King of the Hill" style. The small fenced area in the middle of the park is not actually for small dogs, but is there because when it rains water pools badly in that section. I guess City of Decatur decided it would be easier to just fence it off. Like most places the crowd changes by the hour. Sometimes you get a lot of chatty, friendly owners, sometimes you get aloof people, sometimes you get new dogs & owners, etc. Sometimes no one is there at all (when it's really cold or raining). I have seen some squabbles between dog owners and of course dogs. Mostly that happens on weekends or holidays when more dogs are around. Still, doesn't happen all the time that I've seen. As far as the location and furnishings go, I think this place is amazing. It IS still a public park, so be prepared to deal with all kinds of dogs and owners--from the really invested, friendly owner and good dog, to the one who ignores his/her dog's bullying behavior (and droppings) while he/she works on the laptop or talks on the phone the whole time. It's a good place to exercise and socialize if you stay in control of your dog and are willing to talk to other owners about issues if they arise between dogs. read more

I am quite disappointed in the rating Amaryllia gave to the Oakhurst Dog Park especially after reading the review and noticing the glaring "From what I can see when I drove past it...."! Wow if I wrote three sentences for everything I simply drove past I would easily have the most reviews on Yelp. Maybe I would even be paid at such a prolific level of output. I may be ruffling the feathers of the First To Review yelper but it just read as a dire attempt to be just that and to get the little blue star notched on their Yelp bedpost. My apologies, I just could not get past the review as a avid user of this dog park. I have been using the Oakhurst Dog Park now since June after Lauren and I had rescued little Oodles Bananas McGee from the Atlanta Humane Society. I am sure there more versatile and better funded dog parks in the metro area but I find this one to be great. On any given day you will find mostly responsible owners and a huge variety of dogs. Even better is that the park is very community oriented mostly patroned by locals in the Kirkwood and Oakhurst areas. We have met a number of people from outside of the immediate area as well do to other dog parks' overcrowding. There is nearly 2 full acres of doggy play land. The open field and entry/exit is clearly visible from East Lake Drive. There is a wooded area about the same size uphill to the left that features trails and a break from the direct sun. The entire dog park is fenced included an area also visible from the street that used to be an enormous 'mud hole'. We have been told it is where dogs loved to dive in and go home an absolute mess! Kudos to Decatur for cleaning it up.......or at least fencing it in :) While on the inside, there are several stainless steel water bowls and a water fountain for both us and the pups. Don't park in the Boys and Girls club as you may get towed pretty quick. I have parked on both 3rd Ave and the other smaller street that intersects E Lake (south of the B&Gs Club) and have never had a problem. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Oakhurst Dog Park is a gem. The dogs are friendly every time we go, and the owners, in general, are not pretentious about their dogs. This is in contrast to other dog parks in Atlanta (*cough* Piedmont *cough*). There's a nice wooded area to walk through and the gates are sturdy and well-kept. Owners seem to pick up after their dogs (although there's always the occasional poo). There's also a water source. Sidebar: DO NOT leash your dogs within the dog park. It makes them more aggressive because it disables their ability to escape. They become afraid of the other dogs around them and disaster is sure to follow. This is a great dog peak! Shade for the summer & wide, open spaces if your dog likes to run. The people are nice & friendly which I don't experience at Adair park. The vibe is much better here. This is the first public dog park I've been to. The dog park we previously frequented was in our complex. It was nice, especially considering it was in a complex. Bigger than what you would expect, but not really that big. So, I'd driven by the Oakhurst Dog Park before actually taking the dogs. I thought it was small, but it was fenced, outside, and I could figure out a way to wear the 1 yr old lab into submission. :) In reality - the place is HUGE compare to what I thought is was! You don't notice how wide it is because of the wooded area near the roadside. It also goes down a hill and back pretty deep. There are trails you can walk inside the fenced area. Not much of a grassy area, but plenty of place to just let the dogs run. There's a small fenced area, which I assume is for small dogs. However, if it has rained anytime recently, the dog will probably sink into the muck, and you will definitely need to give them a bath before getting into the car. (That and the lack of a grassy area are the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.) There were a couple other dogs, but it wasn't crowded. I went at 3pm on a thursday. Will be back! Mentioning because I wasn't sure - there is a water station with bowls, and waste bags available. A couple benches/tables to sit and watch from as well. read more

The setup of this smaller, fenced-in dogpark is an open area in the middle, with a small pen for unsure/shy dogs, and a wooded trail on the outside perimeter of the park. There are benches around the park and there is a water fountain during the warmer months. Parking: You can use the church lot across the street, but on Sundays you have to park around the corner on the street. Water: In warmer months there is a fountain; however, starting in November to ?, there is no water so, you have to bring your own! I didn't know this when I went on Thanksgiving Day, so we had to leave early for the pup to get some water. Rain: No go when it's raining or has rained as the park turns into a mud field. People: The people here are typically very friendly. It has a laidback atmosphere. read more

I haven't seen many dog fights or anything there so everyone is usually good about bringing well behaved and socialized dogs. This is where my dogs go and easily one of my favorite places to bring them. The park is spacious and majority of the dogs I come across have been friendly and well behaved, same goes for the owners too. I have two dogs with very different personalities, one being an outgoing Aussie and the other a small silky terrier, though is outgoing with people, is timid around other dogs that isn't our Aussie. Both of them love this park. More than half is a huge open field with ample benches and tables and the other half a wooded area with tables and benches as well. The park stays pretty clean except it can get muddy from those rainy days. Also you can park across the street near the church (except on Sunday) or near the YMCA next door. read more

LOVE.... Oakhurst dog park was perfect for a Saturday afternoon off with the dog. It was our first time coming here and we can't wait to come back. She had a blast running around with the other dogs that were there. The one trouble maker in the mix was quickly leashed and taken outside. I appreciated knowing that the owners here seemed to take responsibility over their pets. The park itself is pretty large and has a fair amount of wooded area. There's plenty of benches and tree stumps for owners to sit on while their dogs roam around. I also liked how there were several water bowls out. We plan on coming back soon and in the hot Georgia summer you can't get enough water. read more

I ventured out with my mastiff/shepherd mix this morning to try this dog park. Normally I'm not a huge fan of dog parks, there is always that one guy that has the over aggressive mutt that wants to pick a fight. That guy was there and quickly told to control his dog or leave by several people within the park. Normally you see that guy and that dog ignored while others leash up the well behaved dogs running around a leave. Overall this is a well put together park. There is some woodland area to play in as well as large open field. There are plenty of water bowls hanging around and a place to fill them. Just keep in mind that dog parks are GREAT for dogs that are well mannered. If your dog is under socialized or aggressive towards other dogs do us all a favor and either be prepared to leash your dog in a moments notice or leave. Dog parks normally aren't a great place for small children either. I saw a child mowed over by a lab and the parent was upset that the dog was running so close to her child. Keep in mind her child was about 50 yards away from her and under-supervised. And last but not least clean up after your dog. read more

Supposedly you need to live in Decatur and have a resident card to go to this park but no one asked me for one the two times I went...and I don't live in Decatur. oh well....oopsie! The park is huge and there were at least 20 dogs running around today. It was great. The people were all very kind and the dogs had a blast. The dogs have plenty of room to run around, the field is really long and pretty wide too. A few frisbees and tennis balls laying around let us play fetch when my dog wasn't playing with other dogs. It also has a few "hills" which is nice for the dogs to get out that doggie energy! Only reason I gave 4 stars is because I wish they had more benches around the park. They only had a few towards the entrance, and then towards the far end of the park. It's OK though, what matters is that my dog came home exhausted and happy! Also, they cut the water off in the winter so you have to bring your own water if you want your pooch to drink while you're there. read more

This park has a lot of pluses and just a few cons. So I'll start with the pluses. There is a lot of run space for the dogs. I mean a lot. There is a huge unshaded section and even walking paths all within the fenced park. There is a naturally shaded section, via trees and wooded space, that is probably the best part of the park. All of the park is extremely well maintained by the visitors of the park. It is purely up to the visitors to maintain the park, and therefore the community has really stepped it up to make sure the park stays clean and safe. There is a water spigot and hose outside of the park, a water fountain inside the park, and 2 water spigots inside the park for water usage (it is on all year round), and the city supplies free mulch to the park every spring. There are usually 30+ dogs on any given Saturday and is usually even pretty busy on a rainy day. There is even a free parking lot across the street from the park for ease of entrance Now to the cons: A lot of the local residences have small children. There is a children's park located next to the free parking lot. Since a lot of the parents want to share the experience of taking the dog to the park, a lot of residences bring their children, their children's strollers, their children's snacks, etc. Obviously this can cause a stir since you're mixing children who have yet to learn to walk with dogs who can blatantly knock them over. Also, some parents will bring children who want to play inside the dog park and then get upset when the dogs want to play too. Almost all of the parents watch their kids very closely but if your dog doesn't like children it is better to go during the week to the park versus on a bright sunny spring day. read more

Love this park. My two German wire haired pointers really enjoying running around and exploring. It's big, has a wooded area lots of places to sit. There's a big variety of dogs that come but it's never too crowded during the week! I haven't seen any aggressive dogs here (but I don't doubt that some make appearances). There's nothing this park is missing people complaining about aggressive dogs are silly .. That happens everywhere . Irresponsible dog owners are a real thing. read more

Great atmosphere! Just a few snooty dog people (that's to be expected at dog parks everywhere, especially in Decatur). The change of terrain allows for your dog to hit full speed or hike up the large hill. The wooded area offers much-needed shade, and the mud holes allow for the dogs to stay a little cool and dirty. The only problem is, there aren't any separate areas for large and small dogs, so if you have a tiny dog that's all bark and no bite, this may not be the place for you. read more

Oakhurst is a nice dog park. I come here some on the weekends when I have a foster dog and I don't want to deal with the craziness at Piedmont. I like the wooded area in Oakhurst. You don't generally see that at most dog parks. I also dig the response by the City to the massive mudhole in the middle of the park. It is now fenced in and off limits to water/mud loving pups.
