Like surprises? Me too! While I was checking neighborhoods house shopping, I stumbled across this little neighborhood park, that is literally across the street from a row of houses. At first glance you might poo poo this park as just a neighborhood spot to play softball and push kids on swings, and if you only hung around the immediate area of the park, you'd be right, but this little secret park has another secret called the South Peachtree Creek Trail! The South Peachtree Creek Trail can be accessed from Medlock park by taking the trail on the furthest to the left trail. This sends you to a green wonderland filled with trees as far as the eye can see, which weaves its way through residential space. South Peachtree creek trail is 1.12 miles in length with mile markers evenly spaced, and the trail itself runs alongside South Peachtree Creek, although it's hard to see or appreciate until you find yourself moving past mile marker 0.29. While the main trail is boardwalk and paved, pay attention to the natural dirt trails that you can make out from the upper boardwalks. These little feeder trails can lead you right down to the creek at times for a better look Towards the end of the trail you lose a lot of trees, gain a lot of graffiti and also get to a bit of construction where it seems like they may be making additions to the trails. Guess i'll have to come back to find out! Parking is nicely sized, although if the softball fields are all full and going, chances are you'll have to park on the side of the road, but on a Saturday afternoon with two games going, there was more than enough parking to be found. Medlock Park itself, if you're after a nice walking experience, really isn't a great choice, but walk a little bit to the connecting South Peachtree Creek Trail, and you have yourself a close to 2.5 mi round trip trail to get your steps in however you like them. If I lived here i'd be on this trail daily. Now that I know that it exists, i'll 100% be back!!

Medlock Pool is located in the Medlock Park neighborhood, adjacent to baseball fields and a modest, but fun, playground. The park is also connected to a walking path that leads to Mason Mill Park and beyond. The PATH deserves its own review, but trust me--it's great. Now, the pool. This is a Dekalb County-owned facility. It is older and I would describe it as a little run down. As of this review, there is one pool, which is fairly large in size and ranges from 3 feet deep to 11 feet deep. There are two low-dives and several areas to enter the pool via steps or ladders. We have been a few times this year and it has been clean and uncrowded. There is usually room to stretch out while swimming without bumping into anybody. We are often, but not always able to find an empty picnic table. There is an area of the facility that used to be a 1-foot deep baby pool and will one (unknown) day be a splash pad for young children. The good: -- Very affordable at $3/adults and $2/children. -- Life jackets available for children if needed. -- Chill atmosphere with families and patrons of all ages. -- Shaded area* of the deck with picnic tables The meh: -- It's a little run down overall. For 2018 it seems in better shape than it has been some other years, like maybe they made some small repairs in the off season. -- Related to the above--Dekalb is overall somewhat inconsistent in maintaining their facilities and keeping the public informed of events such as swim team dates and times. Another example, sun shades were removed and didn't return until the pool had been open a few weeks. -- The hours. All Dekalb pools keep the same hours for the most part. This pool is open 12-6 most days and 1-6 on Sundays. I think many more neighborhood families would use the pool if it was open in the evening, when people get home from work and want to relax, play, and enjoy the sun since it doesn't get dark until almost 9 pm. -- Because there's no baby pool and the pool is not zero entry, I did not visit much when my kids were younger. It's not the best place to bring multiple toddlers who are too young to stand up in the shallow end, or at least I didn't feel comfortable doing that unless I had another adult with me. The bad: -- The bathroom/changing area is old and smelly. Admittedly my bathroom standards are higher than some people's so maybe they aren't THAT bad? They aren't great, though. I live close by so I just avoid using these facilities as much as I can. Because this is a public pool, all are welcome. Come on down, y'all!

I love going for runs and walks through the nature trails here!

This park is connected to a beautiful cemetery with such interesting history and views. It is so calming walking the paved paths amongst the burial sites and seeing the love and adoration of the families caring for their ancestors' resting places over the years. This park also has a tennis court, a public pool, a basketball court, a small baseball field, a general field, a pond, and a playground. It is clean and quiet, and those visiting the park are incredibly friendly. I tend to rate parks based on their visitors, and most of my "good evenings" were met with a very pleasant response unlike some of the more busy parks in ATL. There were families riding their bikes together, couples strolling amongst the graveyard, an older gentleman fishing in the pond, young men competing on the basketball court, people respectfully walking their dogs, a yoga session happening in the field and much more. This park is a catch-all for any age and experience. I'm sure I'm missing some of the amenities -- it has a lot to offer. Shout out to Decatur for maintaining this little gem. I highly recommend.

If traveling from…read moredowntown on I-20 eastbound, Glenwood Park is just off exit 59B (Memorial Drive, Glenwood Avenue). If traveling westboard towards downtown, take exit 60 (US 23, Moreland Avenue). This low key neighborhood, sandwiched between Grant Park and East Atlanta Village, is sort of "hidden." I think if you asked the average metro Atlantan if they've heard of Glenwood Park, they'd probably say no. Glenwood Park opened the same year as Midtown's Atlantic Station. Like Atlantic Station, Glenwood Park is all about urban and sustainable living. Unlike Atlantic Station, Glenwood Park isn't big. It's relatively small at just under 30 acres in total size. It's a lot quieter and isn't as commercialized. The property feels more residential than anything with quiet streets and wide sidewalks with nicely manicured lawns. After about a decade of existence, the development still looks great. There's a park/greenspace with a picturesque pond and a beautiful fountain. The community collects almost two-million gallons of its own well water per year in order to irrigate the park and street trees. There's a community garden where residents can reserve plots filled with high quality, organic soil. There's a dog park, playground, and neighborhood pool. One courtyard features a little stone fountain and full-sized bocce ball court. The layout was designed with pedestrians in mind, though there's plenty of free street parking and parking lots located on the development. It's clean and feels safe. The Atlanta BeltLine runs through the neighborhood in a north-south line. Food-lovers probably know Glenwood Park because of its restaurants, Gunshow, The Shed at Glenwood, and Vickery's Bar & Grill. Local celebrity chef Kevin Gillespie opened Gunshow in 2013 with fellow chefs Andreas Muller and Joey Ward. It may very well be *the* best restaurant in Atlanta. It's certainly one of the most fun and unique with it's American-style dim sum. You can read my review of Gunshow here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/gunshow-atlanta-2?hrid=_Zvxkqv86FBPQtUBysU21Q. The Shed at Glenwood is a modern farm-to-table restaurant with seasonal fare. Vickery's, known for its cocktails and burgers, opened its second Atlanta location in Glenwood Park. Drip coffee shop also has a location here.

I'm not sure how to review a neighborhood but it shouldn't be too hard. This place is great -…read morebungalow style houses, flats, condos, townhomes and great neighbors. There are a handful of retail businesses on the south end of the neighborhood that we frequent and the usual smattering of intown amenities - proximity to downtown, Virginia Highland, Starlight Six Drive-In. You get the point. Since moving here in 2009 we have made so many good friends and really love where we live. There's a community garden, a pool/gym and a dedicated dog park free to residents (as of this writing). A brownfield redevelopment and product of Green Street properties, GWP is home to the 2005 Southern Living Idea House. Many of the homes are distinct in design, presentation and vary in style but all still flow together. Most lots are very small but we managed to eke out a wonderful front flower garden and transform the triangle shaped garden in the back into a treed and flowered sanctuary. We tried our hand at gardening in the community garden but the summer Atlanta sun and invasive weeds had us handily beat by mid July. In October each year, the Hotoberfest beer festival is held in and around the main park (now Brewer Park) drawing a few thousand people to the neighborhood. Less exciting but nearly as big a draw (maybe stretching here) is the annual garage sale. A handful of movies have been filmed here including the Blind Side and Hall Pass as is part of the Real Housewives of Atlanta (one of them lives here as of this writing). Like other neighborhoods that started mid real estate boom but not finished before the bang, there are empty lots, foreclosures and short sales. The last builder to get going has long ago gone out of business and a few independent developers have put up new homes but it remains to be seen if the original vision of Green Street and the first residents will be fulfilled. However, this remains a one-of-a-kind neighborhood south of I-20 and a great alternative to the stunning but prohibitively expensive homes in Morningside, Virginia Highland and the handful of other established intown neighborhoods. Being so close to everything available in Atlanta has spoiled us for going to festivals (Inman Park, Dogwood, Summerfest, Shade), the drive in and so much good food + drink in walking distance (you hear me $2 PBR at ten places I can walk to). The EAV and Grant Park are both short walks and great neighborhoods in and of themselves. The Zoo and Turner field are less than 3 miles away as are dozens of the best restaurants in Atlanta. The beltline trailhead is just across I-20 so you can walk off all the beer and carbs. Definitely kid friendly, we've seen at least six newborns arrive since we moved here. The little ones have a playground, a music class and no shortage of friends to grow up with. We will be adding our own in February 2012 so we're planning on being in Glenwood Park for the foreseeable future.

It was a 4 out of 5 rating for me since there were no trail markers, it was hard to determine which route one was walking on. Also, it's clear one side of the trail is walked on more often than the other due to the creative trail walking that had to be crossed in order to walk a true loop trail.

There is a small parking lot that appeared nearly full when we arrived. You basically need to parallel park around a circular drive. The outer rim filled up first, but when we returned from hiking the inner rim was also full. You can apparently hike a short loop in Hahn Woods itself, but the real draw (to me) was to cross under Houston Mill and follow the trail along South Peachtree Creek to connect with Lullwater Park. I would strongly recommend not taking this hike very soon after it has rained; wait for a dry period. There is at least one point when you have to make a short jump across a small side stream. This shouldn't present a huge problem unless anyone in your party is physically challenged in some way. The only major point of interest (other than enjoying the natural setting) along the trail was to see the Yerkes Primate Center. I'd heard about it for years and knew roughly where it was located, but had never actually seen it until we did this hike. There is also no shortage of graffiti (some of it amusing) on the underside of the Houston Mill Road bridge.
