The selection at Oak is fantastic - sleek, edgy, carefully edited, with subtle but well-established labels the likes of which you might find at Barney's but not at Bergdorf. Prices are a bit steep, even on sale, but the browsing is top-notch. (Incidentally, Oak has a fantastic online shop with cool photos and styling.) You got your Acne, your Surface to Air, your Alexander Wang and Rachel Comey. Cheap Monday and Dolce Vita represent the more accessible end, along with newcomers like complexgeometries. The downstairs is much more affordable, with pieces you might see at places like pixiemarket. I suspect, though, that some items are marked up - I saw a dress I got through Nasty Gal Vintage going for almost double what I paid, so just be wary. The staff is a little disorganized, but they mean well. Just don't be afraid to remind them to help you. Dressing rooms are huge with huge mirrors, but maybe a bit lacking in light. Oak is definitely worth a visit. Just remember, you worked hard for that paycheck. read more

It's sad that my first review on Yelp is going to be a negative one. I just have to let it out because the overall experience is very upsetting. I purchased 5 items from the site that were on sale. The shipment came fairly quickly within 2 days. I noticed a pair of jeans I ordered was sent in wrong size and a t-shirt has 3 holes on one arm. I brought back the items to the Bond St. store for exchange, and was told that I need to email/call in advance for a RA number. i went home and emailed both the customer service and the return departments, and received no replies for about a week. Then I wrote another email to the return department, again 5 days went by without any response. I called the Custom Service today and left a voicemail and finally got a reply via email, saying that "Due to our return policy as indicated on OAKNYC.com, we cannot accept returns for sale items." So I am supposed to pay for the wrong size and the damaged item they delivered? By sharing my first and last baffling experience with Oak's online store, I hope it could at least help someone not to go through the same frustration elsewhere. read more

Amateur, subpar customer service standards, based upon the useless info provided. The phone number listed for this location, for example, sends you to a robot voice advising it is out of date. Despite the website assurances regarding security, my account appeared to be hacked and no one at the main NYC or Brooklyn offices can be reached as of 4PM EST. Flimsy website security, numbers that send you directly to voicemail, and lack of an actual customer service presence is not a good look. When you and your customers are being played by a hacker, this would not be the moment to pull affectation and indifference. Your business needs to fix it and make it right. Let me start off by saying that I usually really like Oak, the store and the merchandise, but today I am furious with the way I was treated with regards to an online order I made this holiday season. I purchased a pair of shoes on December 11th for 500$ that were meant to be a Christmas gift for my father. Knowing that it takes 7-8 business days to ship I figured I would be okay, especially considering that I live in Brooklyn ( where they ship from apparently ). Days went by and around the 22nd I wrote an email to check on my order as it still had been "processing" on the website - I never received a response from anyone and none of the salespersons could help me ( it didn't seem that they cared that they couldn't either ). Now it's December 30th and I get an email saying that they no longer have the shoes and that I have to wait a full billing cycle until I can get reimbursed for my money. I am by no means wealthy and 500 to me is a lot of money just to be in transit ( If I even receive it from them ). Even more than that however, I am extremely frustrated that I won't be able to get another gift for my dad until the money is returned. Ordering online from them is a nightmare. It took 10 days for my order to process, I tried to contact them twice during this period, the first attempt I never got a response, second time they printed a shipping label and gave me the tracking number so I would leave them alone but never shipped my package. They refunded an item I purchased (but never updated their website to show the item was out of stock) and shipped my package 2 days later. Although this was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had for such a well known shop, their selection is great and their prices are reasonable (for a boutique). Based on the reviews I figured I would like this store, and was surprised I didn't. I only experienced the ground floor though, so if the better clothes are upstairs it's possible I only saw the cheaper stuff. For reference, I like Rick Owens, Veronique Branquinho, Helmut Lang and Ann Demeulemeester, so the way Oak's clothing is described (dark, monochromatic, urban, drape-y, assymetrical) is definitely in my wheelhouse. But I didn't like the clothes. There was *a lot* of very heavy bulky cotton, which is not my thing. And I felt like for this price point the quality overall was lacking: seams were slightly puckered or crooked, threads were loose, and some cuts seemed to sit or hang or twist awkwardly. A few things were interesting, but not sufficiently so for me to even bother trying them on. The shoe selection is the best thing in this store IMO: LD Tuttle :-) (Reviewers here BTW disagree about whether the staff is rude/snotty/pretentious or not. This review is purely on my on-line purchase experience. Placed order on 4/23 on 4 items. On 4/28 4:12PM I received FEDEX shipment tracking for all 4 items. 10 minutes later, I got order cancellation notification on 3 out of the 4 items due to them out of stock. Next day 4/29 I looked on line and found that one of the items that was supposedly out of stock still shows up on line, so I emailed customer service and asked if the item is really out of stock. I didn't get any response. On 5/4, i took a chance and reordered that item, which was still showing up on the website. On 5/7 I received shipping tracking on the item. On 5/13 (today) the item is currently at Fedex location waiting to be picked up. At 12:55PM, more than two weeks after my original inquiry email, I received an email from OAK customer service saying that the item that I re-ordered is indeed out of stock. OAK owners need to check who's running the store and working their customer service because they've been playing hooky for at least 2 weeks now. read more

This place is overpriced hipster heaven and I'm not gonna lie, I kinda like it. I should also clarify my above statement. OAK doesn't overprice its stuff, it's the wares/wears (get it?) that are expensive in the first place. It is well edited, though, and there are all the usual suspects in terms of designers. There's the edgy hipster designers that have been around for years (Acne, Alexander Wang, Filippa K, Grey Ant, Comme des Garcons) and always a few newcomers that you've never seen before. I love the design of the store - men's on one side, women's on the other. The dressing rooms are also nice and spacious, which I appreciate. There are some shoes in the back as well and a small selection of accessories, jewelry and small leather goods. The most exciting thing about OAK though is AOK downstairs (brand new! its lower priced (recession-friendlier) sister. The salesgirl said that it's for a younger demographic but what she really meant is that everything's cheaper. I mean, yes, the clothes are less "dressy" overall but it's all the same aesthetic. I. LOVE. THIS. STORE. You walk in to it's stark whitewashed walls and these strange hill-like structures that seem to come out of the cement ground in the middle of the store. Then you realize that these 2 mound-ish things have shelves cut into them and are used to hold jeans, shoes, and other miscellaneous clothes. On left wall, all the way to the back, hangs the men's racks, a lot of which can also be considered unisex; on the right, the women's clothes. The women's magical, magical clothes. The back wall is used for magazines, books, bags, candles, wallets, and belts. There is a small case of AWESOME jewelry. And then you get to the dressing rooms: DARK and CAVERNOUS with the only lighting being the backlight from the sides of the mirror in each room, enclosed by LARGE and HEAVY velvet(-ish) curtains. Predominant colors include black, white, grey, and blue. Designers you've never heard of because they're just that hip. Clothes you can never find anywhere else because they're usually sold out in a day. Case in point: Rick Owens' drkshdw line. Almost guaranteed that in the same weekend they unpack the boxes and hang the clothes up, it'll be out of stock. The one semi creepy/funny/awkward thing about the store is the counter. It's in the far back corner, and unless you're something like 6 feet tall, there's no way you can see over it. The sales people will go back there to ring you up, and if they're talking to you (and if you're 5'3" like me), all you'll be able to see is the tops of their heads. And only if they have some crazy mohawk. I could honestly go on and on about OAK, and it's not even that big of a store. It just makes me so happy every time I go - even just looking at its website make me happy. And yes, I'm very aware after reading this that now the whole world will be able to tell that I have some serious issues with shopping. Worst shopping experience. I would never recommend shopping here. 1. I was charged twice for my order. I emailed repeatedly to let them know of this issue, HOWEVER, they continued to deny it even after going in person to show them my bank statement from the Wells Fargo app. 2. I asked to cancel my entire order because of being charged twice and receiving poor customer service. They never canceled the order. Upon receiving the order, I went into the store personally to return the item because of already trying to cancel it and being charged twice. Because it was a an on sale item 40% off they refused to take it back even though my reasons for returning it were because of the poor customer service and not to do with the item itself. I feel so incredibly frustrated and not valued as a customer. I continued to be hear the same reply "it's just policy.." I guess horrible customer service is part of their policy. I wish I would have seen the reviews beforehand. As most business savvy and compassionate people would know, it's far better to satisfy and value customers, thus creating long term customers, as opposed to ripping off a customer for one amount of money and losing the customer for good. Five stars all the way, here we go! Okay, so I came here with a bare wallet, save for the cab fare to get back to my apartment. Boy was that a good and bad idea. When we walked into Oak for the first time, my friend and I gasped. Like awful "gay" gasp. I felt so homo for that moment. But we had good reason. Oak's selection is well cut, highly fashion forward, and well edited. You won't find much that is good for under $100, which makes a student fashionista such as I shudder with a cringing wallet. But the garments at Oak are Koala-Tea (quality, yo). I'll soon be shedding my thrift store threads for some sick tops to wear with leggings. Which seems to be the uniform with Oak. If you like long, flowy, unisex-y garments, then you'll be in hog heaven! If you like modern cut pieces with amazing design, you'll love Oak. Everything is either well tailored or ethereal in shape, skimming the body oh-so-well. Accessories are neo-fashion goth, with Vicodin necklaces and armor-like rings. Very European in design and sizing, as well as very Scandinavian in look. I was a little skeptical about going at first, reading the crap reviews on salespeople. But I have to say, after going to the Williamsburg location as well, the employees here are great. I was greeted right as I walked in, and helped all the way through from the sales floor, to the fitting rooms, and all through checkout. The girl who first helped me was darling, and the gentleman who helped as well was great with styling advice for day to day wear. If you skim Lookbook.nu for hours on end, you'll probably have an appreciation for Oak. Something about the entire feel of the store is inspiring, it's like shopping in a downtown gallery over shopping in a normal boutique. I'd almost have to take off a half of a star for location. It's pretty close to some subways, but they are all local stops, which isn't fun for someone who lives on the Upper East and refuses to take local trains mostly. Sidewalks are a little crazy, and construction is being taken place on Houston right near the subway - definitely not a pretty walk. But, that is ever changing, so I didn't include it in the overall rating. However, the store feels larger than the Brooklyn location, with a better choice of style. Overall, Oak has a lasting appeal with me. I just purchased a few items from the store, and I get nothing but great compliments on them. It's a well kept secret for ultimate fashionistas - trust only to bring the ones who will pay for the premium digs. I think it's one of the only places in Manhattan I'd be willing to drop that much cash on kind of basic apparel (a lot of minimalism in the collections). If you can afford paying over $200-$500 for more of the awesome pieces, go now. Drop everything and go. It's so worth it. Even if you can't just go to gawk at the price tags and try on things you may not even be able to afford. read more

First let me not contribute to the negativity surrounding the staff. Maybe i'm a little bias as I used to work for them, but there staff thats hired is pretty cool. Every time I enter Oak, I'm always greeted and I am a person who doesn't need attention because I am frequent shopper. Anyway, the interior design is impeccable compared to other boutiques who just have two large sides of racks featuring designers. The two best aspects of the Oak soho store I think is their best are the fitting rooms and the arrangement of the higher prices upstairs and the lower prices (Aoak line) downstairs. The battle between high and low is kind of metaphorically corny, but the originality of the concept is genius because as shopper of the avant-garde high end design aesethic not a lot of boutiques in New York does this. This gives Oak more revenue featuring cheaper items. But the large deep caved like dressing rooms are a mystical feature. One antique chair sitting in the corner of the room as if there was someone there before you who did something bad. (laughing at my sadistic ways) As an artist, you have to appreciate that mysterious of the dressing room, the darkness you start to disappeared in as you try on a Songizo vest and your body starts to sink into the mirror. And for a bonus the mirror and bright light on top of mirror has to be magic, because everybody looks good in that mirror. Besides the great deco of the store, the designers Oak features are really good. As being an ex member of the Oak team, the buyers are really good and have great taste and style. Oak are one of those global stores known for having excuksive pieces by designers such as; Songizo, gear3, Rad Hourani, and among others. And the prices are affordable for a low income student. Just listen to the other reviews and don't buy from here. I was stupid enough to buy from their site before reading the reviews so when my order didn't update in any way for 2 weeks, I gave the Brooklyn store a call (as other people recommended). As soon as the guy picked up, he knew what I was going to say and he told me that he wasn't responsible for any shipping problems or inquiries so I had to call customer service. This showed that they clearly KNOW the problem and probably had plenty of time to make it right through at least letting the customers know. So I called customer service and when I asked what the update on my order was, she told me that the items (from Black Friday) were actually sold out and that she would have to cancel my order. I expected them to say something like this but hearing it was nonetheless annoying. I then asked them when it would be back in stock because I just needed them before Christmas because they were gifts, and she told me that they would be back in Spring (lol). I asked her why they didn't let me know of this and if they would've kept on hiding it if I haven't called and she said "I was going to tell you by the end of today". Like ???????????? that is way too convenient for them to say at that moment and sounded like complete BS to me. After the phone call, they did issue the refund right away...But I really think that they wouldn't have said anything for a loooong time if I haven't called. Also, the items I ordered say that they're all in stock online so either they need to update their site OR they're lying about them being out of stock because they don't want to sell their items for so cheap (it was 50% off). I'm glad I called in time to get new gifts for Christmas but also feel bad for people who are just patiently waiting for their "sold out" items to arrive. The website looks cool, the selection looks cool, the customer service not so cool, worst online shopping experience I can remember. Hard to locate customer support, no email confirmations of the order. Web site says my order was processed and cc charged successfully even when the product was never really in stock. (though the lack of an email confirmation after the order was processed was a red flag for me) It was a roulette wheel process finding anyone knowledgeable to talk to about my order. I had to call every single one of their 4 stores multiple times every day for 5 days and still could not get a definitive response. Finally got an answer today. i wish i could live in this place. Oak has a very specific aesthetic, which is essentially long, flowy, often asymmetrical, and usually limited to a grayscale color palette. i would normally roll my eyes after hearing this, but this place really is great. usually these types of cuts and styles only work on tall, famished models - not actual human bodies - but for the most part their clothes do fit the way they were intended to and are not astronomically-priced. and though one may think this more edgy style means that you look out of date from season to season, some stuff i've gotten there i've worn going on four years now, and some of it they still carry too, which is a real vote of confidence on Oak's part. most places try and manufacture seasonal ephemerality into their styles to keep you coming back year-after-year, but this place's dedicated clientele (myself included) come back because the store knows better. they have a well-curated collection. about 2/3rds of the stuff they carry is their own brand (A.OK), and the other 1/3rd is a spattering of great brands like Kill City, Saturdays, and Ksubi. A.OK is well-made, well-fitting, stylish, and a bit more affordable than the other brands they carry. still expensive-ish? yes. but worth it because it lasts? i would say yes. i have no idea where the clothes are manufactured, but because they're relatively high quality fabrics (though not always color safe) and well assembled (even if the seams are skewed sometimes), and have rather limited runs each year, I would assume that they are locally manufactured. i don't shop at places for this reason specifically, but it's nice to know that you're getting something unique that isn't sold all over the country. the in-store customer service is also excellent. you kind of expect the people to be rude when you walk in, but they're surprisingly helpful when trying to find other sizes in either store (Noho or Brooklyn). be wary of their online/by phone customer service, as it's kind of non-existent and i'm pretty sure it routes to someone's cell phone. that can be frustrating, but you can always go to/call the store for more helpful assistance. this store is always a first stop for me. love it. read more

Horrible, non existent customer service. I first tried to place an online order for three items and then my money was refunded a week later and no package or email with shipment notification or tracking number was ever received. I emailed several time with no response and finally called their customer service line. The women said one of the items was sold out (even though it was still available on the website) and if I wanted her to send me the other two items. Since it had already been two weeks I just told her to cancel it. Im on round two with OAK, and wanted to give them another chance since I purchased one of their shirts on Shopbob and love it. I figured if I selected the two-day shipping it would get here in a timely manner. That was three days ago. I received a tacking number that just says the label was created and nothing is being updated. I fear the worst for this one as well. I tried called the customer service line, but after a few rings it hangs up every time. I wrote an email but am not holding my breath for a response. As someone who is in the fashion industry (and has never written and Yelp review before) I find this kind of service unacceptable at any price point, no less when Im spending over $100 on a tshirt. PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY FROM THEIR WEBSITE. WARNING: Oaknyc online store is a gamble. Their online store and customer service is consistently poor. Don't just take my word for it. Please read all their reviews regarding their online store. To be fair, Oaknyc got great collection of edgy and unique clothing and their prices are reasonable but not competitive. Their sales can be good. The shipping is fairly quick but you got to pay for it. If you order from Oaknyc website an item that is not on sale and received the correct item in terms of size, colour or style--great, you will be satisfy. God forbid if you received an incorrect or missing item from your order. Here is my shabby experience of my online purchase and their customer service: I purchase about seven items from their online store at different times without any problem. Recently, however, I ordered a BLACK sandal but received a beige colour sandal instead. I immediately contact customer service via email about the incorrect item and mentioned that I will be shipping the incorrect colour sandal back to them and that I expect them to reimburse the shipping cost since the mistake was on their behalf. I got a quick reply from an unidentified customer service representative and he/she unapologetically said he/she will send out the correct sandal and I will be reimburse for the shipping cost once he/she receive my return item. I returned the sandal and provide a receipt of the shipping cost $40. I track my return online and it appeared that they have received the sandal a week ago yet they did not reply to me nor send out the correct colour sandal to me. I then email them about the sandal---NOT A REPLY OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MY EMAIL FOR A WEEK. This indifference is unacceptable in an online business. I sent out a second email and demand someone to reply or acknowledge my email and two days later an identified Oaknyc person reply to me with a semi apologetic message and the tracking number for the correct colour sandal that has been sent out. Five days later I did received a correct colour sandal but no sign nor mention of shipping cost was reimbursed. I contact them via email about this and again no reply to me. This entire dragging ordeal has been a month long. I got tired of emailing and waiting for their reply so I decided to review their poor customer service here. This is not simply about the $40 shipping cost that I unjustly have to incurred. Rather it's about their indifferent, tardy and virtually no reply to their customer. I'm frustrated and diaspointed of their company's ethos. I buy 90% of my clothing, shoes and bags online and occasionally an online company will send me a wrong item. I return the wrong item and they pay for the shipping cost, and without asking, they offer a discount for my next purchase. The return as quick, simple and pleasant. Most importantly, they were responsive and genuinely apologetic. To sum up, I should not have to pay extra for shipping to return an incorrect item that I received. I expect a response from the company within five days max and I shouldn't have to send a second email to inquire about my first email concerning the lack of response. Oaknyc have expanded their company rapidly within two years. They have opened up many stores nationally and internationally yet their customer service both online and in store are dreadful and virtually non-existent. Firstly, amazing selection of clothes if money is no object. Secondly, what the hell is up with the sales staff there? I can do without the attitude - cranky, slow and unprofessional. I get it - it's not the pinnacle of anybody's career, but management should really consider how their staff is treating customers because at the end of the day - it's NYC and there are a thousand other high end boutique stores that people can choose instead. I bought a pair of shoes during a sale. One shoe was without the special leather shoelace but the sales rep told me that the other shoelace was inside the box. I didn't bother to question him but when I got home realized that there was no shoelace. I brought the shoes right back the next day and another representative - Emerald (who had seen me there the day before) gave me nothing but attitude about it suggesting that I should "go buy another shoelace and then return to the store with the receipt and they would reimburse me". She wouldn't give me a refund or an additional discount so that I could just go buy the new laces and not waste another trip back to the store. She was extremely surly and unhelpful even when I told her that this was very disappointing and I would be writing a review about it and speaking to the manager. As I see on yelp now, there are plenty of similar reviews about the staff being snotty and unprofessional. Ordered an item when it was on sale and excitedly waited for my package to arrive in the mail. A week later (when the sale is over) I am told that my item was oversold. I ask to be shipped the item when it is back in stock, but am refunded anyway. When I see it is back in stock two weeks later, they refuse to honor the price I originally paid. Customer service was extremely rude. I personally feel that OAK didn't want to honor my purchase price as the sale discount was high (I stacked a coupon code on top of a sale) and pretended to be out of stock. read more

We live in Denver and saw their stuff in a local boutique. My husband thought he was being sweet and ordered a wrap from their site for me as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately, he wasn't aware of the fourteen day return policy, and of course, I opened the gift one week after the fourteen days. We sent a return request hoping that they would still honor the return, but they never responded. I understand that fourteen days is their policy, but given that we live across country and it was the holidays, it would have been nice for them to at least reply. I would have been happy to exchange it for a different size or another item. Now my husband is out $135 for an item of clothing that I cannot wear. I am very disappointed in their customer service and will definitely not be a return customer. read more

DO NOT buy anything online from this store. Last year they only sent me half of my order, I emailed and called numerous times and no answer. I took the loss and moved on. I again made a stupid mistake to order from this shady company and now I didn't receive one single thing. Again they don't answer anything. I just disputed the charge with Citibank. Am I really the first person to write about the Manhattan Oak store? That seems strange! Regardless, this store is right up my alley. When it comes to clothing, I tend to dress like a nerd but secretly aspire to wear the wacky get-ups that other people seem to so effortless pull off as chic. This place has all the makings of my dream wardrobe were I skinny and bold enough to buy them. The space is pretty neat with a strange art installation black mountain in the center and floating racks along the sides. They specialize in newer designers who seem to have a high-fashion hipster (I realize that the word hipster makes its way into about 85% of my reviews, but the movement has become a love/hate thing for me) take on things. For menswear it is a lot of $100 t-shirts, but with interesting details. There is a large array of tanks for summer, including ones with hanging ribbons of fabric or tie-around detailing. The shorts are also awesome, mostly predicting that this season men will be showing some thigh. There are these pull around shorts from a line called Unconditional that are to die for. There are also a pair of pants from Endovenera called cigarette pants which have the Thom Browne influenced floodwater tailoring and a twisting seam. The shoe selection is terrific as well. This place has a really clear vision and I totally appreciate that. I hate stores that are all wishy-washy and you dont really understand what the buyer is going for. Here, you know exactly who the customer is - fashion forward city-slicker with an eye for detail and a ballsy and playful attitude about dressing. The prices aren't astronomical, as most of the lines they carry are newer names, but it isn't cheap either. I think this is the perfect place to buy some key summer pieces to mix up with some funky and fabulous vintage finds to make an excellent statement in the upcoming summer months. read more

Can I give zero stars?! Do NOT order online from this company!!!! I placed an order for a xmas gift with ample time considering there may be longer processing due to the holidays. I received an order complete email then nothing else... after several attempts to email customer service and calling their joke of a call center still nothing. Now today,3 days from xmas and they finally respond to notify me that my order has been canceled. I just wish I would have seen these other reviews before wasting my time. Okay, the styles are beautiful, but I live out of town and the last three times I've ordered from them on the web, they've processed my payment and later cancelled my order due to the item being out of stock. It happened to me twice this week and literally three times in a row. The first time it took them weeks to figure it out and I was waiting on the piece for an event I was attending.
