your average hole in the wall divey irish bar in the city that is cash only. one bartender, one pool table. bartender was super chill. before we got there, there was about 4 people in there. he got to us all and made the drinks pretty strong. jack and coke was like all jack and a drop of coke for coloring. just the way i like it. 18$ for 2 hard ciders and 2 jameson shots. he even allowed us to order pizza and it eat it in there. one downside is the pool table takes up most of the open space so if you are sitting at the bar you may get hit from the stick as they are hitting the ball. read more

Amazing prices, nice selection of hard liquor and beers (Lagunitas for $5!), and walls decorated with a history of the Irish anti-colonial struggle for independence. O'Keeffe's is a great cash-only local bar with friendly staff and patrons and usually is not too crowded. The drinks are well made and well priced, the pool table is respected and kept in good condition, and the music-box is stocked with a good solid mix of music. The staff has always been friendly - when the owner is there or not, the treatment is the same. Spirit selection is good for a small bar. Beer is in bottles and while the list is somewhat small it covers the spectrum of styles, so probably something you will like. Wine? well, it is sort of a "red or white" selection, but this isn't really a wine drinking place. They don't serve food, but they are cool with you bringing in some from one of the places in the area. Just don't make a mess and clean up after yourself. In other words, act as if you are a guest in someone's house. It is pretty small place so when it gets crowded the pool playing can be difficult. But since it is off the of Geary and Clement bar corridor, it doesn't get as crowded as those places. It doesn't have big TV's all over, so another reason the crowds stay a little smaller. When the TV's are on, you will more likely see a Manchester United match being played vs American football. Since it is also far enough away from the Geary/Clement madness, the roving groups of Inner Richmond young drunks that have infested the places over there haven't wreaked their havoc on O'Keeffe's. And if they tried, I have a feeling Annie would kick them out and lock the door. One final note on the Juke-box - and it's not one of the download ones where the bozo in the corner can download 50 crappy songs in a row and pay an extra $5 to keep his on top. It's old school fixed selection and they have a good selection that fits the bar. Another reason this place is one of my favorites to stop in for a beer. read more

You know it's time to go home on St. Patrick's Day when you're at a smoky 95% authentic Irish bar, the live drum and recorder band of Irish children has just finished playing (out on a school night, mind you... belligerents-in-training!!), and the "Irish Car Bomb" is mistakenly referred to as the "Carrish Ier... wait..." Since O'Keeffe's is on the corner opposite end of my block, I've always been curious about it but had never gone in. So I'm glad that tonight, on our way home to my house, Ruchi P. and I took the time to stop by, since I'd heard it was a legit Irish bar and it was March 17th. The abovementioned events occured, in addition to Ruchi and I being the only non-White people in the room... that NEVER happens in San Francisco... I was quite tickled (not literally, thank goodness). After spilling most of my Carrish Ier Bomb on the counter and the guy being totally cool with it, we waved goodbye and called it a night. If it weren't for the smoke and I weren't so scared of European men following me home, I'd definitely come here more often! read more

No truer definition of Dive Bar exists. It wasn't too difficult for us to find parking around this joint. When we walked in we immediately noticed the faint smell of cigarettes that permeated the walls, and of course, a rare site these days - the ash trays on the bar. None of us smoke so we counted ourselves lucky that no one there was smoking while we hung out here. I asked what was on tap and the reply came "Nothing". Apparently everything is bottled or canned. I will drink Guinness out of the can, but not a bottle and canned is what they had. All three of us were poured a Guinness in a slim balloon style Magner's glass. 5.50 a pop. The woman working the counter was simply a doll and wonderful to chat with. She mentioned she was from County Leitrim and we all had a lovely chat. I think she mentioned her name as Annie. If I were a local this would definitely be high on the list of hang out spots. We went on a Monday afternoon, so it was quiet and mellow, much how we tend to prefer it. Don't get me wrong we love live music and the lot, but after a full day of traveling it was nice to relax. I'd love to make it back and see what all the other yelpers are commenting about regarding the night life at this spot. I loved that this place appeared the epitome of a dive bar but had the warm and friendliness to counter the usual negative stigmas that surround dive bar type settings. so the friday night madness continues.... the guys flagged down cabs and we jetted out to O'Keefes for the next round.... Natalie and I had no idea where we were going. As we headed into unchartered territory with our "mantourage", we wondered if we would end up in some dive. Yep, we did. It was a dive, but a good old irish one at that. Now, I'm not irish but 3 of the 5 boys I was with were. The bartender was irish, the patrons were mostly irish (accents and all) and even the jukebox was playing irish music. I was half expecting a leprechaun to pop out somewhere. I totally get the appeal of this bar for the guys. It was dark, a little gritty but homey feeling and the beer was dirt cheap. I'm not sure where along the way I started doing shots of whiskey but this did happen and I'm not proud. It seemed the thing to do at the time and it was hard to say no to those big green eyes peering down at me. I mean, he said a lot of nice things.... I had to drink the whiskey. our delightfully drunk group eventually laughed our way out of there at closing time....walking down the street in search of a cab I loudly proclaimed, "I really hope I get to go back to that place again, it has got to be one of the coolest bars in san francisco". those sexy green eyes peered down on me again. This time he was holding my hand and pulled me towards him. what followed was the most romantic slurred words I had ever heard said in a perfect irish accent: "oh my pretty one, not only will you be coming back to O'Keefes with me, but someday we're going to tell our grandkids how we got engaged here over shots of whiskey. As I wrote in a recent review, I love bar hopping because each individual bar is like it's own little world. Stepping through the door into O'Keeffe's last night was another unique and memorable experience as I was instantly transported to Ireland. I've never been to Ireland, but for me, this place felt so authentic that I felt like I was actually there. Everyone was really friendly and I had so much fun playing everyone on the pool table in the middle of the room. Only 50 cents although in about ten games, I only paid twice. The owner was wonderful, a true delight and she only added to the authentic experience. Great Irish tunes on the jukebox too...was totally feeling it until a song by War came on. Drinks were strong and the prices reasonable. A true Irish bar in the heart of the Richmond...this is the real deal. May it never change and last 100 years. read more

This may well be one of the best kept secrets of the Inner Richmond. It is a little dingy and a lot Irish. I took inventory last night. Everyone was drinking either a Magners (on ice, of course) or a Guinness. But the Guinness came from a can. Everything else came from a bottle. They don't have any of those fancy schmancy things we like to refer to as taps at this bar. What they do have is a sea of Irish people. Yes, this is a true Irish bar. They have pictures of the 10 men who died in that small unpublicized hunger strike you may not have ever heard of (if you were born and raised in a cave on a remote island) taking up an entire wall. At least half of the selections on the jukebox are Irish bands. You have hard time talking to the regulars due to the heavy Irish brogue. You can smoke in the bar, just like in Ireland. They have darts and a pool table. Last night everyone was playing darts so we got the pool table. That last sentence was not very useful. By the end of the night I thought I was in Ireland, but the alcohol may have contributed to that. read more

After finishing dinner at Namu across the street, I wasn't ready to go home. I was on one of the best first dates of my life, so I insisted that we go for one more drink. Low and behold, O'Keefe's! As we stepped through the door we were instantly transported to Ireland. Cigarette smoke wisped around us, patrons had the requisite Guinness in hand, U2 hummed softly over the juke box, and a lonesome dog roamed for scraps. We saddled up at the end of the bar near the faded family photos. After knocking back a shot of Jameson with some rugby boys, Annie the bartender took our order. Two Jack & Gingers. A few hours (and a few more drinks) later it was time to call it a night. I was already half way out the door, my new beau in hot pursuit, as Annie called out, "Oy!" and with a stern finger she pointed at him and said, "BEHAVE." read more

The coolest & quite possibly the only bar south of Geary & east of Presidio Ave. This is a wonderful bar if you're looking to get away from the normal Inner Richmond evening around Clement Street. My first visit to O'Keefe's bar was on St. Patty's Day--one of the worst nights to get a drink around the Irish-pubbed area. We opened the bar doors and immediately were greeted by second-hand smoke (good or bad depending on your preference of tobacco usage). The bar is almost never full, this night being about as close as it would get. On my second visit, I was greeted by the bartender & owner Mr. O'Keefe, who surprisingly greeted me with "Hello, Mate. What'll ya have?" and seemingly recognized me from my visit a week or so before. This time the bar was nearly empty, a few friends and I had our way with the jukebox--a mix of traditional irish tunes as well as classic rock, and some modern day popular stuff. My favorite album on the jukebox was Flogging Molly, which I hardly ever see. The walls behind the bar are tattered with photographs of children, i'm assuming they are the locals' kids who may even be of age by now. There's a pool table if that's your gig & they have 30-year-old comfy yellow chairs you can sit your ass in & relax. Greatest part about the bar is that it's relatively unknown & you can smoke inside...but then again 2 hours of first & second hand smoke start to take it's toll. read more

The atmosphere was great as well as the service! It wasn't too crowded but enough people to feel at home. I visited on the weekend so it made for a great night out. Drinks were nice too. This is a Cork bar, & if I started my description of O'Keefe's as such in 100 different conversations, probably 50 of those folks would assume that by Cork bar, I meant a Wine Bar. Fools! O'Keefe's cares not for aesthetics. They care not for customer service. They care not for convenience in any way, shape or form. Nothing is on tap. They don't have any frou frou cocktails available. There is no top shelf, there is no bottom shelf, there is only Shelf, & said shelf is loaded up with the hard stuff. Whiskey, mostly. They don't take credit cards, & there isn't an ATM in the house or within a few blocks. The jukebox boasts an array of albums chock full of Irish drinking songs, Phil Collins' greatest hits, & Guns N' Roses' "Use Your Illusion 2". The walls are covered with old posters of Irish football squads of yore. There's even a Ross Perot For President hat hanging on one wall. O'Keefe's is the kind of place that falls so short of trying to knock your socks off that they knock your goddamn socks off. So, what I'm trying to say is this: Put your drinkin' hat on (kudos if it involves Michael Dukakis' failed presidential bid in '88), & leave your socks at home. read more

BEST BAR EVER. I live one block away, and this is my favorite place on earth. A certain type of drinker regulars this place and loves it. That is the Irish/Alcoholic kind. Annie (the owner) laughed at my friend who ordered a washington apple, and then said straight up "No." You come to O'Keeffe's and you order a shot and a beer, or maybe a magners on ICE, but that's it. You will feel really stupid if you order a cosmo here, I doubt there is anything even remotely pink in this bar... 6 shots of Jameson 2 beers $18. -- That should be all I need to say about that. So there was a gruff Irish woman at the bar and you could tell that this was a locals hangout. But once we sat down and ordered a couple of shots of Jameson, that seemed to signal that we were okay. There was live music on a Friday night and it was really cool listening to some old Irish music played on some traditional instruments. The locals were nice and willing to strike up a conversation. We tried to buy the band a round of shots but the bartender basically said no, and served them up to the band anyway. I'm thinking that's how they were being paid for their services. Ultimately we had 6 shots of Jameson, 2 beers and the tab came out to $18. That's all you really need to know. Great vibe, we will definitely be back. read more

I have a real love/hate relationship with St. Patrick's Day. I do enjoy drinking the occasional Guinness and, believe it or not, I look pretty awesome in green. Plus, I spent a few years Irish dancing so a full day of hearing fiddles and tin whistles everywhere brings back fond memories (and the urge to bust out a step or two). But the problem is that on St. Patrick's Day every asshole thinks they're an Irish dancer, and nothing raises my blood pressure more than seeing some super drunk college girl hopping around and falling over on her meathead boyfriend while trying to "jig." Thankfully we found O'Keeffe's which, at least while we were there, was free of that kind of tomfoolery. I was able to feel like I was participating in St. Patrick's Day revelry but still drink my cider without having the urge to spill it on someone. I have been going to O'Keeffe's for 27 years. I regularly go to Ireland every year and this bar is the closest I have seen to a real Irish country bar that I have seen in the States. Annie O'Keeffe is a wonderful hostess and a better bartender/owner. You cannot find a bar anywhere in San Francisco that is as authentic as OKeeffes - the rest are "theme" Irish bars. This is a great one and you will have a great time as long as you behave yourself. By the way, they serve generous but simple drinks. Its the clientele and the craic that is so much fun. This place is a classic. I'm not always a fan of the word "dive bar", so let's just say that O'Keefe's has a very homey feel. You can get Guinness in here, but the locals seem to stick to the Bud and the Corona. They have a full bar too. For some reason, most people are not compelled to order a summer squash martini here. There used to be a guy who sat at the end of the bar next to the juke box who would play "Ring of Fire" repeatedly. The guy would be slumped face down on the bar, and Johnny would still be singing "...It burns Burns BURNS, with a ring of Fire, with a ring of fire..." Just a great place to drink with a few friends. Cool. Grungy. Irish. I felt like I was part of some secret society just being in there. And on St. Patrick's Day, at that! It wasn't filled with obnoxious kids wearing green Mardi Gras beads -- it was comfortably full of crusty old diehards. I think an older couple owns the place; a middle-aged woman was buzzing around tending to the middle-aged clientele like a mother hen. She was awesome. And you can smoke in there. Divey. Awesome. AND... at some point in time, you could pay your tab with a check; a sign behind the bar advertises an "$8 charge on returned checks." Though you can't any more (we tried, for kicks). Me and my friends went to O'Keefe's for a nightcap following a nice dinner at Katia's right across the street. Definitely convenient, but what a world of difference from Katia's nice almost "proper" setting. I love, actually prefer, a relaxed pub atmosphere so this was a nice place to finish the night. It was my second time at O'Keefe's so I knew to expect smoke, but even expecting it - I found it too smokey! So much so that Jeff claimed to have had a breath of fresh air by going to the bathroom! The good points of this bar are a very friendly bartender, 7n7s (I seek bubbles for my tummy when I'm feeling too full from a big meal!), and the pool table! I love pool and this bar is small and laid back, which lends itself to friendly games of pool...where I win...of course =) OK, I'll give Adam some credit since he was on my team...but only some, because we all know I was the one who brought it home! Next time Jeff and Katie! I'll probably visit O'Keefe's again if I'm eating on this cute little stretch of restaurants along Balboa Ave. but I wish there was better ventilation. I must say, this bar is pretty legit. I came here a little over a year and a half ago, and have visited a few times since. This is NOT another Abbey or Irelands 32, or any of those Geary/Clement USF bars. Not a chance. So don't be expecting the USF soccer team, or any swoopy-shirt freshmen girls to be there. Who you can expect to be there are a handful of half drunk Irishmen, talking shit about each other and patting each other's back. They look mean, but they have hearts of gold. This is the kind of place that you would find in South Boston -- or Cork. The authenticity, cheap (and no-nonsense) drinks, the good people, and the amazing Irish drinking songs (on their jukebox) are all reasons why I would give this 5 stars. I knock off a star because the place is very smokey, and leaves your clothes all smelly. O'Keeffes, 4 stars for you. read more

It was a monday night, with four locals who each had their own ass grooves in the WOODEN bar stools. not a threat whatsover! 2.the accents were so cockney that my cochleas were doing somersaults in the twilight. 3. the posters date pre-1990 for teams that have never had members visit outside of their hometown. 4. my seltzer water was provided by the good folks at the shasta soda co., directly from the source baby ( who knows how long the bottle had been open) No tap to speak of. the bartender was apparently a rabid exibitionist, not flinching a bit pouring a .39 cent 3 liter of stockpiled bubbly swill into my wonderfully biting three dollar frontal lobe missle. I kept drinking to decimate the "american werewolf in london" intro-vibe (had to remove my puffy red parka in order to level my grumbling paranoia. sidenote: i dont own a puffy red parka.)
