When we expressed an interest in having dinner at a place where we could also see fado performed, a local guide suggested O Fado, and called to reserve a table for us.
The restaurant sits in a neighborhood approaching the North bank (ribeira) of the Douro, about ten minutes' walk from the Praca da Liberdade. Our reserved time set us up at the table across from the performers' space. The restaurant occupies a nicely-decorated room, seating about 35 pretty comfortably.
Our party of three shared a typical "board" (tabua) of local cheeses and cured meats--really tasty. For dinner, we enjoyed the baked sole, one of the two codfish preparations on the menu, and the beef medallions, respectively. We found all three well-seasoned and -prepared, each accompanied with different vegetable combinations. Go hungry, because they serve very generous portions!
We also enjoyed the restaurant's "Vertigo" dessert special, offering a tower composed of separate glass bowls filled with melted chocolate, whipped cream, and assorted sliced fruit as a kind of fondue.
The evening's entertainment featured very talented instrumentalists playing guitarra do fado and viola, respectively. One female and one male sang in alternating sets of around fifteen minutes, presenting fados from both Lisbon and Porto. Especially considering that we visited this modestly-sized venue on a weeknight, O Fado put-on some very solid talent for their guests.
Appetizers, entrees, dessert, one aperitif, one glass of wine with dinner, some lovely tawny port after dinner, along with the fado performance ran us about €180.
But we couldn't finish the review without special thanks to the two young men who very attentively waited on us and all the other guests, speaking in Portuguese as well as very good Spanish and English. One of our party flagged as the evening grew late, and they very kindly called us a cab, waiting outside with us until it arrived.
If you want an evening of exemplary Portuguese hospitality, food, and music, O Fado will mark a highlight of your trip. And when you go, don't forget to tip the waitstaff, who will have earned it! read more
