Ginginha is a Portuguese liqueur made by infusing ginja (sour cherries) berries in alcohol and combining it with sugar and spices, such as cloves and cinnamon sticks. The sour cherry has soaked up all the flavor, so save it for last.

After our wine tasting I decided to have another taste of red from the Douro region (no, it doesn't really pair well with what I had, but I don't care). It's a crappy photo, but we had an appetizer plate (they're sneaky-they bring it to you THEN tell you if you don't want it they can take it away...we kept it). Olives (for Wifey) and a tuna mixture that didn't seem to have much more than olive oil and finely chopped onions - and it came with some Portuguese bread - I loved it. For our main meals, Wifey had a "fish rice" meal and I had a baked cod dish with potatoes and spinach that had enough garlic on it to keep the vampires away for the rest of the trip. We finished with a chocolate mouse that was nothing like anything I ever had. It was more like a thick frosting...so rich and chocolaty...so good... I'll admit it, the service was a bit uneven (one of the waiters didn't speak Portuguese or English) but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. We went there 3 times this past month. The first time we ordered the grilled chouriço (chouriço assado) as an appetizer followed by the steak and fries which, in Lisbon, is always served with a fried egg on top and super creamy and well prepared prawn lime risotto. We only ordered the baked cod (bacalhau à braz) and garlic shrimp the second time around. I've never had a more delicious garlic sauce than what was on that shrimp! Finally, on our last day in my hometown, we ordered the steak and fries and the octopus rice. The latter is served in a clay pot and I swear it's one of the most amazing seafood dishes I've ever had. The octopus was tender and delicious. According to Portuguese culinary tradition, they have a small menu because they know they can make these dishes well. The prices are competitive, the ambiance is quaint. The word "solar" roughly translates to manor. Go there, get the food, tip well.

Oh my goodness what a cute place this is…read more Located on the lobby of the Browns Hotel in Lisbon, Brown's Braserie was the perfect place to have breakfast on a cold and beautiful morning at Lisbon on November 2019. You sit down on their table and you can see from the windows the beautiful tiles on all the buildings in Lisbon because this place has a wonderful location. As far as the food, it was amazing, with a huge variety of pastries, breads, Portuguese charcuterie ham and cheese from all over in Lisbon, fresh juices, and hot coffee from them amazing coffee machine and here you can get any type of coffee from espresso, cappuccino, or simple Americano. They also served hot food like eggs and bacon and other typical food that you eat in Portugal everything was great because I tried it all. The service was outstanding and the place was clean and exquisitely decorated. The music from the 30s was playing the whole time. Thank you and I can't wait to go back.

Cana Verde is situated in what used to be the sailor and fisherman market district and while many of us (locals and tourists alike) opted to have a sit down lunch, there were many workers who popped in for a bite or coffee quickly at the counter. Very legit. Since sardines are what Portugal is all about, I ventured a try and ordered the Sardinhas Assadas (grilled sardines). These were served whole, brilliantly seasoned with potatoes, salad, oil & vinegar and fresh bread. These were big' ol sardines, about 6-8 inches long. They were piping hot. Since they were cooked and served whole, all manner of fish guts spilled out and I just tried really hard to think that I was getting my Omega 3's while scooping up the fish bits. The richness/oiliness/flavor of the dish was quite intense, and I really had to try to make it through three of the four sardines. Luckily, the half-bottle of vinho verde I ordered made it easier to wash down the fishes. I chose this restaurant because when I passed by I could see chickens roasting in one window, and a group dining robustly with mountains of plates of fishbones. I knew I would regret it if I didn't go in. Glad I did, glad I tried the sardines, but to be 100% honest, I wish I tried the chicken..the other house specialty. Will never forget this experience!

Inside was classically decorated with many square tables that could be rearranged for groups of 1-2 or larger. We did not need a reservation but it was a Tuesday night at 8pm. Service was friendly but could felt similar to the service you get in many tourist restaurants and the idea of American tipping seems to be taking root. Food portions were hearty and seemed to be a more formal take on Portuguese comfort food (I imagine). The Cod Duque was under seasoned with the Octopus done well and the sweet potato puree was just....there.
