During my trip to southern Europe, this was where Yelp truly let me down. The restaurant had only 10 reviews, but they were decent, and it was close to our hotel, so we decided to give it a try. When we walked in, we were the only customers--and we were still the only ones there when we left nearly two hours later. That should've been a red flag: no tourists, no locals, just us.
We ordered Francesinha and a couple of other dishes but ended up canceling one of the Francesinha because it's so heavy (when we were ordering other stuff, not during the meal, to be clear). However, the waiter brought everything out anyway, including the one we had canceled. He was polite, and we didn't want to make a fuss, so we told him not to worry about it and kept the dish.
The meal itself was disappointing. Francesinha is naturally heavy, but this one was also overwhelmingly salty. The pork Francesinha was so salty it was nearly inedible. I couldn't help but worry about my blood pressure after eating it--even though I don't have issues with that normally. Still, we tried our best to make the most of the experience.
The final straw came when we were paying. The restaurant charged us for the fries that came with the Francesinha. We hadn't ordered them and assumed they were included. They even charged for the fries served with the canceled Francesinha. What would have happened if we'd said, "No, we don't want fries" when they were brought out? Toss them? Serve them to someone else the next day?
This was our last meal in Porto, and it left a bitter taste--not just from the food but from the overall experience. It's a shame because Porto is a beautiful city, but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone--unless you're on a diet that requires excessive salt intake. read more
