Have had closed signs on them and cones out everywhere... It's terrible. This rest stop has clean restrooms, picnic tables, plenty of parking and a pet area so you can relieve yourself as well as your animals. There are also stocked vending machines if you need a snack. Please please please leave these spaces open for travelers who desperately need them! Rest stops save lives!

Yes, the Lakehead Rest Area (southbound) was closed when I was here. Thankfully, I was ready for disappointment. I was able to see through the trees and the O'Brien Rest Area (northbound) was open with vehicles in there. I drove to the next exit, turned north and was there in 15 minutes. The sign says no overnight parking but also states 8-hour parking limit so was a bit confusing. We decided to take our chances and parked on the truck side in a designated RV parking site and stayed the night. Tons of semis with running generators which was drowned out by the highway noise. Both were easily cancelled with earplugs. But look, we just needed a place to crash to get off the road and avoid driver fatigue. For that we much appreciated the opportunity. Bathrooms are clean. It felt safe. Also, an amazing sunrise and views of Mt Shasta. All and all, for a free night to "camp" we will probably use these rest areas for overnight stays again.

I'm glad that California is again maintaining roadside rest stops the way we all desire a pit stop to be. California is a LARGE state! Some people are driving a LONG ways! Roadside rest stops provide a service to everyone--not just those who need to pee--by keeping our roads safe from sleepy drivers, clean from roadside poopers, and just a nice place to relax and view a small piece of this great and varied state. Some gems like this rest stop are innately endowed with the additional virtue of grand views! Clean bathrooms, family bathrooms, picnic tables dispersed throughout, informative displays, seemingly working payphone, garbage cans and recycle cans, AMAZING vistas of the mountains above and the canyon below! It is very well maintained from the grass, to the cleanliness of the restrooms, to the garbage being emptied on a regular basis. It feels safe to a woman traveling alone and I have even been known to rest my eyes here for a bit on long drives because it feels comfortable to do that here. There are lots of friendly seagulls that are obviously used to being fed by visitors and clean tables with some shade if you want to enjoy a bite to eat or just sit and relax outside a bit. I like the way the trucks are separate from the cars so you don't have to listen to the noise from the engines or deal with the smells. There is also a well maintained pet relief area here as well. If you need the restroom or just a respite, this is a good place.

As two female friends travelling together we would have enjoyed the following additions to make our stay perfect: both beds made up as doubles (we are friends, not partners), a black out curtain in both rooms to prevent the street light outside shining on us all night, a clothes rack or clothes line and another mirror outside of the bathroom. Quaint, cozy and oh so comfortable, we enjoyed our cottage so much we could hardly leave to go sight seeing! (Of course we did tho!). The cottage was fresh and clean, furnished with everything one would need in a vacation rental and pleasantly decorated without being overdone. We absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it!! The hotel employee checked a second room before we went to it and found that it too was dirty. The third room was room #101, it was cleaner, so, we stayed. At 4:45am, I awoke to banging and clanging on the wall behind the bed. Turns out room 101 is next to the kitchen. Staff arrives after 4:30am and starts preparing breakfast. They are manipulating large stainless steel warming trays on metal countertops, opening and slamming the oven doors and refrigerator. When I went to complain at the front desk, the man who would not give me his name, was not apologetic. He said he couldn't call his manager because they were sleeping. Staff had to have known that room 101 has this predawn noise issue...Truely a design flaw. But they don't care! Throughout the process with the hotel staff, there was never an apology nor an explanation of the poor conditions. While waiting at the front desk, I noticed the lobby the furniture is dirty and the hall carpets have big stains. Find another place to stay.
