Beware of false representation of a licensed contractor!…read more We hired Down 2 Earth Landscaping for a large backyard project involving concrete coating, gravel, rock installation, stepping stones, and other exterior work. The experience was one of the most stressful and unprofessional contractor experiences we have ever had. Most importantly: as of today, we were unable to locate any active Arizona Registrar of Contractors license for this business or the individual representing himself as the contractor, despite repeated searches and direct verification attempts with the Arizona ROC. We repeatedly asked for proof of licensing and did not receive it. Consumers should verify licensing for themselves before signing anything or paying deposits. We will certainly verify in the future.  The problems throughout this project were extensive: * Concrete coating developed cloudy white discoloration after rain shortly after application * Finish appearance did not match what was discussed or expected * High-gloss sealer was used despite our request for matte * Concrete splatter and dents were left on painted stucco walls * Outdoor faucet hardware was damaged during the project * Rock color installed was dramatically different from what we requested * Multiple corrections and redirects were needed due to poor communication and lack of oversight * We were charged while still dealing with unresolved workmanship concerns * Communication became defensive, dismissive, and at times openly disrespectful when concerns were raised Rather than taking accountability, the response was largely blame-shifting and gaslighting. Concerns were minimized instead of professionally addressed, and we were made to feel like the problem for asking for basic quality and clarity on a very expensive project. Homeowners: please do your homework, verify licensing independently through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, and proceed with extreme caution.

While their concept…read morefor creating more sustainable landscapes is lovely, the outcome of the work we hired them to do could left a lot to be desired and a decent hole in our pocket book. They contract almost all heavy lifting machinery out, which made our fairly simple project very expensive. The plants they brought with them were all very small and within the 90 days several grasses had to be replaced. There are so many glowing reviews here on Yelp, perhaps we did not get the full experience of working with them since the actual landscape design was done by the architects. So, I might not rule them out if you're looking for a full rain harvesting set-up.

I went with another company and they are saying I have to pay them this no show fee. Go somewhere else with more direct and straightforward communication/policies.

From the consultation to finishing the job, the whole crew were wonderful. We received 3 independent quotes and Made in the Shade stood out for many reasons. Their partnership with the Tucson Zoo to take African Sumac branches to feeding the animals, their polite nature, their wealth of information, and patience while answering my many, many questions. Every single member of their crew involved in the job were polite, wonderful, and had a great sense of humor. They were incredibly thoughtful in their work, being respectful of our home, and went above and beyond with taking care to work around our grumpy desert tortoise. They removed a large palm tree, a stubborn olive tree stump, an African sumac, and a cypress. These trees were either dying, causing damage to retaining walls, or potential threats if fallen over in a storm. After the crew came out it doesn't even look like any of these plants were there. We will be referring and working with Made in the Shade in the future. (Photos to follow)
