I had already sent a child and gone myself to appointments (annual for the child with glasses, my following up on a now long term concussion) and insurance covered those appointments. I had no reason to believe that annual, regular (preventative) exams would not be covered. (I had believed that it would be part of our medical, not having used this under our current insurance before -- our plan with Kaiser included annual optometrist checks -- and Dr. Nunn was listed as an in network medical provider on the insurance page with no notations for how that would be covered despite my being logged in AND we had met our family out of pocket maximum). They have paperwork with a variety of clauses but it was verbally altered to include that the regular exam may not have inclusion of all the tests they use. I figured even $50 for additional testing they believe necessary might be okay since I otherwise should have no liability. In addition, when I walked in for the first set of appointments (2 children each date, one week apart), I was told they couldn't confirm my insurance so I actually called member services, confirmed they were in network and that the standard exam should be covered -- I noted what it was for and my expectations -- and then put the receptionist in touch with the insurance company. (Did I mention I sent the insurance information to them ahead of the appointments?) Fast forward 3 weeks and I get a bill for over $500 for the first 2 appointments. Now, here is the problem: The receptionists did not have the knowledge to answer my insurance coverage questions, and instead just rushed me to add my initials to the several disclaimers on their paperwork. When I asked about the refraction exam disclaimer (which notes that some insurances do not cover it) , they simply said "that might not be covered." (I took that specific risk but the clause that insurance may not cover standard exam seemed extraneous based on the phone call to member services and sending the info along to reception.) As I continued to fill the paperwork, I did everything, and then proceeded with the routine exams. The exams seemed fine, Dr. Nunn seemed mostly good (she had missed something on my exam but a specialist caught it so maybe it was just an unusual catch for low level reading glasses adjustment -- huge for my concussion related migraines but not necessarily super regular need). Now, however, her billing representative told me that since there are so many insurance plans they can't possibly know ahead of time if there is coverage. This ignores that they had previously billed the same insurance for myself and one of my other children (prior to our meeting our deductible and out of pocket max) and they had those accounts to guide at least some knowledge of the plan.They also have an electronic system to connect to my insurer and could have checked before the day of service. I have now paid over $1000 for four appointments. Her biller left me a message that if there were symptoms like headaches, that could change the insurance coverage. First, one of my kids did note that several times so they didn't make proper notes that day and second, this seems to be asking me to note symptoms after the fact to deal with their incompetence with the insurance (and someone less scrupulous may have made something up and participated in insurance fraud).The total bill was over $200 more, by the way, than the private pay cost that I was offered (at the same time I was asked about symptoms in a voicemail that I have retained) which was revoked with no notice.  The office may look fancy but their billing and record keeping practices (in my experience) are a real question.

Because of this question, which was unsolicited, my medical insurance was billed in addition to vision. When I questioned the charge, the billing manager told me that I must have forgotten the conversation because they always communicate things like that very clearly. The only thing communicated was that I should continue doing what I'm already doing. Before this conversation I even made a point of saying I didn't want one of their services - something to do with a picture of my eyes for health - because it wasn't covered under vision insurance. I'm disgusted with the experience and feel like I've been scammed! There's nothing routine about a routine exam from Front Range Eye Associate!

However, I was caught off guard at the end when I was told there was a $100 fee for the contact lens fitting that no one mentioned when I booked. I specifically asked about Medicaid coverage and extra fees ahead of time, and nothing was said. Because I wasn't prepared for that charge, they wouldn't release my contact prescription. On top of that, the front desk woman, Barbara, was rude and dismissive when I questioned it. It's a shame because the doctor truly was great, but the poor communication and bad attitude at checkout ruined an otherwise good visit. Make sure you double-check all costs before going in.

Stopped in on Monday, now being told they will be in on Tuesday! As a 1st time customer they are making really difficult to trust what they say & the process! After looking at reviews of optometrists in the area I contacted Eyecare Center and explained my situation, without hesitation or any attitude (I run into that more and more these days), the office had me come right over. I saw Dr. Dupuis, he was great.. professional yet personable, and witty without the use of tired, corny eye jokes my eye doc back home uses. I originally had just planned to just buy a pair of replacement contacts, but Dr. Eric took the time to check my contact lens prescription to ensure it was still accurate...it wasn't. He gave me an emergency pair of contacts with my updated prescription. Their pricing on lenses was less than what my eye doc back home charges so I ended up ordering more through Eyecare Center to have mailed back to my home. The only negative is the fact they're located in Boulder and not where I live, otherwise I'd be switching to Eyecare Center & Dr. Eric for my eyecare needs. Tucked away on Hecla, the Harris docs are youthful, highly competent, and experienced professionals who are enthusiastic about eye care. And they don't miss a beat. It is a breath of fresh air coming from being treated like a number, as a case study for a clumsy intern, or from a jaded doc who barely says a word to educate you, or with whom you must ask 20-questions, before sending you out the door with a big bill. They are collaborative, straightforward, and want you to know what's going on with your eyes, what they will be monitoring, and how your family history may affect you. No surprises. Their bedside is excellent. Additionally, they have paired up with excellent craftsman-opticians to hand-cut, assemble, and adjust your eyewear to custom fit you via their in-house lab. Seth took care of me. He is a master optician and a consummate yet down-to-earth professional who knows his trade. So, you can say goodbye to cheap eyeglasses arriving surreptitiously on your doorstep from the internet. They might do for backups -- but once you've worn eyewear crafted here by these folks, you won't want to go back. I discovered that they do a lot of local outreach and are in touch with both the needs and resources of the community. I hit a rough patch, and they were willing to work with me to restore my vision. You simply can't find that level of care and compassion at a corporate chain like Costco or Pearl Vision, where you're treated as just another customer. Nor at high-turnover practices where providers constantly change or the focus is on volume over care (such as I found at Boulder Eye Surgeons). If you ask me, this level of care and attention is what's needed to balance our backwards healthcare system that treats eyes as luxury organs (and teeth as luxury bones). All that is left to say is that this office and all its staff are quality, hardworking folks who care about doing a good job and genuinely appreciate the people and community they serve. They do not skimp on patient care and satisfaction, no matter your condition.
