Went here to see Theo Parrish and it was a vibe for sure! Didn't expect the space to be so big and really love that they don't want you to be on your phone when on the dance floor. Also keep conversations out in the backyard, which is huge by the way. Staff was very friendly, but food and drinks were a bit pricey. They do have great options for drinks and the indoor Mexican restaurant was great too. Event was sold out but they always sell tickets at the door. Just be sure to get there a few minutes early. read more

My friends and I showed up on 7/25 to see Wata Igarashi--tickets in hand, good vibes ready. We chose Nowadays specifically because it's supposed to be an inclusive, welcoming venue. Turns out that inclusivity ends at the door. We were a big group, excited for the night. Enter: the "manager" (quotation marks doing a lot of work here, because actual management requires basic competence and professionalism). They ask who we're there to see. One friend answers--cool, right? Apparently not. That answer was treated like some kind of secret password, and suddenly only she is "allowed" in while the rest of us get told to leave. No explanation. Just a smug, dismissive wave like we were trying to sneak into a VIP party we paid to attend. I speak up and ask why our friend couldn't answer on our behalf. The manager replies, "Well, I would never allow someone else to speak for me." I respond "Well I have absolutely no problem with that." They have no comeback, of course. Just silence... followed by the now-predictable, dramatic "you can leave now," like we were uninvited extras on their personal power trip. Let's connect the painfully obvious dots here: packed house, pre-paid tickets, and a "manager" mysteriously filtering out groups at the door. Couldn't possibly be because they wanted to resell those spots at surge pricing, right? No, definitely not that. Just your classic, scummy, dishonest, and probably illegal move disguised as "door policy." Also--since when is knowing the DJ a requirement for entry? God forbid people discover new music without passing a pop quiz on Wata Igarashi's discography. This isn't some exclusive Midtown nightclub with a velvet rope and bottle service. Good place to go specially during summer on "Summer Sunday's" their afternoon party. This year they are extending the event until the last weekend of October. I've been three times and I really like the ambiance in here. Is chill, please really go to enjoy the music and dance, and drinks are well made at a reasonable price. The only part that I think could improve is that their food offer is usually very limited and overpriced, so if you go make sure to eat something before arriving, and the bar always lack inventory of their beers, so their selection is not as wide as it shows the menu, I've been three times this summer and they never have what I ordered (multiple beers on different days) so I have to get something else. Other than that I really like their "respect and tolerance" policies, the crowd is usually very nice and not conflictive, I've never seen a fight or bad attitude from the guests. I would definitely recommend going, enjoying good music and having a good time. I've never been during their night events but they seem to have a very good DJ selection as well. read more

I didn't visit as a guest, but my friend had been missing since the night before and we thought he might have ended up at Nowadays. We went to go check and at this point I had been freaking out and sobbing not knowing what to do and I probably looked insane when I got to the door..despite this I was treated with kindness and I want to, from the bottom of my heart, thank the lovely person who was working the door. I didn't get their name (I was panicking) but they walked around with me inside to look for my friend and they even helped me look in the bathrooms, which I wouldn't have thought to do myself. The kindness that was shown to me in my moment of need was so so appreciated and even though my friend wasn't there, the person at the door told me of another event happening nearby to check. We ended up locating my friend and everything is okay, but I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. And for anyone thinking of going, for the brief 3 minute period that I was inside it seemed as if a lovely place filled with happy people. If you do go, be kind to the staff!!!!!! read more

Had a very unfortunate experience with line staff for a ticketed Pride event and will not be recommending this venue or returning in the future. After following the hostile staff's directions, we were told that we were mocking security when we commented amongst ourselves on the intensity of their tone when instructing us to "stay behind the blue line" (which we did). Our larger group was split up as 4 of us were denied entry, and we were promised immediate refunds which we were not given. Five bites into the fried chicken sandwich it was clear they didn't know what the heck they were doing in the kitchen. The chicken was crispy on the outside and raw in the middle. Clear sign they don't know to fry chicken and heat was probably too high. Frankly, I am concerned about the food safety for the food truck cause it shouldn't be that pink like never. I remember a time when beer wasn't as crafty and food wasn't as tasty and the outdoors weren't as enjoyable...okay, I really don't. Nowadays is all I've got to go on. What I mean is today, those aforementioned points are great. I also am (badly) referencing the Borough bar hangout of the same clever title. My buddy and I visited Nowadays a few weekends back and had a quality time, for the most part. Let's get into it. When arriving at this Queens destination, you'll be greeted with two places to chill: inside and outside. I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't excited to check out the exterior section, but I'd also be completely full of it if I didn't mention the reason we were even there was because I wanted to partake in Evil Twin NYC brews. The longtime gypsy brewery finally has a home in the land of Queens (and is currently building their tap room). In the meantime, you can sample their spectacular suds via tasters and pints within the interior bar of Nowadays...that is if there isn't a private event closing off this section that wasn't posted on either social media outlet...yeah, I was a little saucy in that statement knowing we trekked all the way there to only be able to experience half the place (and one Evil Twin brew), but we made the best of it. That snafu aside, Nowadays (of the outside variety) has an awesome setup with a bar, food truck, a couple games, and plenty of places to chill out in a rather green setting (i.e. amongst the trees). I noted the row of bug sprays available on the side of the bar which led me to think the dog days of summer might bring plenty of pests, but at least they're aware of this. They should also be aware of their little signs that reserve tables for certain parties and how some spots were missing them (the reason why my buddy and I took a seat). We had no problem getting up from a table that was apparently reserved, but ya gotta be more on top of that. Okay, I promise, besides those little tidbits of annoyance, I did enjoy Nowadays. That bar? A great selection of local brews (Other Half, KCBC, Interboro, Finback) that could honestly put a lot of locations to shame. The food truck? Some tasty-sounding selections along with another little area for pulled pork and hot dogs. I partook in one of those wieners, though this wasn't your average sausage. A casino dog was its name and peppers, potato, and a spicy-ish mustard was its game. Superbly delicious and somewhat worth the $10 price. No live music could be heard on that warm mid-May evening, but there was a schedule of upcoming summer events that could lead back band lovers to jam out when the weather turns nicer (as it has). Perhaps that'll include me? Time will tell... Overall, Nowadays started off on a disappointing note or two, but made up for it with a unique setup and plenty of tastiness (between food and drink) to warrant a return trip. I land somewhere around 3 1/2 stars on this experience, though I'll round up knowing I missed out on the interior of the place and what I'm tentatively sure would've raised things to four. Hopefully I get back soon, because nowadays, there's just so many other spots to check out. read more

My son took me here 6/21 and I had a great time but this past Saturday 5/20 my son had his wedding reception here. I was skeptical but he and his fiancée have a special bond here. It's the kind of place I want to give a one start review to, or a five star review to, I can't tell. First off, the daytime summer parties and hang outs are always great. Good people, good music, ok drinks. As a night party venue though, it's more complicated. When they opened, it was pretty awesome. A queer leaning, techno space, with a cool crowd, fun parties, and a 0 tolerance policy for creeps, that was strongly enforced. The word got out it was a cool place, and the crowd quickly changed over to the burner-adjacent Williamsburg crowd. The place became overrun with bros. You also started seeing more and more of the seedy afterhours people lurking about and pushing drugs. The Queer friendly policies were still in place, but the venue no longer was catering to who it claimed to be for. The place started giving pretentious vibes. It felt like it was trying to become the next Boiler Room. Covid gave this place a reset, and now I've been back a few time, and it's been hit or miss. But, better overall. They seem to be booking more queer and community focused shows, which is a good thing. The place seems to be in an identity crisis though, and it can't decide if it wants to be more of a DYI community space like it began as, or if it still wants and try to be the next destination techno club. I hope they realized the smaller community parties is what original made this place good. read more

Great outdoor place for a small or large get together. Didn't feel crowded but it helped that I had a reservation (cost $5 per person). There are fire pits available but I would not recommend since smoke or fire just flies into your face when the wind picks up. Firepit reservations cost more per person. There are QR codes on the table so its super easy to pull up the menu. I ordered drinks and food at the bar myself. Cocktails start at $11 and there are pitchers available for some cocktails. Shochu lemon sour tastes exactly the way it sounds. I had the fried chicken sandwich which came with a lot of shredded cabbage. You can feel like it's pre-pandemic times at Nowadays, even with the significantly reduced capacity, reservation only tables, and group size limits. I really only felt comfortable visiting this venue because they seem to be taking social distancing and sanitizing the whole space very seriously. Even their bathrooms felt really safe since it was set up outdoors and they were sanitizing it every half hour. I was able to feel safe and have a great time in their spacious backyard with a small group of friends. I've been wary of dining out because it feels quite literally like throwing caution to the wind if you're mere feet away from the next table but I really couldn't feel safer here. The logistics are straight forward and make sense for the times we're in. Reservations are made online and cost $5 per person, and tables are capped at 10 people. When you arrive you're directed to your numbered picnic bench and have up to two hours to spend there. We were able to stay much longer because no one reserved after us, so we took the opportunity to get lots of bites from their on site food truck all night long. It was on Timeout NY a while ago, and I always planned on checking it out at some point in the summer. It was until fellow Yelper Danesh gave me the invite that I finally willed myself to go to this place on a Saturday afternoon. Located only a few blocks away from Brooklyn in Ridgewood, this place really does have the makings of a great spot to hang out with. Especially if you have a very large party of people. There is tons of outdoor seating available to go with a relatively large indoor space. In terms of getting alcohol, things went very smoothly despite there being a bunch of people around. The lines at the outdoor bar were short. Also, the brew selection is diverse enough to make you think there are options for everyone. I checked out both the food tent and truck, and was really impressed by the options. Notably, I got the last round of brisket at 3 pm (the guy gave us a complimentary rib because he couldn't completely fill our order of brisket) and some very delicious fried plantains from the truck. We also checked out the indoor space where they were projecting the World Cup 2018 Russia vs. Croatia game. Tons of people gathered around the projection, so it was easy to sneak over to the bar and grab drinks there as well. With great staff, alcohol selection, music, space, and food I highly recommend people check them out. I only wish they wouldn't run out of brisket by 3pm! read more

I hate this place, from the mosquitos to the rats and the tasteless food. I do not recommend the outdoor space for nowadays. The staff managing the food truck was very rude and the food was trash!!!!!!! The chicken was tasteless, the fries were stale and cold. It was overall a terrible experience. They should have more food options since it's such a large open space. The location is shady even the Uber driver that dropped me off was concerned. I get it turning a junk yard into a trendy space, but invest in signs or lights so you know you're in the right place. Our group of friends bought tickets to see Wata Igarashi last night, but were refused entry at the door by the manager and a bouncer, rudely and condescendingly, for not seeming to know or like the DJ enough. When asked who we were here to see, one of our group answered, correctly, but the bouncer insisted that everyone should have answered independently. Although I understand that some clubs do "vibe checks", those who wish to do so should not sell tickets ahead of time, as it implies a generally guaranteed spot to ticket holders, barring any unforeseen circumstances or belligerent behavior. As a big group going out in NYC, we had deliberately looked for a good event that we could buy ahead of time and had arranged group transportation. While some of the group knew the DJ and some did not, we are all fans of dance music and are fun and responsible partygoers--and seeing music live is a great way to discover new artists and tastes. Wata Igarashi could have gained some new fans, but instead Nowadays has alienated potential customers. read more

Winter isn't technically backyard season. But Nowadays, has a good handle on getting a crowd going during frigid temperatures. Even when they take the party inside. Can't comment on Nowadays' "Outdoor" events- except, you need to wait a couple more months until warm weather kicks in. As I was also told, you can enjoy Nowadays under the stars- literally. But in this case, 'Indoor' schedule is in full effect and drove down to celebrate the Winter opening to support one of Mr. Man's DJ friends on a Thursday night. 'Now' seems like an old warehouse, transformed and jazzed up so folks can lounge while listening to some beats- love that idea! In short, place was thought out real nicely. Large counter at the bar, Lounge area further back to the left with sofas and tables. At some point, seating area is cleared off to create a dance space. Menu and cocktails seemed really nice on paper. Started with a Vegetarian Bowl that was good and also went for a "side" of $3.00 Salt & Vinegar Chips. With that price tag, I thought I was gonna get some sort of artisanal chips. Puh-lease...Later finding out, those were freaking bagged chips that I could've gotten for 25¢ in a freaking corner Bronx Bodega. Come on!!! I told the busboy to take them back, then mentioned to our so-called Bartender to remove the $3.00 chips-in-a-bag from the bill. Flatbread? It was warm and soft- but the damn thing looked like a freaking bagel. I think the best part of our "meal" was the French Fries- that were crispy and salted nicely. I seriously thought the Menu would gel with this place- but nah. By the way, to keep the tab open for food and drinks, your card stays with them. Cocktails were weak and freaking 1/2 way full of ice- nice ingredients though. The Man got his usual Cosmo which lacked. They didn't know what a 'Lemon Drop' was. After suggesting to the so-called bartender to "Google it", he looked lost in the sauce and questioned it. At that point, I ordered a non-alcoholic beverage that was delicate. But then again, who would mess up a non-alcoholic drink anyway??? Now has a terrific DJ lineup for future events and driving for under an hour, seems fine for next time. But we'll definitely eat elsewhere before we come here. Oh and your card? The so-called Bartender was fumbling around to locate it. I understand it was a "soft opening" but come on...have well-trained, bar staff who know their sh*t. And if I was at a really great Bar/Lounge, none of this would happen and you could bet: (1) The Bartender will hook you up with a drink that'll knock you out 2) That Bartender will definitely not fumble around looking for your card like a maniac and (3) how about you swipe, keep the tab open then return the card to the person?---I'm weird when it comes to sh*t like that. Even after driving for almost an hour to come and bust a groove here...I'd give it a complete 5. Design- 5. Everything else? I.e., food and drinks- 3. VERY disappointing experience over all...here is why The space: Large and underwhelming...a big dirt lot with a few naked mounds of dirt piled up and some hammocks. There was NO ATTEMPT at landscaping.....so it felt like I was in a junk yard or an illegal car scrap lot. There were many flies, ants, and mosquitoes competing for your food or your flesh. The food: Over priced, I got a salad with very dry kale, 4 cherry tomatoes and 4 small pieces of tofu...no real dressing to speak of....I made the mistake of adding "beef" which was mealy, gamey, and undercooked....Total cost 16 dollars. The inside space: When you walk up the steps it smells like dog waste because they keep the trash and standing puddles of wastewater next to the entrance of the bar. Inside the AC was nice. I finally made it to Nowadays! I'm into this place a lot! So happy it's a quick bike tide from home too. This reminded me of the gritty large open patios in Germany. I went last night to see one of my favorite documentaries "The Decline of Western Civilization". Starring icon bands like Black Flag, the Germs, X, Fear and the Bags to name a few. There's a raw historical view of the punk scene in LA during the eighties. It's in every punk rockers repertoire growing up. Almost a punk 101 if you will. This feature was introduced by members of local punk band, HVAC. They spoke of the films influence on the personal level along with the political issues that were prevalent during that time in LA. The space has all types of seating from large picnic tables to grassy knolls and some large wood base areas too. I was being devoured by mosquitoes so the community bug spray at the bar made me very happy. They also had tons of beer on draft. Multiple IPA's to pick from. There's was a also a food truck serving up grilled cheese. The bathrooms were in a portable trailer style. Much nicer than porta potties. They have all kinds of events from huge dj parties, music documentaries and even some classes that also lean to the creative types. This is easily a summer and fall hang out for those in Ridgewood, Bushwick or Bedstuy! read more
