Novecento looks like an old diner from the 90's that updated in early 2000's. They have a good selection of different types of food to quench the hunger of anyone with discerning taste. The waiters have access to English menus, but like other establishments in Milan only have 1 or 2 persons that are fluent enough to converse or understand you, which is not a flaw. In Italy trying to converse in Italian is an interesting experience coming from New York.
After this the restaurant is no longer charming. I was given 2 menus, one in Italian at first then one in English. The waiter quickly tried to pull the Italian menu from my table, but I motioned for it to stay so he left it. I noticed upon initial review the English menu had some additives, and not good ones. The prices were somewhat different as well as the selection of food; maybe the less quality food was given in a simpler setup to Westerners.
When we were discussing food the waiter forgot to mention they charge "all'etto" which i believe means per 1/10 kilogram(On the English menu the price was 5,50 Euro and on the Italian menu the price was 4,50 Euro per 1/10 Kg.). The steak which is an average size T-bone was served at what i thought was 500 gram size as we agreed. I ordered what they call "Risotto Fume," which was a good size accompanied by a tasty steak. The food however was fair overall and pricey. As I contacted an Italian friend to discuss this misstep by the restaurant he explained to me the details, which i would have not know about the weight. As I received my itemized bill - when in Italy always ask for an itemized bill so you may try to match the prices- I noticed it was exceptionally high for water, risotto, and a 1.10 lbs. steak.(I believe the steak to be slightly slighter cooked or uncooked)
The night was coming to an end and multiple people received their checks as well, and being the American I already knew disputing my check was going to be a slight issue. Initially the charge of the bill was (all in euros)
9,50 Risotto
27,00 Steak
2,50 vegatbles
2,50 water & lemon
According to the menu if it was a 500gram/1.10 lbs steak i would be at around 22,50 euro. The dispute of mine was followed by 3 other Italian natives disputing their receipt also, which is not commonplace. However i think the manager knew he'd been caught by a few patrons and readily dropped the bill to 35,00 euro. All in all beware of Italian restaurants and dodgy waiters. read more
