Thanks Yelpies for the nice photos. We opted to sit at the patio by the street. They made it little better by putting a facade between the street and the sidewalk. No smokers but that didn't last long. In Italy, outside seating means someone will be smoking next to you. Guaranteed. When we got here, thr waiter started shaking his head when I said no reservation. After conferring with another waiter, we got seated and things started rolling. Bread was brought out and asked for bottled water. To my surprise, cuperto was free and Pellagrino was only €3.50 Chilled vino bianco was delicious with the two items we shared. I got the grilled octopus served on top of the mashed potatoes. (POLPO CROCCANTE Purè, pomodorini semi dry, paté di olive nere) It was a large serving and grilled to perfection. The fish soup (ZUPPA DI PESCE Pomodoro, calamari, polipetti, seppie, gamberi, cozze, vongole, crostini di pane) had flavor that I wasn't use to. Salty, thick soup base? Definitely better to dip with scarpetta. Wasn't happy that one clam and one mussels didn't open up. Our waiter were on top of everything till we were ready to go. Guy next to us rolled a cigarette and started smoking and I was ready to roll out of there. Took while to get the bill after repeatedly asking for it. Overall, we only scratched the surface and love to come back and spend exploring other items like raw fish platers. Inside!

The restaurant is on a side street near the busy (with tourists from every corner of the globe) Duomo area. It is easy to find. It has a charming decor (though it is a bit darker and more romantically appointed than other area restaurants, as well as having an underground and almost bordello vibe). It is also larger than it might appear, as there are both ground floor, as well as a lower eating area seemingly for larger groups, as well as used during busier times. We have only eaten on the ground floor level. The menu offers ample variety, but is not what one would term extensive. It tends upscale, though not extremely costly (arguably average to slightly above average fine restaurant prices), but portions are on the smaller side. They have a specialty in dishes augmented and emphasizing the use of truffles, of which we have sampled several times. Over the course of our several meals we've had every pasta and risotto offered with truffle shavings. Of the appetizers we can recommend the meatballs, which are delicate and small, the bacon wrapped shrimp, and the octopus. Their desserts are also not the run of the mill and warrant tastings. All and all, we will always repeat here when in Milan. Frankly, though their Yelp average score is pretty good, we were surprised they do not have a higher Yelp average score.

But it was a few blocks from our AirBNB, it looked lovely, and we were hungry. To our surprise there was an available table. You can study restaurant reviews all you want, but sometimes you just have the good fortune to wander into a wonderful restaurant. And that was exactly our experiences at Al Mercante. We ate on the beautiful terrace which faces the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art museum. The small piazza where Al Mercante is located was very quiet at night. The interior of Al Mercante is quite elegant. While the majority of the clientele were foreigners, there was small wedding party a couple of tables over. We had the very good fortune to be waited on by Angelo, a professional waiter who loves his job (23 years at Al Mercante!) and who ensured that we had a fine dining experience. Angelo speaks beautiful Spanish and we were able to have a more complete discussion than usual about the menu. I've managed to forget the details of the wonderful food we ate so I hope I. don't commit any serious omissions as I reconstruct our meal. We had an appetizer which I cannot recall. I think it was some sort of raw fish (crudo sounds better) with just a hint of citrus almost like an Italian version of ceviche. Our primo (shared) was wonderful: porcini mushrooms on roasted potatoes. What great taste from two simple ingredients. The secondo (also shared) was salmon coated in sliced almonds and a wonderful lemony sauce. Quite simply it was perfect. We had a terrific white wine that might have been a vermentino. Angelo didn't have biscotti with vino santo so he suggested sbrisolona -- another kind of dessert biscuit. -- that seemed to be homemade -- and a digestivo. In between all of this were wonderful amuse bouche. Here's what I'd like you to know: this was a wonderful, elegant meal served by a very professional waiter in beautiful surroundings. The seafood was all cubed up into small pieces and the sauce was exquisite. We also ordered a pasta with mussels and that didn't disappoint either. The round of Aperol spritzes was also amazing but they offer a lot of wine as well (which probably would've paired equally well with the pasta, but my heart was set on Aperol spritzes for my Italy vacation). Service was good - bathrooms were clean but tiny and could be better in my opinion. You also have to pay upstairs at the register rather than at your table. We loved everything we ordered. Seafood pasta was great. We can't wait to come back! UPDATE: We went back the very next night because we wanted to try their other dishes. We are so glad that we did. My husband got the Scampi dish which is nothing like scampi in the usa which is basically oil and garlic. This italian scampi dish was tomato-based but with a very light cream. You almost could miss the cream if you're not paying attention. It was filled with prawns. The touch of cream gave the dish an incredible savory mouth feel. We liked this even more than the seafood pasta which was also delicious. After several days of eating seafood pasta throughout Italy. I wanted to try something simple and classic. I went with their ragu pasta (bolognese) which was only 10 euros. It was a large plate and hands down, THE BEST, ragu I have ever had in my entire life. This is a MUST EAT. We also shared all the dishes and agree that the ragu was amazing. Nothing was overly salted or greasy. Everything tasted just right. We did order one grilled seafood dish that we did not care for. It was topped with some sort of bread crumb. You tasted the bread crumb more than the seafood. I'd skip that appetizer. If I had to recommend the top 3 dishes, it would be the scampi, ragu and the seafood pasta. The milanese veal cutlet was also nicely done. I had one other dish which was some sort of fish in a tomato sauce with olives and potatoes. There's just something so special about european potatoes. They taste very potato-y a nd not bland. Definitely try one of their stewed potato dishes. The prices are super reasonable, the service is attentive and you'll be surrounded by local italians enjoying life and food.
