For the last five years we have been trying to get "one more year" out of the roof. When the vendor who cleans our gutters said we had a roofing section down to bare wood we became mobilized. On December 26th, using Google reviews, we called the first roofer presenting, Pinnacle Exteriors, (they had 20 five-star reviews and was from the neighboring town) Chris was over within about two hours that same day, had taken photos and was able to show us where the issues existed. We considered other roofers, some even recommended by close friends, but Chris stood out with his no nonsense, can do, we can fit it in during a break in the weather over the next two weeks, approach. Other roofers didn't seem to want the job. Chris considers this time of year in many ways optimal to be installing a roof. When a clear weather day approached with a 40 degrees forecast, Chris let me know that was the day. On Jan 23, 2024, a crew of nine arrived and completed both house and garage roof replacements in one day (7:30 am to 5:00 pm). Chris and his entire crew are very professional, knowledgeable and very easy to communicate with. They are real craftsmen taking extra care in all their work. Even repairing some issues with our chimneys and gutters. Chris and his son Nick went into the attic and covered everything and then cleaned up after. They did a thorough clean up and also used a large rolling magnet to pick up all the nails. Chris came back the next day after the dumpster was removed to again do a magnet sweep of the driveway. This company is very detail oriented. We were extremely pleased with the result and the look of the roofs. Did you know, Chris is also a great carpenter! This year he was back for another big job and some smaller yet tedious jobs. We had him repair and cover all the exposed (and some rotted) exterior wood on our entire 1920 house. That included the wood window trim, soffits and trim around all the doors. It was a big job as we have a large multi family house. He replaced the house numbers, and also did some paint touch up. We also decided to have him replace four outside storm doors which also meant rewiring the doorbells or installing wireless doorbells. He also supplied and installed windows, including those hard to get to windows in the basement. He probably did more work that I don't even know about as he takes pride in his work and is meticulous. I've completed previously several projects on my property with half a dozen different contractors, and I've never had an experience as poor as the one I had with Stella. 1. Subcontracted Work: Stella subcontracted 100% of the work to third-party contractors except for trash removal, which I'll address later. They likely hired cheap subcontractors and added a 20-30% markup for their own profit. 2. Lack of Communication: Communication was minimal. I was rarely informed about the next steps or timelines. Initially, I thought this was just one person's oversight, but after interacting with other employees, I realized it's systemic. The company seems to operate with a policy of minimal customer engagement unless absolutely necessary. 3. Unannounced Workers: Subcontractors (painters, electricians, carpenters, etc.) frequently showed up without notice and began working without even a greeting. On multiple occasions, I nearly called the police, thinking someone was trespassing. Most didn't wear uniforms, spoke little or no English, and simply said "talk to boss," making it impossible to understand what they were doing. Stella never communicated these details, and one of their employees even scolded me for asking the workers what they were doing. Ironically, Stella charged a "management fee" despite me having to coordinate with the subcontractors myself. These workers came sporadically one or two days at a time, then disappeared for weeks. This dragged the project out for several months. 4. No Shoe Covers: None of the subcontractors wore shoe covers, so I had to clean up after them daily. 5. Billing Issues: Stella issued invoices for partially completed work and expected immediate payment. If not paid right away, they charged interest even though the work wasn't finished. 6. Trash Removal: The only physical work done by a Stella employee was trash removal. My property was surrounded by piles of debris for months. They sent one person every 2-3 weeks, only when the trash had accumulated substantially. I had to constantly watch for loose nails and other hazards. 7. Final Advice: Save yourself 20-30% of the cost and a lot of headaches, hire a reliable local contractor instead.
