Because IVF is such a huge investment in money, time, and emotion, we were really careful about which IVF clinic we wanted to use after having a less-than-stellar experience with a clinic in Greenbrae. We could never have asked for such a phenomenal team as Nova. The Doctor Dr. Schmidt clearly cares about his patients, and it shows. Not once has there been any doubt that he was acutely aware of our case and the complex details of our treatment plan, which has meant so much to us. Moreover, in every interaction, he continually showed that his number one goal was our success and that he was deeply committed to reaching this goal. It is true that Nova has a long waitlist, but if you have the time to wait, it's well worth it. We received highly personalized, informed, caring attention every step of the way. At Nova, we were not simply a case number being passed from doctor to doctor, and our treatment plan was individualized throughout the entire process. Medical and Office Support The Nova team's support has made the difference between what could have been a potentially harrowing experience and one that has been seamless and as stress-free as possible. All of the front office staff (especially Laura) and the nurse coordinators have been exceedingly patient and genuinely kind through every step of this process. Angela even called me to give me her personal cell number when I was particularly nervous about some part of the process, and on several occasions, Nutha was there to answer questions big or small at any time of day or night. (Seriously, we called her once at 9pm on a Friday night.) Everyone on the team is well-informed, and lab results were always called into us on the same day. We never had to follow-up on our own as the medical team was always on the ball. Cost The cost for IVF and additional treatments are all posted on the website, and from my research, the price, though not the cheapest, is competitive. Moreover, Nova was nice enough to work with us on payment arrangements, which was more than fair. The Office, Lab, and Technology Nova has an on-site lab, treatment rooms, exam rooms, and conference area all under one roof, which made it really convenient for us. Also, unlike at other RE offices we've been to, the equipment and technology are up-to-date and immaculate. Nova is the best IVF Clinic in the Bay Area in my opinion. Dr. Schmidt and the entire team at Nova are AMAZING! Yes, ladies... hold on to your panties. There is a wait list to get in with Dr. Schmidt. Want to know why? He's that good. SART does not lie. This clinic has amazing success rates. I couldn't be happier with my experience at NOVA. Dr Schmidt - Like the others said, I would give him 10 stars if I could. He is an amazing doctor. Not only is he talented, he recruits the best staff, has an amazing lab, and genuinely cares about his patients. He knew about my case before I even walked through the door and got right down to business. There was never a time when he had to look up my file to remember who I was or what my treatment plan was. The Support staff - amazing. Their website does not lie when they say they have a "no voice mail" policy. No matter what time of day I was calling or why, I was always talking to a knowledgeable person who could answer my question. And when they did have to take a message, I got a call back right away (not hours later). This clinic is also very email friendly which is very convenient when you are at work. There is always a nurse on call and if you are in cycle, you just call the provided cell phone number and someone picks up (a real nurse that you know and have worked with before.. not some answering service). Billing - Imagine this ... I got a breakdown list telling me how much my cycle would cost. And that's how much I got billed. Not a penny more. There were no hidden costs or surprises. There were no billing mistakes. Wait Time - there are going to be a lot of appointments (and a lot is really an understatement). I never had to wait more than 10 minutes to be seen which is amazing. Embryology - somehow, everyone forgets about the embryologists when reviewing IVF clinics. Nova had two top notch embryologists. Much of the success of a clinic can be attributed to the embryology team. I spoke to Fen Chi DeFalco personally before our cycle and let me tell you, she is a bad ass. The Cycle - other clinics I met made the process seem overwhelming. There was reading materials, special diets, crazy supplements, training classes, etc, etc. Not at NOVA. I wish I can like this clinic, with all the great reviews on yelp and it's close to me.But unfortunately I don't have good experience with them. It took only 2-3 weeks to get a consultation appointment, which is great and fast comparing to other doctor's office. But my 1 hour consultation appointment, I Only get to see PA and have a sonogram. No doctor.maybe because my case is simple,and I am sure dr Schmidt and dr Shah are busy that day, but charging a new patient hundreds dollars for consult without seeing her in person is not gonna make the patient come back to you. Especially it's an private out of network practice. The girl who charged me say I can see doctor next time lol well maybe they should schedule me on a day doctor is available. So hundreds spent, with price quote of 30+k tx,I went home without seeing dr or even a phonecall promise. After I got home, I start have spotting because of sonogram. When it didn't stop I called the next day, they told me it's normal.I had many sonogram done before and never had any bleeding or spotting. It lasted 1.5 day.I still gave them two stars for nice and friendly staff, but I'm going to another doctor for treatment instead here. read more

I think it is safe to say that my grandchildren (twins) would not be here without Dr. Schmidt and his excellence in helping my daughter and son-in-law create an impressive number of embryos and knowing when to implant those embryos at the optimal time. I debated about whether to write a review for them or not, as I wasn't sure if I wanted such a personal experience on cyberspace. However, after looking at all the positive reviews they have, I couldn't in good conscience not write a review. I don't want anyone to go through the same experience as I did. After a referral from a fertility specialist (who does not do IVF), I visited Nova a few months back. At first, given my age (early 30s), Dr. Polanski and my original fertility specialist and obgyn all thought I am an ideal candidate for IVF. I have a condition called PCOS which resulted in lots of follicles, but no ovulation. I just needed a little stimulation. So, went in to see Dr. Polanski for a consult and ultrasound, and he sees close to 60 follicles in each ovary (normal women have closer to 10). Even though he hasn't done any labwork, or anything else beyond the ultrasound, Dr. P then proceeds to tell me that given the severity of my PCOS, I likely don't have a single good egg, probably have never had any, and that I will need to get a donor and surrogate. He hands me a tissue and then escapes to his private office. WORST bedside manner imaginable. You'd think someone would have a little bit more compassion after they tell you such horrible, and incredibly unexpected news. This absolutely broke my heart and I was depressed for days. Luckily, however, my brother in law is a doctor and knew a couple of fertility specialists I could speak with informally. I faxed in my medical records and they both said that, despite my condition, I am still an ideal candidate for IVF and recommended that I get a second opinion. From FOUR separate fertility specialists, all of them confirmed that there is NO way of knowing what egg quality is until you do your retrieval. I am not exactly sure why Nova wanted to squash me like a bug, but I think it may be because they are noted of having the highest success rates. Take that with a grain of salt -- they have higher rates because they are picky about their cases. Perhaps they thought I was too hard and didn't want me to bring down their probabilities. Or, perhaps, they wanted me to think that I needed to buy into one of their packages and lock in more trials. Bottom line: Do your research and find a doctor you're comfortable with. This is a stressful and trying process, and your emotions are already on a roller coaster. You don't need your doctors to kill your hope and attitude too. I'm at Stanford now and have found doctors who really care and are compassionate (I think its because its less about the money for them). I don't know yet whether our cycle will be successful, but I did go through my first egg retrieval today. We retrieved 12 good quality eggs. read more

I wish I could give Dr. Schmidt and the entire team 10 starts. They definitely deserve it and more... They gave us hope when we were almost ready to give up and search for other options. I am 35 now and have been trying to conceive for five years! I had 8(!!!) IVF treatments BEFORE I found out about NOVA. Only 1 out of those 8 treatments led to a pregnancy- an ectopic pregnancy. Both of my tubes had to be removed because they were both blocked. Therefore, my only option to conceive is through IVF. Fortunately enough, just before we were about to look for a surrogate or an egg donor solution, wer've heard about Dr. Schmidt. The friends who told us about him found out that he is the best one in CA and one of the best in the whole US (that's based on his success rates that speak by themselves- look at http://www.sart.org/find_frm.html). Needless to say that our friends already have two kids through his magical treatment. We had our 9th IVF treatment at NOVA. We got pregnant on that treatment, but for a reason the pregnancy didn't last (I had a miscarriage when I was almost 7 weeks pregnant). We had another three treatments after that one. The 10th didn't lead to a pregnancy (but it was still a pretty good treatment in terms of the number of eggs and the response to the hormones). The 11th treatment led to a pregnancy, but again we had a super early miscarriage. The 12th treatment was the best one- first, because the response to the drugs was great (we had the highest number of eggs I've ever had!!) second, the quality of the fertilization was high (we had 100% fertilization rate on that cycle) and third, we are currently 17 weeks pregnant with twins!!!! The reason why I write all of this is to save you all the trouble that I went through- and to make sure that you take the shortcut- and choose NOVA from the beginning. I could save so much time (and money!!) if I would only go there from the first place. My personal statistic also speaks by itself; before NOVA- I had only 1 success (i.e. the ectopic pregnancy) out of 8 IVF treatments, and with NOVA I had 3 successes (three pregnancies) out of 4 cycles. I believe that this statistic is a good indicator of what NOVA can do for anyone (especially since they succeeded in my difficult case...) Nova offers you an extraordinary doctor who is warm, understanding, empathic and super patient, as well as one of the best labs in the country (for those of you who don't know the LAB has a lot(!!) to do with your success in this process). And of course, they offer the most experienced, loving and caring nurses who remember you personally and treat you like you were the only patient in the clinic. I would also like to mention that Nova charges the same price as other clinics with much lower success rates- e.g. Stanford Fertility Center. So after this review, Dr. Schmidt emailed me, apologized for my experience, and refunded my money. It turns out the doctors are parting ways and going into practice for themselves. I give him a lot of credit for trying to right a wrong. While it doesn't "right" it, it does let me know he cares about his reputation enough to address the negative review and apologize on behalf of Nova. I wish I could give them 10 stars!! I honestly don't even know where to start! We were coming to Dr. Schmidt from a failed IVF with Zouves. These doctors don't even compare. Dr. Schmidt is by far the BEST doctor ever! After going to him he has far exceeded my expectations of a doctor and as far as I know he walks on water. He is very compassionate about his patients and takes the time to individualize each and everyone's case. When we had our failed IVF cycle he told us to wipe it out of our minds because it honestly could not even count as an IVF. We were both hurt with our first IVF cycle with Dr. Zouves but glad that we were able to get in with Dr. Schmidt. He paid great amount of attention and detail to each and every scan and blood work along my cycle. He either bumped my dosage up or down after looking over all my stats. Needless to say this is what really worked for me. He created mature follicles and that was our number one goal! The whole facility is just GREAT! The nurses are amazing and you can always reach them no matter what time of day it is. I usually called or emailed them if it wasn't pressing. They always responded in a timely manner and most of all in a caring manner. They are a big family! They make you feel right at home and this sometimes helps you take your mind off the whole IVF thing. We are currently 5 weeks pregnant with our first after 2 years of fertility treatments! I have very little personal experience with this clinic, but I know enough to know that something isn't right with it. I've had several IVF cycles in NYC and we are now looking for a new clinic to add another child to our family. It sounds like it has amazing personal service, which is so important with infertility treatments. However, it takes more than good bedside manner to achieve pregnancy. I am primarily concerned with their lack of research. I inquired about their thoughts on how immunology relates to fertility, successful implantation, and establishing a viable pregnancy. They sent me a list of article from 2000 and before- if an article was published in 2000, the research was done in the 1990's. The field of infertility has grown incredibly since then, especially related to immunology. It concerns me greatly that they are basing their current practices on research more than 10 years old. For what it's worth, the doctors with whom I worked back East were nationally acclaimed and used current research to work with their patients-this included immunological work-ups and treatment as needed. Overall, I'm disappointed in finding out how they approach their cycles... I had read such great things about the doctors themselves and hoped we would be a good fit. read more

First off, IVF first and foremost is a BUSINESS. It's completely sad that any couple has to endure the emotional roller coaster that is infertility. But when you're seeking out treatment, the faster you put it in your mind that you're dealing with a business first and a doctor second, the easier it will be to not get yourself upset over feeling like "just a number." THAT said. I've been to quite a few fertility clinics over the years and the staff at NOVA are the LAST group of people to ever make you feel as if they only want your money. In fact, they were the nicest group of doctors that my husband and I had ever dealt with and I can't recommend the staff enough. We only dealt with Dr. Schmidt, and you DO have the choice of dealing with one or the other if you really choose. I've heard unfavorable things about Dr. Polansky in regards to bedside manner, but they do have higher success rates than most clinics. Dr. Schmidt? That man walks on water in my eyes and not just because I had a successful cycle with him and now have a beautiful son, but because of his sincere bedside manner and total honesty with us. Along with the hope that he had for us as well. We fired a lot of questions off at him, more than the normal person knows about IVF and he was brazenly honest with us, and for that I'm very appreciative. He actually saved us money in that regard. On top of the fact that when we transferred to NOVA, he got on the phone with my husband himself, before we even made an appointment to set up a consult. He also went out of his way to help us transfer embryos over as well. Doctors are not perfect (that's why it's called practicing medicine and by and large, I'm not a fan of the medical profession, save for a select few that I hold near and dear to my heart), so when you're seeking out treatment for something of this magnitude, do your homework. The more educated you are, the better your experience will be. NOVA isn't going to be for everyone. Some people might have a better experience in a less personable environment, but that doesn't mean that NOVA is a bad place. I agree that when you're going through this, you need compassion, and even though Dr. Polansky is more matter of fact, the rest of the staff makes up for that in spades. I cannot begin to express how wonderful every person at Nova IVF is. We tried for a baby for about a year and a half with the outcomes during that time being a miscarriage and a D&C. She spent a lot of time with me explaining the egg freezing procedure and explained all of the data about the risks and benefits of specific induction regimens so clearly! I felt really empowered by my experience with her and now feel much more in control of my future fertility. She thoughtfully tailored my induction and procedure based on my labs, and after my eggs were frozen, sent me a summary of the process and outcome that was easy to understand and encouraging. Her staff are also incredible and understanding, efficient and highly responsive. I am so lucky I found Nova, and in particular Dr. Shah. Dr Schmidt and his staff is not only the best of the best, they handle you with so much compassion and care. We have had 3 successful ivf's in my family, all successful at 1st attempt. And yes this is 40 plus. He has gone above and beyond to provide care and service. Even staying there by himself when rest of the staff is on Christmas break so the cycle is attended as needed. My first impression of Nova facility was modern, polished, and blissful. Its ambiance delivered to you a breath of fresh air. I kicked myself that I did not try Nova earlier due to my own laziness. As luck had it, I was assigned to Dr. Schmidt at the first consultation. I was compelled by the unique methodology of cycle day 5 blood test to gage the propensity of pregnancy for that cycle. None of the other two clinics had discussed this method with me. Even though some the fertility terminologies flew over my head, I got to say that Dr. Schmidt is an impressive communicator; He listens and is lots fun to converse with. My past experience did not provide me with good opinions about doctor being a communicator, but Dr. Schmidt is an exception. You might think that communication does not matters for an IFV cycle, but it does, at least for my case. It puts you in a positive mental vibrancy, which helps your body response to medicine better. Dr. Schmidt graciously made me feel my voice heard and my concerns respected even though he disagreed with my inclination; My first cycle day 5 HCG blood test got bad results and he suggested to suspend the cycle and wait for the next cycle. I was antsy about it because my biological clock was ticking and I didn't like the "hurry up and wait" scenario, but if I would have insisted on going for that cycle, I would probably had a fruitless cycle, and wasted money and suffering. I am glad that I followed Dr. Schmidt's advice which saved money and health; He had uncanny spiritual advice as well, which was a bit surprise to me, but I correct my lens seeing the world from time to time; I am a sucker for meta-physicality and spiritual healing. Dr Schmidt has the science and spirituality in a perfect rapport. I believe that the miracle of creation is a divine force, science is an expression of the divine force, and Dr. is a helping hand to the process, angels perhaps. At the end, my prayers were answered and Dr. Schmidt hit a home run in 1 cycle. Dr. Polanski and the staffers are nice as well. I am now 10 weeks of pregnant. Even if I did not get pregnant in 1 cycle I would endorse Nova and Dr. Schmidt just the same. There are millions of jigsaws to be put together by the doctor into a perfect piece art of creation in an IFV cycle. IVF is such a collaboration between doctors and patients. At the end of a successful cycle, there is great jubilation, doctors and patients naturally bond closer, and sometimes become heart-warming friends; A cynic might say: is it "the art of communication" or "the genuine caring for the patient" sold you? I believe it is the later, but even if it were the first, I would say that it is totally worth it because his delivery of the procedure was so successful that I am persuaded that they know and care about me as much as I know and care about myself. Nova IVF is the best team I have ever been to. From the check in staff, to the support staff to Dr. Schmidt, I cannot praise them enough. Dr. Schmidt is very knowledgable and spends quality time with you explaining the process every step of the way. His support staff is equally amazing and helpful. I did 2/3 rounds of IVF with them- they were patient, responsive, caring, thoughtful, on time-- perfect all around. I followed their procedures and got pregnant on our third try. Sadly, I had a late term miscarriage but plan on going there again and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I am writing this review for all of you that are looking for an IVF doctor. I can wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Schmidt and his entire staff at NOVA. I dealt with "unexplained" infertility for 3.5 years. During this time I tried clomid and several medicated and natural IUI's. I felt nervous and blinded at taking the next step. If this was something that I wanted so much, then I needed to be willing and "ready" to make the next step. I wanted to interview several Doctor's in the area and find the right fit. I went for the initial appointment at 3 top Doctor's in San Francisco and still was not feeling comfortable with the entire process. I didn't feel understood or informed enough when leaving all three of these appointments. There were so many terms, drugs, and procedures that made me feel intimidated. Next was Dr Schmidt. We sat with Dr Schmidt for about an hour and he asked several questions about my history and came to an explained conclusion of my infertility. He assured me that although I was a great client for IVF, although this was not my last resort. This was the honestly I needed and the reassurance that someone was looking out for my best interest not just ready for another client. Needless to say the entire process was seem less. I always felt I was in a very controlled environment and monitered closely. The whole team works together and communicates. Very disappointed with this clinic. I've had a successful IVF pregnancy in 2019 with Kaiser located in Sacramento. I moved back to San Jose made the decision to come here. I honestly feel they only seen me as dollar sign and not patient. They lack in communication. I would send them an email and get three emails back from three different people. Making it very confusing and overwhelming. They also lack on helping getting blood work from Kaiser for my partner. They said kaiser didn't have the blood work.. lies lies! I was able to get it the same day. My transfer was scheduled at 1:30pm. I waited for an hour outside. Every appt the doctor or ultrasound tech was late. They didn't allow my partner to come in with me due to Covid but did allow another patient have her husband with her. Anyone reading this please do your research. Laura the receptionist tried to convince me to keep my embryos and made me feel really bad for wanting to discard my embryos. Look lady you obviously don't know me and we don't need spend another $5k. We are ok with the outcome so stop pressuring on telling me I will regret it. The only thing I do regret is continuing to complete my process with Nova. Good luck! read more

I was referred to Nova in October of 2008 and it was the best experience ever. Dr. Schmidt, Julie and Angela, were the kindest, warmest, professional people I had ever met. My IVF cycle was perfect and my pregnancy even better. It was worth every penny. I only had a couple of encounters with Dr. Polansky and he was fine. We are extremely pleased with the Services offered @ NOVA and of-course the outcome of the treatment. We had 3 failed IVF cycles in another IVF clinic in Bay Area and switched to Nova and they did not disappoint us. How do you review a doctor and staff that have made your dreams come true? Words could never express the deep gratitude we have for Dr. Schmidt and his dedicated staff. I remember reading Yelp reviews when we first started treatment with Nova and imagining the day that I could right my own positive review...well the time has come. We first went to a different IVF clinic and we were disappointed with how sterile and impersonal our experience was. A Bay Area doctor recommended Nova IVF and we were lucky to get an appointment. We expected it to be similar to our previous experience but we were astonished from day one at the stark contrast between Nova and the other clinic. The huge difference was with the staff and the nurturing environment that they have created. Our treatment with Nova spanned a few years due to our schedules and the entire process start to finish taking a few months per retrieval cycle, so we had the pleasure of working closely with almost every Nova employee. We figure the hiring process at Nova somehow screens for genuinely compassionate people. Dr. Schmidt is the best fertility doctor around according to success rates and reputation. He is also a truly caring, big-hearted person who wants to see his patients achieve their dreams. Laura always greeted us warmly when we walked through the door and every person we worked with on a given day, Dani, Danielle, Jessica, Stephanie, Megan, Siobhan, Susana, Azalea...were always kind, caring, helpful, and knowledgeable. We met Fen-Chi briefly during embryo transfer and Dr. Shah called us to deliver the good news of a positive pregnancy test. Overall, we felt like we had a huge support team and that everyone's goal was to see us have a baby. We knew that in the end if we didn't end up conceiving that we could be at peace knowing that we did everything possible because we knew that we were getting the best treatment through Nova. Much to our surprise and elation, our first embryo transfer was successful. We now have a beautiful, healthy baby girl, as well as additional embryos on reserve for future transfer.
