Nothing Bundt Cakes (Get it?) is a month old pastry shop in the Village of Newtown Shopping Center. It is in fact a franchise that deals in only one product - Bundt Cakes. Risky endeavor to rely on one thing to carry a business to profitability. To succeed, those cakes have got to be great. And, they are. World class cream cheese icing. Rich, moist cake full of plenty of flavor. A delicious meld in your mouth delight. Our lemon cake was kept cool overnight in the fridge, and taken out this morning to sit at room temperature for two hours. It came in a large cake box and wrapped in plastic, which must be removed while still cold to avoid pulling the icing off at warmer temps. A small card with instructions is attached with a mini clothespin. Cute! So, why not a perfect score? The store experience is a bit overdone. Before the door closes, a voice welcomes you to NBC, and directs you to the free samples. I had to look for the person talking to me who was behind the high counter. She took away my attention while scanning the shop, making me a little uncomfortable. I prefer a moment to orient myself before the friendly sales assault. Too, I did not relate to the scripted welcome. Better to allow the store to speak for itself, grab the imagination, and then offer a more natural approach by staff. Also, if you look at the photos from the company, the top of each cake has a icing plug across the normal opening from the Bundt pan. Looks good. Our reality was no such cap over the hole, but just a deep well to the bottom of the cake. It was iced, like a snow covered vent from a volcano. No mistake, our lemon Bundt was excellent. These babies are patently addictive. A few adjustments and the experience could be completely unforgettable.

White chocolate raspberry with a sparkler I added for NYE. Just amazing!

We tried the standard assorted box. The flavors were great, my favorite was the chocolate. My husband really enjoyed the lemon.

The Mommy To Be is a huge Harry Potter fan & I honestly wasn't sure how we would incorporate this theme into a baby shower but we did and boy oh boy was the cake out of this world! The details were amazing! The little baby cake topper was so cute, and they gave instructions on how to keep her (to dry her out) which the mom will do. The cake not only looked amazing it tasted delicious also. Often so many of the ascetically nice looking cakes don't taste so good. In this case it was a win win all around. Gender Reveal Ruined-- Followed By The Worst Customer Service I've Ever Experienced…read more I have never written a negative review in my life, but this experience was so upsetting and handled so poorly that I feel obligated to share it. I ordered a gender reveal cake and was extremely clear from the very beginning that this was for a gender reveal and that I needed blue on the inside and white on the outside. When I placed the order, I gave very specific directions: white on the outside, blue on the inside. I even provided a photo of exactly what I wanted. Later that same day, I called back to confirm again: white on the outside, blue on the inside. Then when I picked the cake up, I had a third confirmation point. They read the instructions back to me and again confirmed it was supposed to be white on the outside and blue on the inside. I even verbally confirmed one more time before leaving the store. So there were three separate touch points of communication confirming the exact same thing. This cake was for my first baby's gender reveal. This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment for my husband and our family. I spent time planning this, buying flowers, an outfit, and setting up something incredibly special for us. When we cut the cake during the reveal -- while filming -- the inside was completely white. No blue. Nothing. The entire moment was ruined. My husband found out we were having a boy in the most anticlimactic, confusing way possible. It was heartbreaking and honestly humiliating to have planned something so meaningful only for it to completely fall apart because of a mistake that was confirmed THREE separate times. What made this exponentially worse was the customer service afterward. When I called the next morning, I was met with rudeness and condescension. Later, when someone finally called me back, I was literally asked if I was "sure" there wasn't blue inside -- as if I didn't just cut into and dig through my own cake. I had to prove their mistake by sending photos. During that same call, I explained how rude the first person I spoke to had been. The response I got was essentially, "Yeah... she really shouldn't be answering the phone" and that she's not very good at customer service. That honestly left me speechless. If someone is not good at customer service, why are they the person answering customer calls? Especially when those calls are about major life events and serious issues? It was one of the strangest, most unprofessional interactions I have ever had with a business in my life. At no point initially did anyone apologize. I had to be visibly upset and crying before anyone even attempted to say sorry. Even the owner never called me directly -- he texted asking me to call him about a refund. When I did call, there was still no real apology, just discussion about money. Let me be very clear: This was never about the $50. This was about ruining one of the most meaningful milestones of my life and then treating me like I was an inconvenience when I called about it. People make mistakes. I understand that. But how you handle the mistake is what defines your business -- and this was handled terribly from start to finish. I have never been treated so badly by so many people from one business, especially over something tied to a major life event. I will never use this bakery again, and I will absolutely be sharing this experience with others so they can make an informed decision. If you are trusting them with an important life event, I strongly suggest reconsidering.

There is no icing and does not even say "birthday" we could have walked in to acme and asked them to write on a pre made cake and it would be better quality. When called to ask if there was a way to fix the cake to be what was ordered which was "a floral theme with a plot of big flowers" The owner hung up the phone and said she had a wedding cake to focus on- that this was an imposition and that "next time I'll put extra flowers" Is it just me - but I see zero flowers and the thinnest spread of leftover icing that is on the top of the cake. Rudest woman and after repeat service for 8 years this was the worst service- since we paid for a cake i can't imagine that the service of providing the cake is an imposition. Will never return. On the other hand, if you are a walk-in retail customer desiring something off the rack and on display in the glass cases, it is rather a hit or miss experience. I stopped by in the mood for a great brownie or exceptional fruit bar from the skilled hands of the proprietress, but found little to chose from on a Friday mid morning. I asked about the brownies and was told she would be making them today. Maybe she meant they were in the oven and would be out shortly (I hoped)? No. She just repeated that she was baking them today. Not helpful, but clearly an indication that I was bothering her. Sorry. My bad. So, I looked around and purchased a vanilla frosted yeast donut, red velvet cake donut and a raspberry French pastry twist stick. $7.50 for the three. I lay the cash down and walked back into the morning rain. It took me more than a day to sample my acquisitions, but can now report that they were a mixed bag (of donuts). The vanilla frosted yeastee was good; plenty of nice sweet frosting and a fresh superstructure beneath. Yet, the red velvet was in a state of advancing staleness and was a dry bite and chew. Coffee washdown was essential. Looked better than it ate. On the third hand, the raspberry twist was excellent; flaky delicate with a lovely buttery pastry surrounding the mildly tart red berry jam. Could have eaten more of those with genteel gusto. While I won't be rushing back to DBD, I will pass the word along that you can succeed there only if choosing carefully. Consider yourself advised! Just don't ask too many foolish questions. 2.5 STARS

Now I could tell you all about how perfectly tasty everything is. From the classic banana puddings (I prefer the caramel version myself,) to the cookies, to the pineapple upside-down mini cakes. Yes, I could tell you that. But I want to speak to something deeper. I want to speak to belonging and community; and to fairness. As a biracial person with a brown sister, I feel the pull to support black and brown businesses. It's not a secret. And sometimes you do it, and sometimes you privately think "Damn. I wanna be supportive but this place is a mess." Then there's Sweet Life. NOT that. FILLED with good product at a great price, delivered by owners and staff who actually give a damn about being loving and supportive to all different types of people. And did I mention the sweets are POPPIN'? And to that statement of fairness. Today I came in to place an order, and when the price came up, for a moment I thought "Damn. That is a lot higher than I remembered, but I am not about to question them. They set the price and that price is what they deserve." So I paid. But then I noticed there was more in my bag that I'd asked for, and that there had been a miscommunication. When I tell you that this miscommunication was corrected with swiftness *AND* a smile. No shade. No drama. Just an "Ooops, oh well, here's your refund on the balance." I know this seems very basic but we all know it isn't. We have all been in that awkward situation where as a customer we have to point out an error, and the vendor turns it into a Shakespearan tragedy. Not Sweet Life. "Oops. Sorry! Fixed. Love you." So, to recap: Stunningly delicious sweets. Prices fair as hell. Communicative, inclusive staff doing the right thing. You need to take those money dollers and haul your ass over here TODAY. Now...where did I put my insulin pen?
