    Mac and cheese
    Karenna G.

I got the Mac and cheese one time and it was great. The next time I got it, disgusting and inedible. The staff didn't take us seriously and tried to say that they always give you 1/3 of what we got the first time. It's covered completely in oil and disgusting. It was just really unprofessional. We ordered this because I'm in the hospital and wanted some comfort food. What a disappointment. The staff was dismissive and apathetic. Attached is a photo of how oily and disgusting the Mac and cheese was. The workers said there's no difference between this and the creamy Mac and cheese we received before

We came down at lunch time to try their Oxtail Philly Cheese on Coco Bread. The place is clean and neat and the people at the counter were super sweet and friendly. The food is delicious, the oxtail was cooked beautifully and tasted savory with some real spice that was unexpected but definitely welcomed. The coco bread is soft and sweet while the cheese just adds a saltiness that carries through an already amazing sandwich. It's a bit pricey for the sandwiches but I felt it was worth it and didn't mind at all. I wish they weren't an hour away because I would come here daily. I'll most certainly be back for another round.

I was eager for some good new eats so went to my "Want to Try at Home" List, and completely forgot where/when/how I bookmarked this place. The only thing I wrote down in the notes was, "ox tail cheese steak is fire", so that probably means I saw it on a tik tok. That, and the fact that it was across boroughs meant that I would be able to get my cycling exercise in and some yums at the end of it, so I headed out from my apartment in Brooklyn and made the trek out to Astoria to try this deli. The place is set in the middle of the block near a bunch of other nondescript delis and quick eats. I would have missed it if I wasn't looking for it. Pro-tip, if you need to use the bathroom, you can go across the street in Mount Sinai. There were two workers; the cashier was super friendly and had good energy about her. Her recs were, of course, the ox tail cheese steak on coco bread, their most signature thing, as well as the jerk chicken empanada, so I ordered and eagerly waited the goods. Even though it says "no seats", there is one small table outside for summer weather where I planted myself to have the food fresh. I started with the highlight -- the jerk chicken empanada. The chicken was super moist and had that correct amount of spice that jerks your taste buds. But, it's even better when you add some green sauce. 11/10, I'd come back just for the empanadas. The ox tail was piping hot, so much so that the cheese oozed out. It looked promising. Unfortunately, it was very...one note. There was a ton of ox-tail in the sandwich, but there were still little bits of bone that were annoying to get through. I really wish there was more variety of flavour in it. The green sauce helped, but when you charge $22 for an oxtail sandwich, I kind of expected more complexity of flavour. But then again, it's just a deli sandwich, after all.

    The Jamrock Chop

Oh my !! oh my !!! Firstly, I highly recommended, secondly, i highly recommend, & thirdly, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. This place is NOTHING short of amazing (5 star vibes). The staff is friendly and there's not much of an ambiance since it's an order and go type place but there is a table outside if that helps. During my first visit, I tried the jamrock chop and I see why it's a popular sandwich. After the first bite, I felt instant euphoria - had one of those I'm happy to be alive for this moment(s). My friend tried the Jeremy and had a very similar reaction to mine. We were just both grateful to stop by and try Notable. I also bought the oxtail Philly to take home and holyyyyyyyyy that didn't disappoint either. I even went back and tried the Philly cheesesteak, which was very good also but had nothing on the jamrock chop or the Jeremy (+oxtail philly). More people need to know about this place, that's my main takeaway. At this point, you can try anything here and I bet it will pass the taste test - The sandwiches are so flavorful.

Unassuming on the outside but make no mistake this place is packed with flavor and great service! I was lucky enough to get their last serving of the special oxtail cheesesteak ($25) and it was phenomenal. Served on coco bread, you get some sweetness balancing the savory and peppery filling - I would say a tad bit salty but yes, I still inhaled the sandwich. It's rich and heavy, hard not to be in a food coma after. I would love to come back to try their other items including the empanadas (there's a sampler plate with 6 for $24).

    The Jamrock Chop Sandwich (~$11)

Ordered: The Jamrock Chop Sandwich (~$11): chopped jerk chicken, jerk sauce, and sweet peppers, on Coco Bread (+$3) Aya's take: Notable has been on my radar for a while and when I was in the area looking for a quick lunch, Notable came to mind. I called in my order about 10 mins before and when I got there, it seemed like they had no idea about it. I ended up re-ordering, paying, and waiting there. I waited over 20 minutes (due to the lunch hour rush, short-staffing, and random disorganization) until I finally got my sandwich. Upon opening my sandwich, I immediately noticed that it was on a regular roll, not Coco Bread that was an additional charge. The chopped jerk chicken pieces were also very irregular. Some pieces were big while other bites only had shredded chicken. It made the sandwich even messier and harder to eat. The jerk sauce also was a bit on the sweeter side and didn't have that smoky and fiery flavors that you would normally get. I really wanted to like it and maybe it was an off day, but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. I would consider coming back on a Thursday to try their oxtail.

    Veggie Quesadilla

Notable (pronounced No Table as in there are no tables, no chairs - just take out) is a traditional American Deli with Jamaican vibes and the most delicious Jamaican hot food. I had to check it out and we were most definitely not disappointed. We got the Stewed Chicken, Jerk Chicken and Oxtail platters (served with rice and peas, veggies and plantains, which are ALL delicious in their own right). We also picked up The Jamrock Chop (a delicious play on the famous chopped cheese with a Jamaican twist), Jerk Empanadas and a Veggie Quesadilla with fries for our vegetarian diner. What to say? Everything was delicious, flavorful, tender, fall off the bone. Legit Jamaican right here in Astoria - tucked away in an unassuming spot. They follow a weekly Jamaican food menu so get there on the right day for the dish you're looking for. They do; however, serve jerk chicken every day. Monday - Curry Chicken Tuesday - BBQ Chicken Wednesday - Stew Chicken Thursday - Oxtail Friday - Curry Goat Saturday - Fried Chicken Oxtail goes quick. I called my order in ahead of time for pickup. They're also on GrubHub! Counter staff is so friendly. They accept cards as payment, as well. Definitely head on over and check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Run by a hard-working owner and staffed extremely well, this place is clean and well run. There are a few delis on the same block, but this one offers a great mix of hot and cold food plus coffee that always tastes freshly brewed. As an aside, they also have salad dressing for sale in the fridge on its own, which shows you this establishment's close attention to detail when it comes to its products. There's usually a line out the door here for breakfast and for good reason. Egg white options are available and bagels. Can be coupled with boars head meat and cheese as part of a delicious breakfast sandwich. Overall just a solid five star deli that doesn't offer a lot of glitz and glamour .. but plenty of hearty food to keep your belly happy for the rest of the day.

Finding quality Jamaican food can be incredibly difficult in certain areas of Queens but Notable is definitely a noteworthy spot that's new to Astoria. They offer not only the traditional Jamaican eats such as oxtail and jerk chicken but they offer some Jamaican inspired sandwiches as well. We went on a Friday which is Curry Goat day so we opted for that and their Jerk Chicken w/ Grilled Pineapple hero. To our surprise, the owners were there and greeted us warmly which made the experience feel warm and hospitable. One of the owners took it a step further and he even brought the food out to us as we photographed the outside of the establishment. 10 out of 10 experience regarding customer service and hospitality. As for the food - the jerk chicken sandwich is an absolute rockstar and highlight on the menu. The hero was loaded with chicken, large slices of pineapple and the sauce was bursting with flavor. A perfectly harmonious balance of sweet and spicy. I would 100% return for this sandwich alone. For the main course, the curry goat. First and foremost, the portion was large so unless you're super hungry, it can be shared between two people. The goat was well seasoned and tender as you can hope for. The plantains were delicious - I could've had 10 of them. I will most certainly be back but next time on a Thursday for the oxtail!

First of the the owner is super cool gave pointers on his experiences with food the sandwich is amazing I ended up driving all the way from Hempstead for 3 of them it's a nice Caribbean deli the sandwich came out fast and neat I give them a 9.5 out 10 The store was very welcoming just I will deff be back

Can't remember the names but it was the jerk chicken with the coleslaw and the oxtail empanadas.

Just for the record, the oxtail cocoa bread Patty is only served on thursdays. But the jerk chicken patty with the coleslaw... Jesus take the wheel! That was so good! The bread made it sweet and tender. But the coleslaw chicken kind of gave it a Caribbean chicken sandwich bag. Either way it was so freaking good! The oxtail empanadas were good just rich! I will be returning! Now they have lemonades there that are fresh made. Do know you are not down south! And he adds sugar for you. So that's the only reason one star is missing. I need that lemonade to be made good sweet and refreshing from when I get it! But I can't blame them for not knowing how to make it! But it really wasn't good at all. I could have just gone with water. But who cares! That food was so good!

It's a pretty nice sports bar with large TV screens throughout the place so will definitely be on my list of places to hit up to watch a few games! What to make of this place?…read more When we visited in September (at that time), a wanna-be sports bar had just taken over the Greek taverna Blue Sea Taverna (before that, two iterations of Akrotiri). Both Greek tavernas had failed or gone out of business. So we were curious to see what changes had been made. When we entered, we were initially confused because the seating, especially the lounge seating, did not create a sports bar vibe. Even adding a bunch of TVs did not give us that feel either. Instead, our initial impression was that they were trying to convert an old Greek taverna into a gastropub, similar to other well-known ones in the area. And I should also add we had not been following the local news about the controversy regarding their name association with a World War II fortified bunker that was blown up at the end of the Second World War, and only read about the controversy over their name after we left, and on social media. Apparently, the owner(s) were most likely unaware of its historical context when naming their establishment. So we did not factor that into this review. Upon entering the Wolf's Lair, the seating was that of a modified Mediterranean restaurant. We chose the comfy seating looking out towards 29th Street and 30th Avenue. It had been raining heavily, and so we were just glad to be inside. Because our initial impression was that we were in a Mediterranean gastropub, we ordered lamb chops with lemon potatoes. The waiter, who may have been one of the owners, informed us that this vegetable was not on the menu; however, when our chops arrived, as you can see from the photos, we were indeed served lemon potatoes. We got what we ordered, which made us happy, and the chops were cooked to perfection. As we usually do not drink alcohol, beverages were not factored into our review. However, there was one thing we found a little strange and creepy. When we left, one of the employees, presumably an owner, insisted on coming out to help take photos. This was a little off-putting. Nevertheless, we got some good shots. In writing this review, we spent a lot of time deliberating our experience at the Wolf's Lair. We focused on the restaurant, service, food quality, and atmosphere. While the overall experience was excellent, we did not find Wolf's Lair to have a sports-bar atmosphere, but rather a family-dining atmosphere. On the day we visited, there was hardly any action at the bar, and most of us seated were into the food, if nothing else, with one family having a birthday party for one of their children. Overall, we had a good experience. Whether we come back to see if the Wolf's Lair becomes an actual sports bar, well, that's another matter.

The place is LOUD albeit with good taste of retro, 90's music and not the modern trash that floods the radio waves so I can rock with that. Place is sized pretty well with an outside seating area and plenty of tables inside the albeit dimly lit bar/restaurant. Coming into the place I was greeted by a blonde woman who seemed to be a supervisor of the area. She directed me to a comfortable seating area and a server took my order afterwards. The place was relatively busy so the wait for my food was kind of in the long range, about maybe 15 minutes. I ordered Chicken & Waffles with Iced Tea and the food was definitely worth the wait. That chicken was so good, a bit on the crisp side but it's solid in taste. The Waffle had such an awesome texture with the right measure of powdered sugar, decorated with Blueberries and Strawberries, the entrée was plated very well. The Iced Tea, I didn't know it was unsweetened so that threw me off but some sugar kinda fixed that. Service was also 'A' Tier. The place was busy so it was a tad on the slow side but they were very attentive. About 3 different servers tended to me whether it was about my order, how I liked it and paying for the bill when I was finished. That's dedication and I always give props to that. While deciding where to go one day, this was suggested and im so glad I went. The restaurant is cozy with tables inside the main dining room and in an enclosed outdoor seating area. Im guessing it opens in the summer. I sat down with my niece while waiting for my sister and for a good 5-7 minutes, no one stopped by and gave a menu nor offered water. Finally after about 3 people walked by not saying anything, someone came. The area is not that big and 7 minutes isnt that long but to sit there any not be addressed by all the staff walking by was annoying. Finally my sister came and we were offered water and a menu. After hearing about the specials and asking for recommendations, we settled on the gnocchi (housemade potato gnocchi, burrata, peas, pesto sauce, toasted pine nuts), Pappardelle alla Bolognese (housemade ribbon pasta, meat sauce), and side of sautéed spinach. The food arrived and we were pleasantly delightful by the main. The gnocchi was so soft and creamy, the sauce was delicious. Im not a fan of gnocchi but this was so good. The papardelle was my meal and it was also so good. There was a lot of pasta and a good amount of meat sauce. It was also delicious. The spinach on the other hand was bland. It has no flavor and we had to add some salt. A few times we tried to call someone over to our table but felt like no one was paying attention. When we were done with our meals, my sister had a few pieces of gnocchi left. She asked for a box as it was to be my nieces lunch for tomorrow. I then said, can you also box up the spinach. A few minutes later, the server dropped off a bag with one container and said here's the spinach. We tried to call his attention but he was already walking away. Where was the gnocchi. Finally when we came back, we asked about it and he said oh I thought it was garbage. I said no we asked for it to be boxed. He said let me talk to the kitchen. He came back and said sorry, they cant do anything but one dessert will be on me. I guess thats fine but we more wanted the food for the baby. For dessert we ordered a tiramisu and pistachio gelato. The tiramisu was in a jar as opposed to a cake slice. One bite of the ice cream and I knew it was bad. It was grainy and sandy texture. I looked up why that would be and one reason stated it could be improper storage, like it was unfrozen or melted then refrozen. I wasn't chancing that. I told the server and said I couldn't eat it. He offered another dessert but I said know, then offered a limoncello shot. While I appreciate the offer, we weren't drinking before so that wasn't the best option to offer. I just said im fine without a replacement. When we got the bill, the dessert was taken off like he said he would. We paid and left. Overall the main course/pasta meals were delicious. The sides and desserts could use work. Service was alright. Id definitely come back for the food and to try some of the pizza.

What a charming neighborhood gem! We came on a Monday night as a party of three to celebrate our…read morefriend Liz's bday and I have had this place bookmarked for a while and it easily exceeded expectations. The decor is simple but cozy, it seems like a place you find yourself in, in the middle of the week. The food: Anchovy Special with Arugula and Orange Supremes- Shocking how good this was, the anchovy was cooked perfectly, they were incredibly tasty without being oily. It went nicely with the arugula and the freshness of the citrus. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=WXs8evyJarabbHv9XVj6fw Melanzane alla Parmigiana- breaded eggplant, mozzarella, tomato sauce, basil. This was basically an eggplant parm and the eggplant was cooked perfectly, the cheese was ok but the sauce made this dish really tasty with the nice homemade focaccia they give you in the beginning. Branzino Special with Cannelli Beans and Swiss Chard. This was the winner of the evening. The cripsy skin was amazing. The fish was cooked to perfection, the cannelli beans I thought were going to be weird but it added a nice creaminess to the fish. Lastly the swiss chard was crunchy on the ends and nice and tender on the leaf. This should be put on the regular menu. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=xNVfJCmf89OOY-1ME3FY7Q Controfiletto- grilled prime angus N.Y. strip steak served with roasted marble potatoes. I hate to say it but as good as the steak was, the roasted potatoes was the star of show. The potatoes were amazing. Pappardelle alla Bolognese- housemade ribbon pasta, meat sauce. This was good but came off a bit plain. The pasta was homemade but it was almost to a fault since the pasta came out too soft. The flavors were good but I felt this would have been a better, reheated the next day kind of dish.
