We sat at a hi-top in the bar area by the windows; football was on the tv, and the background music was soft. The Autumn Spiced Sangria was perfect for the gloomy, rainy, almost fall night. The Butternut Squash Flatbread, also on the Oktoberfest menu, was sweet and savory with roasted squash, Brussels sprouts, and a balsamic glaze. The toppings overwhelmed the flavor of the sage-pecan pesto. The flatbread had a nice crusty edge, but the dough was undercooked on the leftover pieces that I brought home. The Waldorf Salad was a nice mix of flavors, crunchy apples, nuts, and warm chicken. Service was friendly and prompt but I was surprised that our server didn't ask if we wanted the signature NYAJ bread and oil. We've been going to Not Your Average Joe's for many years but had never tried the Oktoberfest menu. It's only there for a limited time; check it out. read more

Absolutely love the bread with olive oil and parmesan cheese dip ! That's where the 4 stars is coming from! The chicken Caesar salad was ok but I'm not recommending it. Iceberg lettuce just doesnt do it for me. Chicken tenders and fries were really good. This was all dropped off to us by a friend. We've enjoyed many visits to this NYAJ's in the past, so when we recently moved back into the area, we added it into the rotation- unfortunately, while the customer service remains high, the food has been disappointing. All our orders have been for items we order and re-order so we felt we gave everything a fair comparision. On one takeout order a couple of weeks ago, the Chicken Piccata was just not good. Instead of the expected lemony, creamy sauce, it was highly peppered which didn't mesh well with the very few capers tossed on top. Very strange. A Chicken Caesar salad had a nice grilled chicken cutlet and some romaine mixed with iceberg to bulk it up. The dressing was nice, but the entire salad was smaller, made with mostly romaine from the inner yellow leaves, completely different from the Chicken Caesar we ordered the week prior in-house. That in-house salad was 100% leafy romaine, delicious. You can't expect takeout to be the same as eat-in but still . . . Another take out order this week had two Caesar salads, one with grilled salmon, one with steak tips. Each salad had just enough lettuce (all yellow romaine, zero green leaves) to cover the bottom of the takeout container. We added salmon as a protein and requested it be cooked to medium. It was very well done, flavorless and dry, not so much as a dash of salt. The other skimpy salad had steak tips as the added protein, requested rare. Also cooked to well done, also with zero seasoning. If the kitchen is out of romaine - take it off the menu. There are other salads to get and there's nothing as sad as a yellow-lettuce Caesar! We don't order or come in at the height of lunch or dinner time, so whoever put these small, sad salads together had time to find the romaine! All in all, I guess if you decide to eat in, there's a better chance of getting your order made with the usual high quality from NYAJ's than a takeout order. For now, it's out of our rotation for a couple of weeks until we feel like taking another chance! read more

The service is always excellent but the quality control and consistency of the food has gone way downhill over the years. Today I ordered the brat special that was to be braised. They came out completely burnt. The photo says it all. We also ordered the chicken piccata. What we received was two pieces of fried chicken and a side of pasta the had the capers and piccata sauce in it. In the past few years when ordering pizza it was always hit or miss. Really Bad Food Quality.. My family ordered a few small pizzas and some gluten free rolls for our son who has a gluten allergy. We ordered three sides of the rolls where they were completely stale I mean really bad almost moldy where my wife and I were surprised they would even serve them like that so we threw them all out. The pizza was not even that good and Uber Eats did not even refund us for the rolls. No big deal not much money but we would never eat here again that is for sure. read more

Went here during covid, when the weather was getting a bit cooler. The staff had masks, tables were spaced appropriately and them seemed to be following the covid protocols. We did call ahead for a reservation as they get booked up pretty quick. Luckily they are still serving the bread, yum. We had a view of the reservoir from our table which was nice. Horrible experience. First, we walked in and had to wait 10 minutes for a host because there was none to be found at 1pm on a SATURDAY to seat us. Meanwhile the restaurant was completely empty. Our food was horrible. We paid $54 for just two dishes of pasta. I got the vodka pasta with chicken, but the sauce tasted like I was eating expired milk. My mom got the chicken Parmesan and her chicken was so burnt she could barely bite through it. The food is way too overpriced for what you're getting and the restaurant is not clean. Amazing food, drinks and service!!! I have been to this location so many times and it never disappoints. I love that they have so many gluten free options. The carrot cake is to die for! Anytime I try a new drink or meal, I am happy with it. Would highly recommend the salads, caprese chicken sandwich, ahi tuna app, pasta dishes and the kids meal. You just can't go wrong. With limited options in the area, sometimes you find yourself back at an otherwise non-favorable eatery out of necessity, convenience or laziness. The silver lining: you discover what you can do to ensure you don't replicate prior negative experiences. For this NYAJ, the answer is simple: stick with a weekday lunch. Maybe the kitchen can't handle the full dinner crowd, or perhaps the FOH gets frazzled during evening pops (esp when packed to the gills pre-Company Theater performance nights), but whatever the case, we had a relaxed lunch recently that was by far the best Joe's experience I've had at this location. The mustard chicken ($14) was moist, textured and flavorful with a heaping side of Brussels and chipotle mashed potatoes (much better this time around, although admittedly still not my fave versions of either), and Mom's turkey club ($12) was stacked with crunchy bacon, fresh veggies and nicely toasted focaccia. Hot, crisp rosemary fries complimented nicely. Melissa D was attentive, and our soft drinks never saw bottoms - even when she spilled a full beverage on our booth neighbors (doh! hey, it happens). It felt less chaotic and the food - in presentation and quality - were just better when the dining room is less than 50%. read more

We ordered takeout at NYAJ on Saturday around 4pm. It was freezing out and I wasn't super hungry so I ordered the tomato soup and grilled cheese. My husband ordered a burger cooked medium. The restaurant was NOT busy when we picked up our food. My grilled cheese was very burnt and very hard. The tomato soup was okay. My husbands burger was pretty rare and he described it has a "blob of mush". This man almost never complains and if he didn't like it you know it's bad. The bread was almost flattened to non existence and was soggy. Really such a bad experience and a complete waste of money. I cannot believe the cooks sent our food out in this state. The chicken quesadilla was good; however, slightly overdone. It actually was disappointing. And I did request sour cream. I guess it was more of a gourmet sour cream - I was given some additional zesty cream (sour cream based) "sauce". Next time, I would also stick with ordering wine, the "American Mule" cocktail was good; however, it was not something I really thought was worth $7.99. The bread .... oh the bread and dipping oil ..... divine!!!!!! It was very very cold outside and we one of the first tables in the restaurant. I think any business would have difficulty maintaining warm temps inside when the weather is so cold. It was really a great place to meet up with family. I definitely would go back. We were looking forward to having dinner a few days ago at the Norwell location following a show at the Company Theater and I was hoping to be able to provide some positive feedback after a disappointing experience at the Randolph location a few months ago but unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity to dine at NYAJ. We (party of 3) arrived at 5:50 and gave our name to the host. He said that it would be a 10-15 min wait since tables needed to be cleared. That seemed reasonable but when 20 minutes had passed and the host station was vacant, we peeked into the diningroom and saw that there were many clean but unoccupied tables and the host was busy helping the wait staff to serve customers. Some more time passed and a staff member passing by asked if we wanted to put our name in. I explained that we did that 20 or more minutes earlier. She said that it was now a half hour wait and that they were short staffed. She also said she'd check on the status of our table but I never saw her again. We waited a few more minutes watching other frustrated patrons who were in a similar situation turn around and leave, some without even putting their name in (how could they, there was no one to give their name to?). I completely understand the restaurant being understaffed but why not let people know that upfront so they have realistic expectations and can decide whether they want to wait 30-45 min or longer? If guests don't mind waiting and there are clean vacant tables why not at least seat them with the understanding that it may take longer than usual to be served instead of letting multiple parties pile up near the host station? I don't mean to fault the young host...I know he was doing his best to keep things moving along by assisting the waitstaff but someone needed to be tending to the wannabe patrons at the front of the house. After 35 minutes and still no sense of when we might be seated we cancelled our name from the waitlist via text and went to the 99. We still would like to support NYAJ so maybe we'll try again another time. read more

Before the pandemic, we used to enjoy this place. Unfortunately, the quality has declined so much that we'll likely not go back. There are some significant problems with their processes. Our server didn't know he was assigned to our table so we waited for 20 minutes when I told another server that no one had come to our table. There were not many customers, but it took over an hour for our food to arrive. The chicken piccata was little kid-sized, and it was really tart from too much lemon. The jumbo crab cakes were incredibly small, and the potatoes were underdone. The salad had clearly been dressed a long time beforehand because it was soggy. The bread was cold and stale. Four of us had dinner at the Norwell location last night. We'd dined there previously with a group of six and the food and service had been satisfying enough for us to come back. That turned out to be a mistake. Three of us ordered the fish and chips and one ordered a burger. Our server was very pleasant and efficient. When our dinners arrived one look at our plates told us the fish was underdone. The coating was very pale and soft rather than browned and crispy. The fish was almost raw and actually red and pink in places. Our server promptly took our orders for new dinners and was very apologetic. The new dinners (caesar with chicken, BBQ meatloaf sandwich) were very good. Then the bill arrived. As promised by our server, we were not charged for our dinners by way of compensation for the misfire with the fish. We were only charged for our drinks and appetizer. I had one 9 ounce glass of Pinot Noir. The charge for that less-than-epic wine: $18.50!!!! My husband had two beers that totaled $15 so what the hell? We looked at the menu on our way out and saw that there were four options for Pinot Noir that varied from $8 to $18.50. She never asked which one I wanted and I believed I'd get the house wine. We were extremely annoyed with the server for not pointing this out but didn't think it would help matters to chastise after the dinner fiasco. We just wanted to leave. Beware - don't order the fish. Look over the wine choices carefully before ordering and make sure your server understands what you want. Lesson learned. Just a really terrible experience. read more

15 years working in restaurants and I can say this was one of the worst experiences ever. I figured Valentine's Day on a Tuesday with two parents with two kids would allow us to find a table. My wife called to see if they except reservations and the hostess said they were booked but could ask to see if they could accommodate us. We were worried it may be busy until we walked in and 2/3rds of the restaurant was empty. We frequent Joe's often at the Hyannis and Dartmouth locations due to living in Plymouth and knew how the restaurant and service is usually conducted . We were shocked at 6:45 on Valentine's Day tone greeted without their famous bread. After receiving our drinks and putting in our order we had to ask for their traditional bread service and were told they are baking more. The server, who had no sense of urgency and came to our table just a few times with dirty dishes almost every heck in ended up never getting bread during the entire meal. We had two of our regulars, the Mustard Crusted Chicken and Steak Tips were shocked with the new looks. The chicken was half breaded and lacked the traditional flavor, the steak tips were drenched in a sauce that took all the flavor from the meat itself. The mashed potatoes were disgusting. Between our two plates, we found enough giant chunks to build a whole potato. Our kids asked for the cheeseburgers from the kids menu. Naturally, if given the option, they ask for medium rare for steak and burgers. As most kids burgers, are cooked the same, we were never asked a temp. Totally understandable, for a kid's menu. However, the patty was shaped like a football and was a true medium rare color. If I were a parent who wasn't use to it, I would be upset. The shape also made it so it basically covered half of the bun. What cook puts a piece of beef on a bun and make it look so unappealing. Think of a meat egg sitting on a regular sized burger bun. We didn't want to get dessert because we just wanted to get out of there, which sucks because we got our two young guys excited for the Peanut Butter Thing. When the server got back, we asked for a container and he disappeared for almost 10 minutes. Note: he only had one other table. When he finally showed up, my wife asked, "so there was no bread available at all?" He just stared until I preceded to tell him I want half of a loaf to take home, along with the kids ice creams so they could eat in the car and and needed the check ASAP. I have bought so many loaves for annual holiday events, small get togethers and other special occasions and always receive them either wrapped in a parchment bag or covered with stretch wrap. This person thought putting half a loaf in a paper to-go bag was acceptable. This place was ridiculous. In a restaurant that has to have at least 30+ tables had 6 when we left, at least 4-5 tables still filled with dirty dishes. Not a manager was insight. No one that ever came by any of the tables (I guess touching 10-12 tables during a traditional peak time, was too much to ask for. They def prepped for Valentine's by buying balloons and other decorations, but baking enough bread or thanking the guests seems to be too much to ask for. This was my second time at this establishment and will be my last. My drink was all fruit juice so I sent it back. Three of us ordered cheeseburgers cooked medium with fries. All the burgers were well undercooked and not edible. Two of us sent it back and the third person ate around the raw burger. When we received the burgers back from the kitchen they were completely well done. The fries were terrible and barely wam to the touch and had no flavor whatsoever. While our waitress tried to be helpful, service was slow enough that we ended up missing some of our show we were seeing next door. Everything took 20 minutes to receive. I finally had to go find the waitress to see if she could expedite our change so we could leave. Our waitress also didn't offer any type of discount for the burger issue or offer a free desert. Last, as you went into the hallway to go to the restrooms, all you could smell was sewer. It was frankly overwhelming and it was mostly in the hall way vs. the actual bathroom. read more
