Dave,…read morethe bartender, basically ignored us for a good five minutes, preferring to talk to local regulars. We had to flag him down for refills on the empty glasses. His area was for only about 10 people at a quiet bar so he had to know we were sitting there with empty glasses. Then, after ordering another round of drinks, he immediately told people who entered the place that we were almost done and they could have our seats as we were leaving soon. We learned that Dave is a friend of the owner so guessing this is how the place is run. Why would we return for so-so food (spending over $200 for five people) and this type of service from the bartender?

I mention this to give credit to the female bartender who was hustling her tail off. Once seated she came over and took our drink order. THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I WILL SAY ABOUT THIS PLACE IS THERE WAS NO DRINK MENU. Our gin and tonic, brandy old fashioned, white Zinfandel, and Bloody Mary with a chaser came out extremely fast. A perch dinner, beer battered fish fry, chicken tender, and a classic burger were ordered. We waited about 20 minutes for our food to arrive. My 3 piece beer battered cod was flaky and not greasy. My husband's perch came with 2 large filets and he said he really liked it. Chicken tenders are chicken tenders and hard to mess up haha. My dad said his burger was flavorful and juicy. For all 4 of us ordering food and having alcoholic beverages, our bill came to a little over $100. The bartender thanked us for our patience since she was the only person working, but we didn't feel we ever waited a long period for anything. Will definitely be back.

I did feel a little underdressed, actually, in a sweatshirt, because this is the kind of place to take your country club grandpa. But we were seated graciously at a gorgeous oak (?) bar while we waited for a table. Pro tip: a 'sweet' old fashioned, in Wisconsin, means a splash of lemon lime soda; 'sour' means a splash of grapefruit soda. At one point my husband asked the difference between a supper club and a restaurant. There's some history there which is fun to learn but these days I think the main thing is that this menu is never going to feel the need to keep up with trends. You will not see a chickpea on this menu. Instead you will see words like "fish fry" and "schnitzel" and "market price" (other similar dishes hover around $34). We had a basket of some of the best dinner rolls ever--fresh, hot onion bread, pumpernickel, rye. Then the French onion soup (piping hot) and the rahmschnitzel--veal breaded and topped with a white wine/mushroom/cream sauce. Buttery, garlicky broccolini. Everything so fresh and so hot. Two cocktails at the bar were $12.50 and two entrees were $63.50 before tip. Frank Sinatra playing throughout the evening because obviously. Very grown up, special, delicious dinner in a historic building. I would never bring kids here--but that's just for my own enjoyment

It was all decorated in the Northwoods rustic style, the kitchen had dishes/cups/silverware/spices/coffee filters, a regular microwave, full size fridge/freezer, and regular drip coffeemaker (not some ridiculous hotel coffee maker, I hate those things). We were very lucky to get this place for a night in between reservations and were sorry we couldn't stay longer. It's just a few miles outside of town, where you can (and we did) get groceries and some terrific fish fry easily. The owners are just across the driveway and were very friendly. They have a couple of dogs - the collie came over and visited us a few times (this was 100% okay with us, my middle son *loved* having a doggy friend for a day). Oh, there's a firepit and picnic table outside, too. This place was amazing. Just a little more than a hotel room, but with space to move and the sound of a babbling brook just outside the front door.

I've been frequenting Timbers every Friday for their fish fry for the last 8+ years or so. To me,…read morethey have the best fish fry in the north woods by far, and it proves that you don't have to go to a fancy supper club to get good eats. The ambiance is a typical north woods bar, you can either eat at the bar or sit at one of the tables in their 'dining room' which houses the slot machines, dart board, and a few other games for kids. They have a wide selection of brews on tap, and have a full bar. The thing that I really love about this place is that everyone who works here is extremely nice. You can tell they love what they do, they're proud of where they live, and they have great senses of humor. Just overall great conversationalists. Now to the food, my favorite part: For appetizers, you HAVE to try their jalapeño poppers. They're the best poppers I've ever had. I believe they are coated in potato breading and they have an awesome zing to them. Never had a popper like it and I'll always compare others to the ones at Timbers. For lunch/dinner, their hamburgers are incredible as well. Super juicy smash burgers on a fluffy bun with the best French fries in the world. A perfect pick me up during snowmobile season or on a nice summer day. On Friday, this is THE spot for fish fry. My family and I have tried so many fish fry places over the year trying to find our favorite, and each time we stray we always leave disappointed wishing we would've just got Timbers instead. To me, what makes their fish fry so great is their portions are extremely generous, you get 4 pieces of fish, a handful of fries, two slices of buttered rye bread, coleslaw, tartar sauce, and a lemon wedge. The way their fish is prepared and battered is my favorite. It doesn't have that super thick, almost pancake batter like breading that tastes like a corn dog. Instead it's very lightly breaded so that it's fish forward with a nice crunch. This is just my preference, but to me, it's the best fish fry I've ever had. I genuinely love this place so much, but I must say that it's obviously super crowded and loud during the tourist seasons. If that bothers you, you can always call in a takeout order so don't like that deter you from checking this place out!
