As soon as my dogs and I walk in we are treated like family. Penny was thrilled when she saw the shape that the dogs I adopted from her were. She is generous. If you need an extra anything and she has it she has no hesitation when she just hands it to you. She knows about dog allergies. If she sees nails need cutting she just does it. Northwind is filthy and poorly managed. My healthy dog became seriously ill after boarding there. The evening I brought her home, she started vomiting and having diarrhea, so I took her to our local vet the next day. After a $700 vet bill--including an IV and medication--she finally recovered. I called Northwind to inform them, and while Penny offered to cover the vet costs, I explained that my concern was for other dogs potentially getting sick. My vet mentioned that another dog who had boarded at Northwind around the same time had come in that morning with identical symptoms. The owner was reportedly told that the dogs were given chicken as a treat. When I asked Penny about it, she denied that the dogs were given chicken. Who knows. read more

I'll admit it, my dog is spoiled. She sleeps in one of my kid's beds almost every night; we've ruined her. She's kind of high strung to begin with, so we've done her no favors. So when we have to go away, she gets all stressed out because she isn't fawned on all day and night. We have dealt with some ferocious gastrointestinal issues brought on by the stress of her not being the center of attention at some other kennels. But never at Northwind, they actually hire people to come in and give the dogs some love and attention. And my dog always comes home healthy and well adjusted... and bathed! She can get a little funky, so that last part is really appreciated. This last trip was our longest since we recued her 8 years ago and she was just as happy to be there as she is on an overnight. URGENT!!! I am not one to write negative reviews but pet owners should be aware. The SPCA of Westchester has notified our community (11/13/24) of Penny Berk's not first but SECOND arrest towards animal cruelty and neglect!! Penny, the owner has ignored and not treated 7 dogs from the Distemper Virus, amongst other issues posted throughout these reviews. Those 7 helpless animals had to be euthanized as a result from her neglect. Owners have stated that their pets have returned from this kennel sick/thin or never acting the same. PLEASE PLEASE be aware of who or where you choose to place your pets for care. MY CATS ALMOST DIED WHILE BOARDING AT NORTHWIND KENNEL. I decided to write this post because my cats had an awful, near-death experience at Northwind Kennels in December 2022. And now, I heard that Northwind Kennel/Rescue Right was inspected by the SPCA in early October 2023 due to a distemper outbreak amongst the dog population. I boarded my two cats there during Christmas 2022, for about two weeks. When I went to pick them up, the girl at the desk who went to the back room to get my cats came back and said that she was unable to get them into their carrier. She asked me to go to the back with her, which I did. What I saw was absolutely horrendous. The room that they were in was filthy, there were dozens of cats roaming around, there was litter everywhere, and I did not see any food or water. It did not appear that the cats in the room were resting or playing contently. They seemed agitated. Against the wall were cages, most of which were empty. The cages on the bottom row had their doors open so the cats could go in and out freely. I found my cats at the back of these cages, frail and barely moving. I gently picked them up, put them into their carrier, paid the bill and left. When I got home and could examine them more closely, they both had runny eyes and noses, and were wheezing. One cat was skin and bones and almost dead. I immediately called my vet and brought the cats to her, thinking that I was going to have to euthanize the skinny one. The vet said that they both had a severe respiratory infection and they had both lost a significant amount of weight. The skinny cat lost roughly half of her body weight while boarding. The vet advised medication and kitten food for both of them (even though they are 12 years old) multiple times per day so that they could gain back some of their weight. I called Northwind Kennel and spoke to Penny, the owner. I told her what happened and she acted surprised, but immediately offered to pay the vet bill of $865. She Venmo'd me that day and didn't ask a lot of questions. I believe that my cats were either not fed and lacked access to water while boarding, or that the conditions in the boarding room traumatized them and they were too terrified to come out of the back of the cage to eat. Either way, clearly nobody was looking out for the welfare of my cats during this time. There is simply no way that a cat can lose half of her body weight with nobody noticing in a well-managed facility. Had anyone been paying attention, I would have expected a phone call during their boarding period to let me know that my cats were ill or not eating. I was utterly shocked when I saw their condition upon picking them up. If you care about your pets, don't bring them to Northwind Kennels. read more

Penny has loaded herself with way too many pets than she knows what to do with. The pets you see on their social media are only the ones that came to them perfectly healthy and got adopted within a week or two. As someone who works in vet med, I saw the many other pets that she wouldn't even allow to get a chance. The ones covered in dirt and feces, the ones who didn't get to be looking lifeless overnight, the ones who had to say goodbye to their families through a phone call, the ones their volunteers never knew about until they found them in some back room.. I urge ANYONE adopting from ANY rescue to please do your research on the people you are supporting and always take a tour of wherever you board your pets. It could save their life. read more

We adopted our dog from Rescue Right in February 2023. We were told she was healthy, spayed and heart worm negative. She was filthy, ill, heart worm positive and not spayed, her adoption fee was supposed to cover these things which we paid in full plus a cash donation. False information was provided and we have had to pay a significant amount of money to get her well. This is unacceptable and irresponsible, this shelter is not one I would ever recommend and I would be concerned for the safety of the animals there if potential adopters are being duped. read more

Terrible management. They approved my application for a kitten adoption, strung me along for weeks saying the kitten was too young to be adopted. Finally when I called to check on the kitten they told me the kitten was given away to another family. The person I spoke to promised to find me another kitten and call me back but he didn't even ask me for my name or my phone number. My 7 year old is still crying. read more

Do not bring your pets here. While I have not boarded my dogs here. I have adopted a pup from a rescue group, which uses their services to board their dogs while trying to find them a home, one of which was savagely killed at their facility recently. After hearing the story, I felt I had to write a warning on their yelp page. I spent seven years working at a boarding facility, called the New York Dog Spa and Hotel. As a shift manager, I would never have handled such a terrible situation so carelessly. To not notify a client of such a situation for five hours is completely inexcusable and this place should not be in business. Please, don't bring your pets here. read more

We boarded our 5 month old German shorthair pointer over the Christmas vacation with Northwind. A GSP is a very energetic dog that needs lots of attention and excercise. We couldn't be happier. When we picked up Salvador he was obviously happy, in a good mood and well taken care of. The staff is really friendly and do their best to run this place where demand is much bigger than resources due to the fact that they also run a dog rescue. We visited lots of other dogboarding facilities where the dogs are offered their own room with a TV etc... but their staff doesn't even know what breed it is or what they need. We were looking for a place where staff is knowledgable and cares about the animals needs, not the fake commercial corporate BS that makes you believe a dog needs to be locked up with a TV all day! The people at Northwind understand that and they spend extra time with the animal if he/she needs it and the dogs can do outside. We will certainly be using their services again and we are sincerely grateful for their help (and to add: at a very reasonable price). A BIG BIG thank you. read more

Northwind Kennels and Rescue Right are a God send and so is the owner and staff members. I adopted a special needs dog from them last December. My extra large furry baby had been in their care for over a year. They cared enough to only allow us to foster him to make sure we were the right family for our furry baby before they approved the adoption. He loves visiting them. As soon as we get in their driveway our extra large furry baby is thrilled and can't wait to get out of the car because he knows he is going to a place he was and still is very much loved. We board him at Northwind Kennels anytime we go out of town. Our darling always comes back to us looking and smelling great. Their staff are beautifully kind, gentle and I will add highly respectful. Last week I personally witnessed how professional they can be while being extremely abused by a client and hopefully an ex-client because she should be banned. As I was waiting for my furry baby in the lobby a belligerent woman was throwing a profanity laced tirade at the front desk staff after her credit card declined. The front desk staff handled it with such restraint and respect that it left me shocked because NO ONE should tolerate that type of abuse and violence. I feared for their safety and even my own after she came back inside a second time for round two and when she left again she was still having a verbally laced episode in the driveway followed by startling loud violent screams. The staff did not let me leave the lobby until they saw the woman had left the property. The customer is not always right especially in this case. Her dog looked clean, nice and plump. I felt terrible for the elderly dog because as he brushed up on my legs for comfort while his violent mom was losing it she yanked him away with brute force twice as she kept spewing her abuse at the front desk. Very concerning behavior for a pet owner. All in all Northwind Kennels-Rescue Right are amazing and I highly recommend them to anyone looking to make a charitable end of year contribution, to adopt a pet or board their furry family member read more

I can say with unwavering conviction that Northwind Kennels/Rescue Right - having recently adopted an amazing cat from them - that I would strongly recommend them to anyone in Fairfield/Westchester County looking to add a new wonderful animal to their family. Not only are they staffed by incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable individuals, it is abundantly clear from the start that the animals in their care are both extremely healthy and happy. The act of adopting an animal is a very delicate one. Ideally one in which the animals are adopting their new family every bit as much as we are adopting them. Northwind/Rescue Right achieves a remarkable balance of the two, in addition to theirs being a no-kill sanctuary. I would also be remiss if I did not mention specifically the efforts of Penny and Bob in regards to the cats in their care. Penny was a pleasure to work with throughout the adoption process, and undoubtedly was someone whom had a true expertise with felines only matched by her passion. Bob is also clearly someone my family and I owe a singular gratitude towards, as he (among the others clearly involved) who saw to the personal care of our absolutely amazing new cat. To receive a letter written in his own hand, among the other requisite documents from adoption, providing us with his longterm knowledge of the cat was extremely helpful and touching. Northwind Kennels, Penny and team are so wonderful, loving and caring to all animals, and we are so thankful for their attention and love for our pup Hennessy. Hennessy was sheltered by Northwind for 3 years when a foster or adoptive family could not be found, and now we take him back for boarding when we are out of town. He is not nervous about going back, and loves the staff and volunteers there! They love Hennessy like their own. In fact, most recently when I went to pick Hen up from NWK, I saw one of their team members who recognized me, and told me he had just been hanging out with Hennessy and had taken him outside to relax for a bit, he was sitting down in the yard relaxing with another dog when he told me that. With over 100 dogs at anytime, it means so much to me that they give the animals individual attention and care. Not just walks, but taking the time to relax and enjoy the outdoors together. It really made me feel so happy to know Hennessy had that one on one time with this particular person (who I know Hen loves)! The money you donate to or spend at Northwind helps rescue and shelter more animals! When I was last there, Penny had taken in kittens that someone had dumped, and was caring for them out of the kindness of her heart, all while talking through the care and attention she would give someone's pet who was being boarded for the first time. You can also specify any dietary restrictions, vitamins, special needs and even if you would like the animal to get a bath before they come home. We adopted Hennessy via Pound Hounds Res-Q, but Penny and Northwind had been housing Hen for 3 years to keep him off the kill list until someone could adopt him. The team, including James and Steve, allowed us to stop by in the weeks preceding the adoption to meet Hennessy (and so they could vet us to make sure we were the right family). I have been volunteering at Northwind Kennels for about two years now. I drive there from Yonkers, NY at least three times a week to take out the dogs for walks and socializing. With the help of the wonderful staff and other great volunteers I can get at least 8-9 dogs out into the yards and have them play and run around or give them extra treats. The other volunteers take dogs for walks in the woods behind the kennels. I have been appalled at some negative reviews of this kennel by people who don't know what they are talking about. It's a large kennel with many dogs and cats and it takes time to clean and sanitize the areas and I know the staff works all day long taking good care of all the animals. This is proven by the many returns of boarding dogs who come to Northwind year after year. Some stay for longer terms and are well taken care of and socialized. The owner, Penelope Smith-Berk, has a soft heart; compassion and will not flinch from rescuing a needy dog or cat. The Kennel is open for boarding or adoption 6 days a week and Sunday by special appointment. The kennel is kept clean; the dogs are well-fed and loved by the owner, staff and volunteers alike. I have been very proud to be part of the many adoptions and am always happy when I get pictures and notes from the dogs who went to a wonderful homes. read more

I am devastated to report that after leaving my client's dog at the kennel for one month, she had to be taken to the hospital due to being overmedicated. She had 3 seizures and it cost almost $2000 in bills. In addition, I brought the dog in after a thorough grooming, only to get her in filthy condition with a wound on her leg and antibiotics for the injury that took place in the kennel. I brought her with a BRAND new crate, jacket and lease. When she was picked up, they gave us a used crate, no lease. They also kept the supplies (gloves, syringes, etc) that was provided. TERRIBLE. We decided to board our cat there for a few days while on a small road trip. We dropped her off and then 3 hours later decided that we were going to leave the following day. We went to go pick her back up and she was still on the counter. In her crate, in the same spot we left her!!! No one was at the front desk and clearly no one even bothered to take her out! so we took her and left. Never got a phone call from them nothing... I guess they didn't notice that a cat was missing. Very disorganized and dirty. Not an OK place for your animal best friends. read more

I took my three dogs here to be boarded. When I got there the staff said they didn't see my reservation. They scrambled to get the "private, peaceful, safe and quiet" area ready. I insisted on seeing the space and the man that manages the private rooms took us there. The room was basically a prison. It reeked of feces and chemicals trying to cover up the stench. The room was freezing because it had a guillotine style steel door that opened up to the outside. Knowing the dogs would freeZe to death, they put a portable heater on a tiny shelf half its size above the dogs, with a cord hanging to an outlet the dogs could reach, making the room a death trap. I suppose if you have a wolf you could board your dog here, but I'm hoping you love your dog more than letting them experience this. read more

I had last minute trip for work and did not have any one to take care my two dogs. It's very had to find someone or any place that could handle my Cane Corse mastiff and my Pitbull. I got in contact with NorthWind and they were very helpful , they were able to take my two dogs with no issues. I was a bit nervous leaving them , but after I went to visit the boarding and met the workers and could not be more satisfied. The day I picked up my dogs , they were so happy and it looks like they enjoyed the 3 days they were there.. I could not be more happy and grateful for taking care of my dogs... Now I feel at ease when I have to travel , I could leave my dogs and don't have worry. To the staff thank you so much . read more

Amazing facility with caring staff and volunteers. The owner Penny goes above and beyond for every single animal there. We drive all the way from Brooklyn to board our Otis here. We know that he is in good hands and well taken care of. I couldn't imagine leaving him anywhere else. The facility is huge, clean and also has a fenced in play areas for the dogs to run. A rescue dog being boarded here was attacked and injured. The kennel owner took the dog to an emergency hospital but never notified the rescue until 5 hours later. This is unacceptable. The dog eventually died when the rescue moved it to another facility for treatment. Also, the kennel owner will not provide video of the attack. The dogs were left unsupervised and now one is dead. This whole thing was poorly handled but the refusal to provide a video is too much. Don't think this incident can't be repeated. I would never trust them with my dogs. read more

We live in New York City, and needed to board our terrier and wanted a true kennel in the country that was well maintained, and had enough room for her to romp around. we have never boarded our dog with any kennel before, but Northwind did not disappoint. If you are going away and need a place for your dog or cat to stay, this is the one. The staff will care for your pet as instructed by you. If the pet has special needs, take meds, needs exercise, it will be done. They have fenced in yards for your pet to run and play and there are trails in the woods where they can be taken for walks on a leash. If you are looking for a pet to adopt, a dog or a cat, they have them and you will have a hard time choosing just one because they have so many wonderful choices. If you love your dogs like I do mine, do not bring them to this place. I'm having a hard time giving this kennel even one star. I took my babies here to be boarded last minute and as soon as I walked in the front door, I knew I made a mistake. It's filthy, smelly, full of cats free walking around, junk every where and this is the front desk. Just awful. But I had no choice but to leave my dogs as I was in a bind. I called every day, for 4 days, to check up on my dogs and NO ONE CALLED ME BACK to let me know they were ok. This is unacceptable. I never complain about things or have ever written a negative review but I just couldn't let this one go. My dogs were a mess when they got home. I'm still shaking. read more

I have no clue with this other reviewer is talking about. Seriously, she must have taken her dog somewhere else. This kennel is far superior to anywhere I have ever taken my dog. This is the DISNEYWORLD OF BOARDING KENNELS!!! My dog has been boarded there on 3 different occasions and once we pulled in the driveway her tail started wagging and her body wiggling to the thought of going to Doggie Disneyworld. She happily trotted up the stairs and was treated like royalty by the staff. The smooching and petting that was going on was like none other. My dog was treated better than Leona Hemsley's dog and happy and healthy everytime I pick her up. I highly recommended this establishment leaps and bounds above all others! read more
