When a company tells you it will take 24 hrs to get back to you regarding your inquiry on establishing a new service, that is an indicator you are already not a priority. Thanks, NorthStar, for making my decision that much easier to go with your competitor. UPDATE: So, does that mean you didn't bother reading my response to you (see screen shot of image I just uploaded from my reply immediately back to you). Again, you have proved my point. Maybe your reps are tied up bc they're in the phone trying to respond to all the negative customer service reviews, like mine. It took you *2 weeks* to respond and accuse me of "not responding" to you when I did so within hours. Nice. Second Update: I see Martha has retracted her comment to me on my review (hence what my first Update spoke to....now it doesn't make sense, but you get the picture of what happened). More proof this company doesn't "have it together." I strongly encourage those looking for a security system to look elsewhere, or at least do your research before committing to North Star. I'm writing this on a day that my neighborhood just went nuts because we had some door-to-door supposed alarm company sales people going around. I called NorthStar, my security company, to see if they'd ever heard of these guys and they told me that "reputable firms don't go door to door." That reminded me that I was overdue for writing them a review. My husband and I (well, my husband mostly), interviewed four or five firms before selecting this one. Their installers are also their sales guys. In other words, these are people who know their stuff. Nobody tried to sell us something we didn't need. The guy who came out - and followed us through some installation difficulties (way our house was built, not NorthStar's fault) - his name is Gary. He is friendly and SUPER knowledgeable. He explained things and then explained them again and gave my engineer-husband all the detail he wanted. But when I had a question and DIDN'T want the detail - he boiled it down for me. Their pricing was similar to other firms we talked with. Pay for the equipment and have lower monthly monitoring, or do a 3-yr contract with higher monthly monitoring and lower/no equipment costs. They give you several options to work with your budget. Bottom line is, they weren't significantly higher or lower than anybody else. We had our first "false alarm" the other day. Our nanny accidentally set off the alarm and while she was punching the code in downstairs, my husband was also punching it in on the keypad upstairs, which cancelled the whole thing. Kinda funny actually. The monitoring service called us WITHIN TWO MINUTES. I was glad to know they were on the ball just in case we need them for real some day. In the end, we went with this firm because they were the most knowledgeable, didn't have pushy sales people, so we felt confident we were getting the info we needed to make a good decision. We spent a lot of time researching camera systems and installation companies - my boyfriend even purchased an outdoor system with IR night vision from Amazon (we were gonna DIY it). Our neighborhood near EAV is awesome but we have had several break-ins occur nearby, and we wanted to be "proactive." TJ came out and took a look at our house and gave us an idea on how many cameras we would need to get a good visual perimeter on our house. Our house is rectangular, so we decided on 4 cameras in total, with a 500 GB DVR, that would allow us to back up the live footage for approx. 2 weeks. We asked him about the cameras we had purchased from Amazon and he said they were good cameras. He then showed us some live feeds from some of the cameras NorthStar had installed for several commercial properties - we had read many many many reviews on Amazon about the DIY camera systems (we researched for months) and looked at plenty of photos of footage. The footage from NorthStar's cameras was FAR superior. Read: crystal clear. We were sold, and returned the DIY set to Amazon. Since we had just moved in, we wanted to unpack first. So we booked our install date for a month later and slept uneasy for a few weeks... On install day, Jay, our installation technician, called that morning to let us know he was on the way. When he arrived, he immediately set to work installing our cameras. This involved crawling around in our super low-pitch attic, squeezing into very small, dark spaces, undoubtedly inhaling the insulation and god knows what else. Bless you, Jay. It took the better part of a day to get it done, but when it was over, the cameras were seamlessly installed into the undersides of the eaves of our roof, giving us a perfect video perimeter around our house. Beautiful work. TJ even came out and helped us set up the software so we could pull up the live feed on our iPhones, iPad, and laptop. I felt like a kid on Christmas Day - the picture was so clear. TJ and Jay then cleaned up, packed up and were gone like they had never even been there - angels maybe? After what happened later that night, I am starting to wonder if NorthStar could possess some sort of endorsement from a higher power. I am not a religious person at all, so I can't be sure, but.... That SAME NIGHT, while my boyfriend was at work and I was home alone, someone rang my doorbell at midnight. My two pit bulls immediately lost it. I was quite groggy and stumbled to look out the window. I didn't even have time to put my glasses on - all I could see was a car backed into my driveway. The doorbell rang again and I scrambled to find my phone to see if maybe a friend had texted me to let me know they were stopping by - all the while, my dogs were going crazy (I am quite sure the "visitors" heard my loud, angry dogs, but were undeterred). Next thing I know, the car pulls out of the driveway as I'm in the process of pulling up the camera feed on my phone...I was still trying to figure out what had just happened. I grab my laptop and playback the saved footage and freak out - I can see, plain as day, 3 teens getting out of their car and making their way to the back of my house. Then, as the motion light flashes on at my backdoor, something spooks them and they run to their car and pull off. My heart jumped into my throat and I called the police. I immediately clip the important part of the footage from cameras 3 & 4 and burn it to a CD. I was able to give copies of this footage to the police. A few weeks later, the police call us to let us know that they were able to use the footage to ID the vehicle and then ID the owner and put one of the perps in jail. Umm really??! We felt a little like superheros, especially because these guys had been implicated in several other crimes in our neighborhood. SCORE. However, we also knew we wouldn't have experienced this small victory without our friends TJ and Jay at NorthStar. I really can't say enough wonderful things about NorthStar's cameras, installation services, and customer service. Even now, almost 2 months after we've had them installed, we emailed TJ with a question regarding the cameras and he was able to help us. On a Saturday, no less. If I only had one wish for Christmas it would be that all my customer service interactions could be as stress-free and pleasant as they have been with NorthStar Security. Seems I can't even call the gas company these days without invoking some sort of heartburn. But yeah, if you're looking for security, peace of mind, and a truly pleasant, customer service experience, please please call NorthStar. Many thanks to NorthStar!! read more

I agree with Lauren B. I called yesterday and spoke with Barbara asking for somebody to help me with a security system. She told me that somebody would call"today" when I called at 8AM. At 4 PM I called back after not receiving a call. Barbara told me that one of their technicians would call within 24 hours. It is now 36 hours and still no call. Moving on!!! read more

These guys are GREAT! In an industry filled with empty promises and companies trying to give you less for more money, it was refreshing to do business with Gary and his team. They followed up when they said they would, communication was always timely and efficient and the tech was very knowledgeable (and also timely). The work was done with great care and attention to details, and the tech went out of his way to make sure that everything worked the way it was supposed to AND in the manner I wanted it to work. He also ensured we knew all that we needed to know about the system before leaving. I felt very confident in the company from the first time I called them, right up to and through installation. We purchased our house in July 2016, I did a little research and came across Northstar Security in a few home contractor resources. I thought I'd give them a try since we've used 2 different large home security system providers in our previous home. TJ & the installation team did a fine job. Then in about 3 months the problems start, "long range radio not responding" it happened at least 3 times over the course of a year. Recently (over a weekend) the "long range radio" and "low battery" warnings appeared for the second or third time. This time, the tech Mike told me to go a local battery store and purchase new batteries for the system. Martha followed up documenting the event, scheduled a tech to come to the house and submitted an invoice with less than 1/2 reimbursement for only 1 battery. I emailed /submitted the receipt for both batteries and insisted that they pay the full amount for both batteries since the system is a year old and the battery store employee told me that the recharge batteries are 8 years old (as he pointed to the date on the bottom of the large batteries). Plus the battery store employee stated a new battery should last 5-7 years. A day later I get a very long email form Gary at Northstar with a very skeptical tone - almost accusatory as if I would be making up a false story just to get something for free. After a year of unreliable service and now attitude from Gary, I am serious considering looking for a new security provider. ----- UPDATE: Since posting my review, Gary @ Northstar has stepped up and is reimbursing me the full retail cost for the replacement batteries as well as upgraded my wireless cell module from AT&T to Verizon since there have been many complaints that the AT&T radio/module is unreliable loses communication. read more

North Star will install your system but SWITCH you to another company for monitoring. Not local monitoring but in Oklahoma. Takes entirely TOO long for them to respond to a false alarm. read more
