Chef Metin is super nice! We needed a cake for my husband's birthday and I wanted to get something a little more unique than a Costco cake. Looked on Yelp and saw Northstar's 5 star reviews and figured this would be a good opportunity to check it out. Great communication--Chef is fast at replying and he's super friendly in his emails. You can tell he is a happy and caring guy just based on his written responses. He also offers delivery for a small charge. I think we paid $20 which was worth it so I didn't have to worry about picking up a cake amidst a very busy schedule. Our cake was priced at $4-5/slice. Not cheap but it was reasonable. We got one mango and one strawberry. I sent photos of the theme we were going for, which was a Hawaiian theme. I wanted the cakes to look like a Hawaiian shirt. On the day of the event, Chef Metin delivered the cakes with a smile. I learned he used to be in the tech industry (I think he was a software engineer?) but now he does baking full time, which started out as a hobby. How fun! The cakes tasted great. We even had a few guests asking where we got them, to which we told them about Northstar Baking. My only area of improvement would be the look of the cakes. They didn't look like Hawaiian shirts and the color was a strange purplish-gray, which looked a little odd (though it doesn't look too bad in my photo). But I probably should have communicated a theme color or discussed the look better. But other than that, it was a unique cake and the guests were happy. Would definitely recommend Northstar and Chef Metin to friends and family! read more

It is a delight to work with Chef Metin on my son's carrot birthday cake. After finding out my son does not care for cream cheese, Chef Metin suggested to use Belgian chocolate ganache. The cake turns out amazing. My son likes it. He gave it 5/5. His comments: Not very sweet. Uniform texture is great. Carrots are grated very nicely. You can actually taste the carrots. Nuts are very fresh. Nice layering. Alternate pecan and white chocolate with yellow cream de patisserie. Our whole family loved the cake. No very sweet, and everything from the cake to the ganache are so light and fresh. We also ordered some pastries. Including fruit puffs (apple, lemon, mixed berries), cannolis, and chocolate cupcakes. Some family members really liked the puffs. One thought the cream cheese could be a bit less. One doesn't care for cream cheese. If you love cream cheese and light flaky pastries (like me), I highly recommend this. The cannolis are great. The chocolate cupcakes are very soft, and the ganache is very light. You can tell by now that not very sweet, light, and fresh is the theme/specialty of Chef Metin's cakes and pastries. I also cannot say enough of the great customer service that Chef provided. He goes above and beyond to design a cake according to his customer's request. He cares about customer satisfaction. Wow, where do I event start! I ordered a German chocolate cake for my mom's 60th Birthday! She is ver particular about her sweets and especially her cakes. Northstar Baking did such a phenomenal job on this cake, from the texture to taste it was simply amazing. My husband who doesn't like sweets even tried and was impressed with the flavor. I've been Keto for 2 months now and once in a while want something sweet- like a dessert sweet! In the East Bay, I have yet to find a bakery that carries Keto friendly desserts. Today, I was visiting my sister in Roseville and saw a post about a bakery trying out Keto desserts. Got right into my sister's car and drove out there. It's a small "hole in the wall" shop- we missed it the first time around. Upon entering- I walked almost straight into where the desserts are made- it's a quaint place. The man who does the baking asked if I needed help and I let him know that I wanted to try out his Keto friendly desserts. He had 7 cupcakes left and I wasn't too sure what the cupcake would taste like, so asked for three. I didn't even think- duh- buy one, taste it, and if I like it THEN buy more- that way I'm not stuck with yucky tasting desserts! Anywhos- the owner then cut me a piece of cupcake and it was DELICIOUS!!!!!!! So amazingly yummy!!! No taste of fake sugar- and just the right sweetness. LOVED IT! I asked how many net carbs and found out - 2 per cupcake- not bad at all. I took the rest of the cupcakes left in the window case!! $2.75 a cupcake. He gave my the one I tried for free and I paid for 6- $16.00- so less than the $2.75 per cupcake. Very nice man- wish I would have asked his name. I stopped in and a baklava and a lemon tart with fruit on it. Both were absolutely delicious. In depth review of the pastries below. The baklava is well baked to a wonderful golden brown with delicate crispiness on top. The bottom was think with honey but not soggy or dripping--just right. The nut mixture filling was well spiced: present but not overpowering. Combined, the balance was excellent. The lemon filling of the tart was great consistency with a well balanced sweet and tartness and was wonderfully rich. It had both traditional and chocolate whipped cream on it that paired great especially with the the fruit on top which was fresh and delicious too. The tart crust (cup? not sure what it's called) had good crunch that was not too hard and not so delicate that it crumbled when biting. A really well done tart. Add on top that the baker is a very happy, funny man who is a joy to talk to and I'll be stopping by here to try more of his creations from now on. read more

I ordered a German chocolate cake for my adult son's birthday at his request. I was quoted $50 for cake when I ordered by telephone. I hesitated a little at paying that much for a small cake, but went ahead and ordered it. When I arrived to pick it up, I was told it was now $60. I just paid it because I didn't want to question his pricing in front of other customers (it's a very small store front). My error, I should have though. When I was slicing the cake to serve it, I had to slice thru literally 1/2" of chocolate ganache on the perimeter of the cake. No one at the party ate the ganache. It did not taste good, and they all left the huge chunk on their plates. Very disappointing and embarrassing. I wish I had taken a picture to post. I haven't lived very long in this area, but long enough now to have found much other European bakeries in the surrounding area, and they all charge considerably less and provide excellent quality. January 22th - Mr. Metin E. I posted my review on 1/15/19, which was only my opinion of the cake I purchased. Since my review, you have changed your comment to this review 42 times...Yowzah! The things I appreciated the most were their selection; willingness to make more when they didn't quite have enough for me; and I was able to text Metin and put an order in out of the blue which was waiting for me exactly as I asked the following morning. Get here early enough and you will be rewarded! My mom and I stopped by for the first time to grab a bakery treat, and the owner, Metin, was an absolute pleasure to chat with. You can tell that he is proud of his craft and wants to share it with everyone he can. We got there later in the day, so he took the time to tell us that everything is baked same-day and with high quality ingredients, so volume is small, but incredibly fresh and delicious. Next time, if we get there earlier, we could expect eclairs, creme puffs, chocolate cups, savory wraps, and more. It all sounded delicious! While my mom and I love dessert, we want richness; not sugary-sweet treats, so we chose to get a fruit puff pastry with creme de patisserie - it was AMAZING! The fruit was fresh, the creme wasn't sickly sweet, the puff pastry was light and not stale at all. We were so impressed. We also tried a spinach and feta wrap that was equally delicious; light, crispy, and full of flavor. Because we were so amazed by this little bakery next to a gas station, I didn't even think to take a photo! But we will most certainly be back.
