In mid January I booked the Easter Egg Plunge at North Shore YMCA for my 11 year old daughter from 10 am to 11:30 am. There was another available at 8 am for reservation, but we booked 10 am. We were so excited to book this. I put it on my calendar right away. We spoke about it for months. Well, we showed up this morning at 9:50 and found out it was rescheduled for 1:15 and 3:15. We had plans for 1 pm. We thought maybe we could make 3:15. Nope. We can't. My daughter is crying and upset. This was the only Easter activity I booked her, and you failed to communicate any changes in the schedule. I am bummed and disappointed in your facility. I've never experienced this at any other locations. We also wasted our gas driving from south Bellevue. I just hate seeing my kid upset. This was really unprofessional and unnecessary. read more

Review for parents: I've been a member of many gyms before and after kids. Some have "childcare" or just a place to leave your child while you workout. The YMCA does a great job for parents and kids. Not only do they have childcare but they have lots of fun activities for them to do. You also get discounted member rates for extracurricular activities. We signed our son up for parkour and he absolutely loves it. The pool is very nice at around 83 degrees and the hot tub is very nice to relax in after a good workout. They have different times for lap swim and recreational swim. My kids love the pool and they provide flotation devices for them as well. The group exercises are great and you can always drop your kid/s off at the adventure zone before your workout. I highly recommend the Y for families as there are a lot of activities for kids to do. I only wish I could have had both my kids in the same room, but they're in different age groups and can only be in the adventure zone at certain times and days. The facility itself is well maintained. Most of the gym goers are nice folks. However, the kind of subtle racism against non-White members were felt every time I stepped foot onto this campus. The Kids' Corner staff are impatient and not friendly toward families who just recently joined. They neglect young toddlers who are having a rough time adjusting. Instead of helping with transition, they tend to kids who are clearly fine playing on their own. This has happened a handful of time since I joined. read more

The staff are friendly and willing to help, it meets our needs because they offer kids club and that you can reserve the adventure zone for your family (and just your family). Time to update this review. I've been bringing my kids and many visitors here for over 3 years. Is it perfect? NO. Far from it - but I continue to rate it highly because any problems we've encountered have been addressed with empathy, professionalism, and care. CHILD CARE CHILD CARE CHILD CARE! I can't say it enough. This program is absolutely amazing and higher quality than some of the private preschools in the area. The staff learns the kids (and parents!) names. They practice exceptional behavior management protocol for all things from separation anxiety, to toy squabbles, to temper tantrums. Kids can play for up to 2 hours while parents stay on site. Equipment is updated regularly. There are LOTS of machines. For awhile I was waiting for an elliptical at busy times.... then one day, they tripled in number. The staff pays attention to these kinds of details. Its awesome. There is a highly diverse community at this facility. This is a safe place for everyone regardless of race, age, ability, sexual orientation, religion, etc. etc. etc. I love bringing my children to such a place where they can interact with people from all different walks of life. The pool at this location is large and my children enjoy it - but it is not as great for swimming lessons, particularly preschool as other locations. Memberships allow entry to all YMCA facilities in Washington. There are many awesome classes. I'm personally not always organized enough to make it to the ones I'm interested in - but when I do, its glorious. Lots of equipment for those of us not organized to get out of the house with 3 kids AND a yoga mat. The classes are for all ages and abilities from toddlers to older active adults. On that note, over the years we've tried a number of registered programs and not all of them are good. I won't go on about personal experiences here because voicing my concerns and frustrations in person has been received effectively. I will say however, that although the staff is responsive and sympathetic, there often isn't anything they can do. We have been mostly unimpressed by the day camp offered by the Northshore Y. The program is merely average, the kids don't go on many field trips, they only go outside once a day, and the teacher to kid ratios are at the state's maximum. No academic or reading program is provided. It costs $175 a week which sounds cheap until you figure in the cost of providing your kid's lunch (and the hassle of having to get a lunch together every day). Compared to Newport Children's School's day camp, http://www.yelp.com/biz/LlozMud3FevLoJM88Md9lw?hrid=q0uNfEJJN1CT_PBeffhu7w the Y looks even worse. For $820 a month ($80 more than the Y) the kids at Newport get a nutritious lunch every day (always including fresh fruit and vegetables, which all kids must take) and 10 field trips a month, to awesome places like Whidbey Island, Wild Waves, Olympia, the Museum of Flight, and to local lake beaches about once a week. The teacher to kid ratio there is much better than the Y's (for six year olds, instead of the state-allowed 15:1 it's only 8:1 at NCS). The most annoying thing about the Y is their record-keeping system. None of it's on the computer; to see if there's space for a particular day, they literally have to find the right clipboard and flip through the sheets. What a nightmare! They made a huge big deal about turning in the registration paperwork quickly, and then they lost it. That means that they don't have emergency contact information or any of the rest of it for our kid.... at least until they find those pieces of paper. read more

Update 4/16/19: I've been coming to the Northshore Y here and there for a while now and I must update my review. Mainly I will address the Cons I initially listed. When I first started going some of the cardio machines were slightly older than the ones I was used to at the Downtown Y (my "home" gym). Now Northshore has updated cardio equipment and some that my gym doesn't have (like the new stair steppers!). There are a lot of cardio options, but I've never been during peak hours, so it might get filled up pretty quickly. While the free weight section is still pretty small, they did add another rack at the entrance of the room, which is nice. And TBH, when I'm coming to the Northshore Y, I lift and leave, so not having a sauna isn't even a thing. I'm looking forward to some of the camps they offer once my daughter is a little older. Original review: I just joined the Downtown Seattle YMCA, but have used one of my guest passes to workout at the Northshore Y as it is closer to my house. Pros: +Clean facility +Childcare? Although I think that's reserved for family memberships and I only have a single membership. Waa! I would come more if that's an option. Is it? For a single membership? +Wasn't too busy when I came at around 10a on a weekday (though I can imagine it getting pretty busy and having to wait for machines, etc. at peak times - not a lot of equipment) +Friendly, helpful staff +No one appears to be transient and using this as their hygiene headquarters (like the Downtown SEA Y) +Towels provided +Lots of parking +Close to home Cons: -Older machines (not ancient, but older) -Not a lot of equipment, could get busy and need to wait for machines during peak time -No sauna or steam room, waa! We have been members for close to 27 years and watched things get progressively more political. When I work out I don't want to be confronted with politics or social justice issues on either side. Working out, sports and recreation should be a break from the noise of the world. The final straw has been the central phone system. I literally live less than a mile from the YMCA and I could walk there faster than it takes to get a call thru to "Headquarters". Absolutely horrible idea. This is the antithesis of the local, family and community centered YMCA of old. Those original values should be resurrected and put back in place. There are too many other options these days. I hope management wakes up to this before the Y becomes obsolete. I know there are very lovely people that work there. I have made many friends over the years but a real friend tells it like it is. read more

Unless you have a child, this place sucks. I can see the appeal for those who have children for daycare purposes, and children's programs. It seems like it is really good in that aspect, and a lot of people use it for that reason. Unfortunately, for everyone else who needs a nice sized gym with up-to-date equipment, this Y falls short. The cardio room is large, and has a good amount of equipment, but it's always been very packed, unless I go at 6 am. The weight machines in the cardio room are old, and there is not a good selection. The elipticals, treadmills, and such are nice, and a lot of them have built in tv screens, but I can't help but get grossed out by all of the sweaty, grunting people in a large, but cramped room. The actual free weight room is even worse. I've never seen such a tiny, sparse, free weight room. Our old gym was about a tenth of the size of this gym, and had triple the size of a weight room, with brand new equimpent. I don't understand how it costs $80 for a couple membership, when I've been to other gyms that are way nicer for around the same price. Our old gym (retrofit) in Mountlake Terrace was small, had pretty much no extra amenities, but was clean, and had a better weight room and selection of weight machines for half of the membership cost. As Of now I don't recommend YMCA. I registered without realizing that their hours are significantly reduced post pandemic and still they say they don't know if they go back to normal hours (as of 2/26/2021). I can work out early in the morning or late in evening and neither are available anymore. On weekend they close at 3pm. So I pay for my whole family and we get to go every Saturday mid morning for an hour of basketball with kids. I can pay just a bit more for the private clubs that take the whole family and get all hours plus tennis courts, steam and dry sauna and even driving range and some areas. I won't be staying if this doesn't change within a month. read more

I work in Bothell about 2 minutes from this facility, so I find myself going here quite a bit during my lunch break or after work. This facility is pretty great. There are lots of cardio machines including treadmills, elliptical machines, and lots of stationary bikes -- no stair masters, though. Also, there is a huge gym for basketball and an Olympic-sized lap pool. Also two racquetball courts. Really, it's all in all pretty decent. The weight room is satisfactory: it's split into 3 different rooms, however. A lot of the machines are in with the cardio machines, and the free weights are in their own separate room. But you can definitely get your workout done here. The locker rooms are big and comfortable with all the YMCA amenities: towel service and the like. read more

Nice gym for all kinds of folks. Not a membership up-sell scam like another one I looked at. Lots of basketball area - a big double one and a full size family court. Aerobics group uses one or the other at times. Great cardio gym and a smaller resistance gym too. Weight room is fine. Pool has too much chemical for me personally, bit is top notch! Sure, Northshore YMCA isn't a fancy gym, but it does offer a great place to work out, swim, take classes etc. What I like about the Northshore YMCA is that they offer a variety of different programs for kids, teenagers, and adults; and there are always staff members around if you have any questions. The one thing I love about this YMCA is that you can take all of the classes you want if you have a membership. I frequently take pilates classes here and the instructors are extremely knowledgeable, and give great classes. I would rather take classes here than spend $10-15 on a class elsewhere. read more

Its really too bad that after years of supporting the Northshore Y to have such bad customer service and misrepresentation of the sports camps. Obviously, working with a 3rd party is the excuse. The team ( Samantha Porter) needs more customer service training in how to handle adversity and acknowledge valid parent concerns vs. interrupting and providing argumentative feedback that escalated my concerns. Sometimes it is best just to listen and look constructively at the situation. I'm new to the area and needed to find a nice place to go and workout. Recently I joined the Northshore YMCA and am pleased with the staff and services offered by the Y. They have some of their equipment connected to Fitlinx (sp?) which helps me keep track of what I have done during my time there. The other thing I like about the system is that it helps me maintain a decent pace when using the strength training machines. Breath in breath out. The other day, I was walking by a Tai Chi class and sat at the door taking a look. I have always wanted to drop in on one. The instructor waved me in. Ok I'm not into any sort of martial arts. The important thing is that I had a good time and met some wonderful people in the class. They all let me stay even though I'm sure I was messing up their routine. I will be coming back and trying more of the classes. I do wish the swimming pool were a little bigger. But it's all good. read more

I'm generally a fan of the Northshore YMCA. While it's not necessarily anything to scream about, it's a nice place to work out and spend some time. The workout portions of the YMCA are divided into the Cardio/Weight Room (large), Total Health Center (small), and then the Weight Room (small). I spend the most time in the Cardio/Weight Room, then finish my workouts with a trip to the weight room. It's a cool routine. The workout machines are nice; getting newer, with the older machines aging out. TVs are attached to most every cardio machine, and the weight machines are acceptable, though slightly old. If you're looking to drop the kids off and workout, this is an okay place to do so. From what I can tell, the kids are supervised, and have other children to play with. As well, the Philips Ultrasound Room is geared more towards the junior high / high school crowd, with ping pong, foosball, and computers / xBox for the kids to use. The rates are acceptable, for an adult member, there's a $100 joining fee, and then it's $58 per month from there on. Overall, the Y's a good place to work out, or let the kids spend some time. read more

My son has gone two years in a row to their summer programs. Awesome facility and staff and they come up with some really interesting and unique NW related camps. My only thing is that some things I signed him up for had prerequisites and they are not listed on the website. The website still allows you to sign up and will take your money. So my best advice is to sign up in person to avoid the conflict. I'd have five stars otherwise. read more

What I love the most about Northshore YMCA is that it's right near my house and they have TONS of night classes (group exercise) and many gyms don't offer a lot of selection for group exercise. Also many gyms charge extra for group stuff. YMCA includes the group exercise classes in the membership. So, where their prices might not be super low like 24 hour fitness or Gold's, they make up for it by having an Olympic size swimming pool and oodles of class times. read more

We've been going about a year and a half to use the weight rooms and take Yoga classes. We go about twice a week. My daughter takes ballet and swimming classes. They have gymnastics and cooking classes that we've taken. They have a climbing tower where my daughter can climb at kiddy level and they have climbing camps where they can learn to climb. They have good values and they have integrity and honesty and it's a good community. My daughter can have friends here that aren't from her school. They do so much; while she's doing ballet, I can go work out in the weight room or cardiovascular room. It's all current and in a good state of repair. They have four TVs across the wall on different channels, and each piece of equipment has its own TV and you can put your earplugs in and listen. read more

This YMCA is swamped specially the pool. I had to get in line for almost 2 hours to register for swim lessons. I called it quits after their walmart approach to attracting new members while providing little to poor service to the existing ones didnt work with me. The prices of the swimming lessons will run you around $14-17 per lesson per kid, if you are lucky to get a spot. Non-Members--GOOD LUCK. I now have my kids in private swimming lessons and they are actually learning how to swim rather then being distracted from 50plus people in the pool at the same time. The locker rooms are horrible and need to be updated as well. read more

My family has been members at this facility for over 20 years. In general, this YMCA is a good all around facility for families and senior citizens. Over the years, this YMCA is gone distinctly downhill as follows. -Just too many people - facility is very oversubscribed, -The price of $105 for a couple per month is expensive compared to other gyms, -Routine price increases for the last 5 years or so of 5-10% a year (no changed services), -The pool and locker rooms are aging fast, -The pool runs too hot most of the time for lap swimmers and is 50% chlorine/50% water. -The shower temperature varies a lot - this is the place for you if you like cold water - :) So this place works but know what you are getting into. YMCAs never deserve a 2 so I'll give this place a 3. If you want a place to just exercise without the benefit of noisy children, overcrowded locker rooms and an aging facility, try someplace else. read more

However, let me tell you the truth - place where a kid get chance only if you are a member who is paying monthly fee. Very limited classes which usually fills with member. So I don't see this as a different one where you are not being ripped off your money. If you don't believe, try yourself. We love it here! Our son goes to the Early Learning Preschool and we are members. My three year old son loves the preschool and his teacher, he has learned so much in the past few months and his speech has improved. The staff is wonderful and highly trained - great with children! The other building has wonderful facilities - we love the pool and get quite a bit of use out of it. The children and family programs are amazing and my son is starting t-ball soon. I know there are some improvements being made to update the building and the front lobby has been revamped - which is really nice! read more

I have been going to the Northshore YMCA for two years now. It is an unpretentious place with a knowledgable staff that is blessedly unlike a meat market. Northshore YMCA bills itself as being open to people at all levels of fitness, and they really mean it--I have seen people steering walkers and wheelchairs up to the equipment and working out.
