Had a great experience at Northgate today! I was greeted with a smile by the entire staff. Shout out to the lady who helped me with my carnitas, chicken, and rice she was so incredibly sweet and thoughtful, and it felt genuinely sincere. I also want to give a shout out to the cashier who rang me up (I think her name was Nini?). I asked her about the reusable bags, and she did an amazing job explaining that they're so well made that they'll last forever, and she totally sold me on buying two! I appreciate this local Northgate Market in Long Beach as I come here to refill my 5-gallon primo water bottles, I can get marinated meats and fresh tortillas, and they do have some nicely priced gems here. They make my meal prep easy as I can get meats - cooked or uncooked - at reasonable prices. Though I appreciate their Costa Mesa location with Mercado Gonzales, this spot does have a lot of I want/need on a regular basis and I need to be coming here more often! read more

Why do I always have to wait like an hour before someone can help me? Specially at the hot bar/prepared food where they make the tortas and why do they never have milanesa if that's one of the options for the torta? Do not get custom cakes here. They messed up my three year-old daughter's cake they wrote. "Birthdav" instead of "birthday" and spelled, her name wrong when I spelled it out three times when placing the order. And the color was extremely off and they told me that the color depends on the size of the cake, WTF? And then, made it seem like it was my fault about the name, but I told them I said it three times to the employee and she wrote it down so that's not my fault. Also, when my husband went to go pick it up They told him it wasn't ready and did the entire cake in 30 minutes and rush the entire thing so it looks very sloppy. I love going there for the Mexican products I can't get at Vons or Ralphs' stores. But, whoever is in charge of making the tamales doesn't know what they are doing. Ive bought tamales from there before and it hurt to have paid nearly $4 for a dry unsavory tamale. So I decided to give it try once again, months later, same results. My first time visiting was on Thanksgiving and I was so pleasantly surprised! I've been to Northgate a couple other times in different cities and like other reviews have mentioned this place is extremely clean! The parking (albeit at 6am) seemed generous to me but keep in mind Starbucks is also in the same plaza. What really struck me was how friendly all the staff walking the floors was. Every person greeted me with a good morning which was really nice. I came primarily for the tamales and was relieved there was no line. There were plenty of options to choose from (chicken, cheese and jalapeno, beef, corn and there was also supposed to be strawberry and pineapple but they wouldn't be ready for another hour so unfortunately I couldn't attest to how they tasted. There was also a self-serve drink station with oatmeal, atole de nuez (my first time trying it and it had a TON of nuts) and champurrado. They have individual and party sizes of the drinks. They had plenty of fresh salsas and guacamole but I will advise most "medium" salsas were actually quite spicy. There also appears to be a fresh tortilla station that I'll have to check out and agua frescas, hot meals and soups. Even tho it's a bit out of the way I have a feeling I'll be back real soon! read more

Delicious Tamales, Champurado and Mulitas! Went here early today an picked up some tamales. They have 4 kinds: Pork in red sauce, Chicken in green sauce, Jalapeno and Cheese, and Corn dough similar to corn bread. Also 1 dessert tamale flavor: Pineapple. Each tamal is a pretty good size and cost 2.29 each. By 10 am the champurado was almost gone. Very think and chocolatey but not overly sweet. The also had Atole de nuez and avena. These are 7.99 for a large 32oz or 3.00 for 16 oz... a bit pricey but worth it. The mulita was made if barbacoa and it was tasty. Self serve salsa bar available. Get here early fot the drinks and tamales. They also have Menudo. The entire store is very organized and clean. Great shopping and great food. read more

The manager was the rudest person I have ever encountered. I walked a mile to give them an employees name tag I found in the park nearby. The manager or assist or whomever the man was told me I had to go to the north gate market closer to my residence as the name tag was not for this location. I said I didn't know that but this location is the closest to me. He started yelling at me that if I live on Orange & San Antonio that this location at Cherry & San Antonio is not close at all and that I was insane then he called over. security and yelled in Spanish which I don't speak, I did not take the name tag back when he handed it to me I said " not mine, I walked here to give it to you because it has a barcode on back seemed important for employee who lost it." This man turns red and lunged at me to punch me, security held him back and told me to leave, I had not been there before and didn't know they treat customers like cattle forcing them into these lines with automatic and manual gates in way of exiting. A hot food counter lady had to come unlock the gate to allow me to exit the grocery store. I've come to conclusion this asshole was overworked and maybe he works multiple locations and forgot which one he was at. Regardless someone comes in with name tag that say store name and has the bar code for employee clock in etc then why would a manager man yell at customer to take it to another location and become violent when customer says this is the closest location and I thought I was doing them and the employee a favor by returning the bar tag I found at Bixby Knolls park on San Antonio which is nearby. Then to be shouted at that I must leave so I go to exit but there's gates and I trapped, prevented from leaving. I previously never went to this market because the tv commercials are so horrible. I now never will go because I was scolded by a manager while trying to do a good deed. Maybe all the dead corpses behind this store have possessed this man. The ambiance seemed very warm and comfortably colorful with a very nice well stocked flower section near entrance & I saw some huge pastry items so if attending a funeral behind store or across street this might be a good place to go but honestly I wouldn't be caught dead supporting this store based on my experience read more

I've been to 5 different northgates. I can say this is the most clean and organized one. Customer service is always great. Maybe once the lady that makes the avocado was rude when I asked her for some guacamole with no chile. She proceeded to pack many container of the guacamole with chile and like 20 mins later she told me here's the one without chile. I had to wait since there was no containers of the guacamole without chile. That one lady is not going to make me not come back. How about flowers to take to the cemetery? Hey, there is a Northgate Market directly across the busy Cherry Street at the Del Amo intersection. We were somewhat confused about the parking lot entry and after our shopping where and how to exit. There is a Starbucks and a Ceasars pizza and a restaurant that makes it somewhat confusing. It was busy, but we found a spot kind of far from the Northgate Market entrance. We got a shopping cart just in case. Yes, this maket is a miniature version of the large Northgate Mercado in Costa Mesa. I found flowers right away, but our curiosity led us to the other departments. There is a butchershop, and I get pork spare ribs. Without realizing it, we filled our cart with grocery items that we could have done without. It was just a joy to walk the aisles and find the same price point on items we saw at the Mercado. This one also has a small food court where you can order and sit at tables. Well, we got flowers and tomatoes and chips and the round sweet breads and corn and red yams and more. Now that we know the parking situation, We will visit this Northgate Market again and try their dining and fresh juices. read more

Over the past few years I've noticed that Northgate has redesigned the interior and exterior of their markets and I think they look great. I've only been to one other location in Norwalk, but this location seemed larger in size. I liked how everything was spread out a little more. Stopped by here around 1230 noon time and there wasn't too much crowd. I'm paranoid about grocery stores these days because of the covid surge but the only time I was near another party was waiting in line to pay at the register. Northgate has so many counters /services that make it a competitive grocery store. I'm impressed of all the different food specialty counters and how clean and efficient the service was.
