Without hesitation I can give Romana Construction the highest possible ratings, as it relates to…read moretheir cement work and their team. The owners are Mike and Joe. This is a family owned business that has been around since 1957, and some of their crew members have been working with the company for 30+ years. I spoke with Mike during a visit to my Mother's home in the middle of the summer of 2018 to get an estimate done for the replacement of a driveway. Mike took the time and gave me the estimate divided up a few different ways, as I wasn't certain about doing the entire drive, or only the front half (which had cracks and leveling issues), or whether or not to do the city sidewalk blocks at personal cost. As they were booked for the summer, Mike left me with the estimate and his number if I decided to organize a date to have the work done in the fall. No pressure to sign on the bottom line. Only to let me know that they fill up their calendar early. After sitting on the estimate a month or so, I decided to move forward and schedule the work. Mike's tools on this job were the pen, paper and the tape measure, and he wanted to be clear on exactly what I wanted done so he could give me a firm bid on the job. So he came out and we discussed what needed done, what I wanted done, what the city would require if the house were to be put up for sale anytime in the future, and the costs for each option. He was generous with his time and expertise, and the estimate was very competitive. We agreed on some dates, which did take some time, as they are a very sought after business. Along came his brother, Joe. Joe is the brother that comes with the crew, the big red trucks, and all the other tools. They descended on the house like a SWAT team on the agreed morning. Joe did his own measuring, sized up the job, and directed his very experienced crew as to how to attack the job. Which they did with gusto, and without complaint the entire day. They did the front half of the drive, about 70 feet (as the back was still in good shape with no cracks), the cracked front porch, the apron, 3 city sidewalk sections, and a center strip between ours and the neighbor's drive, which we own. They did a flawless job on it all. I watched the entire process and all of my questions were answered on the spot. A few adjustments were needed on the slope, I needed a PVC pipe laid under a sidewalk section being replaced to accommodate a planned sprinkler system, and some advice/help with tuck pointing a few bricks that were adjacent to the porch that they were poring. They were able to help/accommodate all of those issues. A few days later to accommodate curing, and one of their senior crew members came back to cut the expansion lines, and got them looking great. I wish all contractors were this intelligent, honest, trustworthy and good to work with. I am planning to have some minor construction work done this year and, although I have not used them for construction, they will be the first to call for an estimate on the work. They're that good! A+++

I was looking to have Romana to install an exposed aggregate walk and front steps as well as poured concrete steps at the back of my current house. I called the Melvindale number 3 times over the past week and left a message for Mike to return my call so that I could determine the cost and schedule the work to be done. I had no intention of getting any other estimates since they did a quality job for me before. From the stamp in the concrete in my current house Romana installed the driveway and front sidewalk back in 1974 and they are still in great shape. Very disappointed that a repeat customer could not even get a return phone call to indicate that they are too busy, etc. and recommend another company to do the work.
