I signed my kids up for a week-long horse camp experience. Since it was the first time they'd be in a camp setting and with people I didn't know, I stuck around the first morning. I'm glad I did! It was blistering hot, and there was minimal shade. There were at least 40 kids ranging in age from 5 to 12. No adult was to be seen. No water available. No place to really sit down. The "leaders" were all between 14 and 17 - clearly they all knew each other and hung out in a cluster while the campers tried to figure themselves out. There were a couple of horseback rides around a ring. Then go sit down. Then the next group of kids got on and walked, then sat down. Sitting down meant sitting on a rock or dirt in the hot sun. After one hour, I took my kids and we left. Very disappointing, poorly organized, and for $600+ per student for 4 days ... a rip-off.

We arrived at Bryerly Farms and it was nothing like we expected (not a farm in the traditional sense) BUT it more than made up for it in hospitality and the majestic horses we got to meet - most of which were wild rescue horses. Anne was so warm, very patient with my daughter and her one thousand questions about farm life and she introduced us to all the beautiful horses and ponies by name! On our way home, my daughter kept saying their names and how she wants to take riding lessons with one of the ponies. The large jumping arena, the small covered dressage court and the full sized mirrored dressage court and lunging arena are groomed and watered every day, sometimes twice a day. They have an aggressive fly prevention system and haul off all manure. There are hardly any flies and you don't leave the barn covered in dust, which is rare on the west coast. When I was at Sunny Hill, most barns on their road had between 7-10 cases of pigeon fever, Sunny Hill had none. Jennifer the owner, goes above and beyond in horse care. They will even feed your horse out of a slow feeding hay bag so he can eat at a more natural rate throughout the day. Top quality care, pristine boutique facility, oh and did I mention you can ride a short distance to Mt. Diablo trails? Not bad..

We did a nice mile and a half loop, perfect length for my small dog. I got parking, but there are not many spots, so that could be an issue. I also didn't see any bathrooms, forcing me to figure out alternatives. Rolling hills, but nothing too bad. Some native plant restoration work was being done and everybody I passed by was polite and pleasant. The trails are very exposed, so I would limit my hiking here to days with more mild weather, but it wasn't busy a really nice change of scenery for me.
