Great free and fun Christmas activity to do in Brooklyn! If you're taking public transportation,…read moreit's a long commute, with D and R as the closest train lines. Between 83rd and 86th St, intersected with 11th through 13th, the Dyker Heights neighborhood are really fun to walk around and admire the lights and take photos. I came with a small cavapoo, and I was happy to help other people (mainly families) take photos in exchange for them helping me take photos with my dog. There were certain spots where there was just a bottleneck of people, and it was impossible to get through with my dog without picking him up and carrying him through the crowd. There were trucks giving out Annie's Pretzels and coffee and hot chocolate. I didn't partake in any of the food trucks, but a lot of people are really inconsiderate and leave trash on people's private properties. C'mon people, these are actual homes, do you want people treating your homes this way? A super fun walk during the Christmas holidays!

This is one of the classics. I'm going with 3 stars because there's confusion about this listing…read more Most of the reviews are for a general neighborhood phenomenon, not a particular private bus tour. The epicenter is a mile walk from the D or R trains, but the bus service from the R along 86th seems simpler. Be sure your phone is charged; you'll find an incredible assortment of photo and video opportunities. The multi-Santa Spata House at 1152 84th St. is perhaps the most famous. Some of the locals are annoyed about the traffic. No spoilers but further west on 84th there's what might be an amusing quiet protest about this event. Consider the lack of bathrooms before downing any hot chocolate or apple cider. In one post-lights trip I went to the great Chris's Polish restaurant in Bensonhurst; I reckon open-at-night options are more prevalent in Bay Ridge.

I had just explained to my son the importance of arriving early because arriving on time makes you late(he wondered why we left the hotel early though we were only a couple of blocks away from McDonalds.) The unmarked bus was parked across the street in front of the Paramount building. We were in line for a different tour who was parked in front McDonalds who informed us that we were in line for the wrong tour and pointed to the unmarked bus. We still arrived on time. I then explained to my son that situations like this is why you arrive early. I had a ton of missed calls and was contacted by email but a sign of some sort would've helped(a magnetic sign on the driver and passenger doors, or a foldable sign that can be transported on the bus) as I noticed the bus from across the street(the same side as Applebees and Ellen's Stardust Diner) but had no way of identifying it.

Dom is a great guide; knowledgable and personable with a good sense of humor. We have gone on walking and food tours previously and this is one of the best we've been on (and lowest in calorie count!). Dom focuses on the changing landscape of the neighborhood and the local manufacturing /arts movements in the area. We visited some local artisans that we NEVER would have discovered by ourselves and saw some really cool and unique items. Even though our tour only had 3 participants, Dom definitely did not skip on the tour itself as it lasted 4.5 hours. True, we ended at a local wine bar (where they grow the wine in upstate but put brooklyn artists' labels on the bottles) but it was a fantastic way to end as we were able to chat about what we saw, the neighborhood and what we saw. What made this especially so fun is that I have lived here in the NYC and Brooklyn area for more than a decade yet still learned so much about the history, the arts, architecture, bridges, about small businesses and their local products, and more from the tour! Dom did a great job of getting us thinking and answering any questions we had. He was very thorough and his information was easy to follow. Plus he had a few little treats he snuck in along the way too which was a very nice touch. Would highly recommend Dom and his tours!

You can't get this experience anywhere else on the planet. I am not the "tour type" of person, but am so glad to have experienced this one. We covered a lot of ground and knowledge during the tour. You'll get tons of photo/selfie opportunities if that's your thing. I appreciate the hustle part of this tour - it's not super polished which was cool. The host was full of energy and humor, and the driver was on the grumpy side which made the dynamic even better - a little Eric B and Rakim type of thing... Anyway if you are on the fence about this do it now - we hesitated and were lucky to get the last two seats on the tour. They also sell merch so you can get a hat or t shirt for your friend that lagged it too long and didn't get on the tour. Plus, if you bring grandma they will teach her how to bust out in a b-boy stance.
