I'm not sure if owners changed but this place is not the same. I used to come here faithfully, they had the best sourdough bread, it was chewy and flaky it was so good iykyk. The staff was always pretty friendly as well. I normally ordered a chicken sandwich on sourdough with the works, the chicken used to have a nice rotisserie flavor. However not coming in the office as much I stopped coming. I went in a few weeks ago and ordered my normal chicken sandwich on sourdough. The sourdough was not the same it wasn't chewy or even tasted like sourdough and the chicken tasted like canned chicken. A place I used to love I will not be back. The staff was also rude. read more

Unfortunately, the cashier didn't understand me and continued to ask me what kind of bread I wanted; she named the different types so I settled for whole wheat. It's in a prime location at a hub Bart station and downtown Oakland area. As you enter, you give your order to the cashier. The cashier was very friendly and quick to take our order. My coworker highly recommended the Turkey Pesto Melt for their sandwiches, so I figured I would give it a shot. The sandwich can come off as a bit sweet but also very savory. We came here on a normal weekday during lunch and there were a few customers in the shop. We bought two different types of turkey sandwiches and they were just okay. The bread wasn't anything special while the turkey was a bit dry and didn't have much flavor to it. We had hoped that we would have liked these sandwiches more but there was just not much to them - it was all very plain and just okay. Got the 8" roast beef on sourdough for $7.50 total and It's a good value and tasted good. Since Quiznos left the center and not many other sandwhich places nearby, it's a good option. I went to visit my boyfriend at his workplace, and we went out for lunch. Simple, casual date. I ordered the Las Vegas Reuben at the counter, and we waited in the back. There's lots of standing room and not many seats. Probably by design. It's best to take your food and eat on a bench outside, or back at your desk. Maybe you'll be lucky and score a table here! The sandwiches took awhile to prepare, but it was pretty worthwhile. $8.50 for an 8" sandwich was awesome, since that's about how much I can eat for lunch anyways. There are options for chips and drinks. I like how comprehensive the menu specials are, for those who want to be regulars and have multiple options. I order the Pollo Piadina, which is $5 out the door! I'm in Downtown Oakland frequently and there are not many places where you can get a decent bite to eat for $5. I usually get the Turkey sandwich with the works and add jalapeños & provolone. They can toast it or make it cold style. Portion is good. It is filling and the light pesto mayo sauce makes it tasty. I've also tried their signature roast beef and pastrami. Those are good as well. Staff are friendly and nice. Always greeted when I walk through the door. Quality here is better than Subway. There's nothing special about this place. You've got your standard sandwich shop with your standard sandwiches. Service is fast enough. My biggest gripe is the portion size of their BLT. This North Beach Deli just opened up recently in the City Center. I've never tried it out so decided to try it for lunch. I ordered a Country Wrap and made it a meal for an extra $2.95 which adds a small drink and chips. The wrap was good but nothing mind blowing for me. The dedicated sandwich shop in City Center, as Bagel Street Cafe, that soup place that I haven't been to, the Organic Coup, and probably 3 other places technically have sandwiches. I had just gotten back from Miami and was looking to snag a sandwich even though I was disappointing myself after the joy that is a PubSub (Publix Sub). With the name North Beach there was no shock that the focus was more on Italian and it shows with some of the options. But I was pretty simple and wanted turkey and ham on white with provolone, veggies, salt pepper, oil and vinegar. And they did a decent job. If you're in the area and looking for a fast, simple sandwich I can recommend this place. But if you have time to walk I'd take The Lunch Box over this. read more

I had just completed my lunchtime walk around Lake Merritt, returning to the office at just past one when I realized my typical meal of a Trader Joe's Greek Salad just didn't seem very sufficient. The first thing I noticed were the 1999-ish prices, when I saw them I was anticipating dinky little portions that would leave me wanting to go to the vending machine within an hour. Not so - I didn't have to eat until late in the evening. Regular sized pastrami sandwich: $7.50. Was it the most fantastic meal I've had in my entire life? No, but it was fulfilling. Almost zero tuna in it. Think peanut butter spread thin. I like iceberg lettuce. But I ordered a tuna sandwich, not an iceberg lettuce sandwich. Tuna is a low cost high margin item too. There are so many great sounding menu options. I was undecided between a sandwich and a salad but when with the avocado caprese salad with chicken. There was so much chicken on the salad and it was tender and well seasoned. Lots of ripe avocado and cucumbers. I ventured into North Beach Deli because I thought it would be a quick option. However, I waited at least 15 minutes for my sandwich, which kind of defeated the purpose. I got a Sinatra sandwich. The sourdough bread I got with it was toasted (I didn't request this, it just came toasted), which made the bread hard.
