I'll admit that when this store first opened, I hesitated stopping in because I thought it would be too expensive. I remember Nordstrom when I lived in Indianapolis and I never bought much at all from there except for a couple of pairs of shoes because they specialized in narrow sizes. But I digress.
Nordstrom Rack in Birmingham is a great addition to the shopping scene. Yes, it's been here for a couple of years but it's had a transformation. I visited during the first month it was open and I didn't see ANYTHING I liked and much of it was too expensive for my taste. BUT...now, not only are there some really great pieces, but a lot of brand names at "normal" prices. I think they realized that they needed to appeal to ALL shoppers.
I think the key to shopping here is to NOT go in looking for anything specific . For example, don't walk in looking for a classic white blouse because you may or may not find it. This is not like a JCP or a Belk store where you KNOW you can find a classic black suit or basic tan skirt. BUT...you will find some cool pieces that enhance your wardrobe. You can also find great accessories and makeup and perfume. Again, don't go in looking for a particular item; just be happy for those little surprises like Urban Decay lipstick for $9.97 or Neutrogena body oil.
I have learned that the key to a successful shopping trip here is to walk in with an open mind. Start with the clearance rounders first, which start at the middle of the store and go towards the back. Don't go in there if you're in a time crunch and you need just the right kind of red top for your date on the same night. You probably won't find it. But...There are racks of items for less than $30, $20 and a rack of nice tops for $16.97. Crazy! It's not hard to navigate the store and the layout is pretty simple.
And unlike discount stores like TJ MAXX or Ross or Marshall's, this store is really neat and the items aren't picked over. They have plenty of employees who work the floor and straightening up the items constantly. The "put back" rack outside of the dressing rooms rarely have more than 10 items at a time. Most stores those racks are overflowing. Again, they have enough employees to do the job.
I'm not a shopper so I can appreciate the simplicity of this store. As with most stores, the size of the men's section is average. But the choices and prices are great. And there is a small "home" section with candles, throws, kitchen items and stationary. And don't forget the purses and the underwear sections!
My only complaint is the shoe section. AWESOME shoes, but the prices are waaayyyy over the top expensive. I get that these are designer shoes that normally go for $100+. And most of the shoes are 50% off or more. But...there are some shoes, like designer flip flops, that I'm not paying $45 for! I can't!
Overall, I like this store and I never walk out empty-handed. It's all about your mindset! read more
