Came to Gus Mayer for the Margarita Sale yesterday! Free maragitas and shopping? Yes, please! One of their bigger sales of the year! They had some fun games and were giving out prizes like gift cards at the door. The woman running the cornhole game has a future in cruise ships. Gus Mayer is one of those legacy Birmingham stores that you make your lovely Grandmother take you to to shop at. They have all the nice brands and an excellent black tie gown section if you need something unique and spectacular. My favorite thing to look at here is always the shoes, expect to spend at least $200 on a pair of shoes. But, they're shoes you can't find anywhere else in town. **A note for this year (2025): they had a pair of shoes I wanted that were from Italy, and upon messaging the brand directly, I do believe I avoided some hefty tariff fees by buying the shoes IRL here. Food for thought. I don't often shop in person at all anymore (I'm a major e-bay fanatic), but being able to go in and try on different sizes is incredibly nice. I ended up getting a pair of jeans and shoes in a different size than what I would have ordered online. They have dresses anywhere from $100-$2k, with all the brands like Zimmerman, Staud, etc. They have Mother jeans and my all time fav jeans brand, Mousy -- which were 50% off yesterday!! The "doorbusters" they advertised online were not the bread and butter of what you come here for. Come to peruse. Shoes and handbags are what I recommend. I see the other reviews commenting on the friendliness of the staff... I get it. My thoughts: these are the women of Mountain Brook here to secure their employee discount. Don't hate the player... It's an expensive, high end clothing store that offers formal wear, casual clothing, perfume, jewelry, handbags, a variety of shoe styles and more. From time to time they have a great, not to be missed, sale! Who doesn't love a good bargain! My sister and I had a great time shopping their "Hot Summer Sale"! Where can you find a pair of $150.00 shoes for $39.00? At a Gus Mayer Sale! Our sales clerk was pleasant and so helpful! We had her running back and forth to the stock room to retrieve mates of shoes we wanted to try on. Through the years I have shopped Gus Mayer for that special occasion usually with success. Nice candle selection! 80% of the clothing in the store looks like it came from a consignment shop. My daughter and I walked around that store for 15 minutes today and not one person asked us if we needed help. Please, give those people some energy pills. read more

I'm a bargain shopper. That might sound like an oxymoron when one is talking about a store like GM. But what better time to purchase an expensive item than when it's on sale. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything to interest me this time or maybe I couldn't buy everything I wanted and didn't feel like selecting which one I preferred the most so I just left. I needed gifts and everything I saw where items for myself. When you want to be treated like a rock star and find beautiful clothes and shoes, GM should be your first stop. Eek, I'm shocked by the bad reviews! While I will admit that initially none of the sales team was tripping over themselves to help us, we ended up having a really fun shopping experience. Quite a few pairs of shoes in the window display drew me in and even more caught my eye once I ventured over to the shoe department. They had a really good selection of shoes that were mid-priced to high-end and they happened to be having a sale that day -- WIN! Betty was our awesome salesperson who also had the patience of a saint while we tried on everything we could pick up. She even introduced me to one of the buyers, who was from Memphis. Thirty minutes and three pairs of shoes later, I walked out extremely happy! read more

Customer service is horrible. No one greets you, and sales associates will not look at you or acknowledge you unless you approach them first. Used to love shopping here when the manager Rebecca worked here. Now I will not return after being met with snooty service every time I've walked in for a few months. read more

LOOKING FOR QUALITY AND SOMETHING UNIQUE? Of all the stores at the Summit, this is the one that caught my attention because it is simply new to me. It appeared to be a small department store and as I entered, I discovered that I am correct in that assumption. They carry women's clothing, accessories and make-up. Of course I go straight to the shoes. They had a really cute selection of shoes but I was looking for something very specific, (black leather slide with a 2 inch heel). The ladies in the store were very welcoming and I actually enjoyed being able to freely browse. For shoes that are of great quality, and not like every other pair you see, Gus Mayer is your store. read more

I wasn't impressed. The staff did not greet us when we came in, were very rude and no one offered assistance. The clothes were great high-end brands but wasn't the right apparel for the hot season. I'm torn on this review because they have such a nice selection of items that I would love to give them a 4/5 stars. BUT out of the all the times I've every visited the store I've only felt welcome 1 time. (And I was dressed appropriately and I'm a smiling friendly person.) The only time I felt so welcome there was a tall beautiful young lady with long dark behind the first counter that gave me a HUGE welcoming smile. (I should have gotten her name but I was on a mission that day) Then Betty in the shoe department also made me feel welcomed. I would have stayed to shop but the I was actually there to return a Longchamp bag I had purchased because I got the same bag for my b-day a few days later. And the shoe dept. was too full of shoppers for me to enjoy trying on shoes that day. I will go back after calling to see if Betty is working. For a store that has higher-end items I'm baffled on why they sales associates always seem so "snooty". FYI: Saks has never made me feel like I shouldn't be in the store. read more

I absolutely love Gus Mayer! I recently moved to Atlanta, GA, but I've realized that Gus Mayer has way more to offer when it comes to women's higher quality products! I've never had any problems receiving assistance, but just like any retail store, there are only a limited number of employees. I enjoy this store very much and have so for years. The shoe selection is excellent and at all different price ranges. The makeup variety is also excellent. I have had great service in shoes and makeup as these are my main purchases here. I do like the style of the clothing, but most of it is very pricey. They do great markdowns from time to time, so I take advantage of those. They close earlier than the other Summit stores, so make this one of your first stops. read more
