We were very disappointed after our most recent visit. After coming here in the past, and loving it, we had high expectations. To start, Service was very slow. There's some understanding when things take long when folks are busy, but for a 8:30 reservation we didn't order any food a little after 9:30pm. After only being served drinks for that first hour plus, we were hungry. We ordered bread. It never came. Salad came first, dropped and walked away. I took 2 bites and the look on my face prompted my wife to ask me what was wrong. Rotting greens was wrong. The arugula/spinach was rotting in plain view, and on my tounge. You know that taste of bitter greens, it tastes kinda slimy? Ugh. My wife immediately flagged the server down. They went to talk to the kitchen. Coming back, the server offered us a new dish, "maybe one that has less dressing" completely ignoring the issue in front of everyone and playing it like this was a preference thing, or our fault, as opposed to serving us inedible food and acknowledging that. I know right from there that we were going to have a bad time because when a restaurant messes up, and they blame you? It's like you're stuck in quicksand, not to recover. That exactly happened as the meal got worse. Then came the pastas, this was supposed to redeem everything. It didn't. The tagliatelle was cut in what seemed 5 different sizes, looked like pasta scraps. Looking beyond that the mushrooms were gritty and pretty dirty. Not a great taste again. Not really seasoned, just oil and dirt. The dish looked like a rush job, an after thought for a restaurant that prides itself on pasta. There was also the ravioli, which was also rushed as some of the pasta was undercooked. It was hard, and crunchy. Again, not a good mouth feel experience. My wife flagged the server down again, and we were dismissed again, they said "our pastas are generally cooked that way" Undercooked? Yikes. I'm not done yet, then came the beef. Preparation continued to be an issue as it was so tough we couldn't eat it all. Chew chew fest. We had half a plate of food untouched and the server came to say, "I'm all done for the night, bye." He knew we were disappointed left and right, dismissed us as it being our problem, and then bailed. New server didn't come until he was forced to clear our half eaten plate. No desert was offered, and we never got that bread... Needless to say I was excited to come back, and now we will never come back. I was also excited about the other restaurants, which we will never go to either. After $100+ per person, we left the restaurant still hungry :( We've sent dozens of people to Nora Gray over the years, and that will cease as well. Don't go, there's so many other places in Montreal that won't gaslight you when they mess up. Or just, won't mess up this way in the first place. We sent a email to avoid a public negative review. They said they "unfortunately don't remember it that way." More gaslighting and deflecting the problem. Don't worry, I'll make sure you're reminded. This review is a reminder of our experience, since you all seemed to have forgotten so quickly. Stay away. Buyer beware. read more

Cozy and friendly Italian spot that just blew us away dish after dish! We were greeted warmly and quickly attended to by a team of hosts, waiters and servers. As recommended, we planned on getting a variety of dishes and sharing. Started with a delicious and simple foccacia served with olive oil and spicy pepperocini. Followed by two of the smaller portions of pasta dishes which were very unique. One was essentially a pasta and asparagus representation of crab bisque. The other a lobster ravioli type unique pasta. Both were phenomenal and delicious. We finished with the pork chops that were perfectly cooked and paired extremely well with the salad on top. We had an absolutely fantastic meal here on a recent Friday evening. Service was excellent -- waiter took the time to walk us through the menu and point out any dishes that would not jive with our dietary preferences. Wine menu is superb and the pasta dishes were exquisite. We started with the focaccia and pepperoncini which was deliciously spicy. Then we had the tuna crudo which was a very large plate of perfectly sliced crudo in a light, savory sauce. We tried both the ravioli and the spaghetti, then shared the halibut entree. All were stand out favorites! Finally we finished w the panna cotta which was probably our least favorite part of the meal. It was a little too warm and the texture was too loose. The foacatta, rabbit leg, and vegetable appetizer were light and flavorful. The pasta however, was a bit lackluster though. Portions are extremely small and the mushroom flavor is very subtle. Nora Gray is such a gem and has amazing vibes and food. The ambiance is perfect, with lower lights, low music, and very aesthetically pleasing decor. The portions were perfect for two people to share if you want to try several things. We started off with crudo which was very light and flavorful. We also got the fried zucchini flowers with rabbit sausage. This was one of the high notes of the meal. We then got half portions of the mushroom pasta and the lobster pasta. The lobster pasta was texturally a miss for me. The dough was rather chewy and a bit unpleasant for me. However, it could be amazing for others. We ended the meal with the grilled halibut dish. It was a bit too burnt on the top and it left us on a low note to end the meal. We elected to skip dessert due to this. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Just as a tip to others, it takes about 30-45 minutes for the kitchen to prepare main courses based on the waitstaff so be prepared to order apps and entrees at the same time. read more

Heard so many amazing things about Nora Gray - we went for the NYE Prix Fixe menu. It was about $175 for a tasting menu which included fairly stale bread and the most bland risotto. I really wanted to like this spot as I had heard many great things but I was left extremely underwhelmed. Probably better to go for their a la carte menu as they seem to be better with their regular dishes. Honestly, there are much better Italian spots in Montreal I'd probably skip this one. read more

We enjoyed an intimate, delicious dinner at Nora Gray our first evening in Montreal with friends. The location was about a 15 minute walk from our downtown Airbnb. The restaurant is small (maybe seats 30 indoors) and darkly lit. Very cozy. We had an early reservation and it was pretty quiet. Another (loud) group came in just as we were wrapping up and we were thankful that we were ready to go! Our server, Tao and somm, Gabby were young, knowledgeable and friendly. We were surprised by how casually they were dressed in an upscale environment but it certainly didn't affect our service! If anything, it added a trendy edge (Gabby was wearing overalls and a t-shirt) to our experience. There is an extensive wine menu and our friend who is a serious wine lover chose a lovely wine that everyone enjoyed. Everything we ordered was first rate and delicious with the exception of the fried polenta croquettes - I wouldn't order those again. They weren't bad, just not incredible. The Double Agnolotti were perfection... double pillows stuffed with mushrooms & grilled corn - the sauce was perfect and didn't suffocate the agnolotti. My hubby had the pork chop and it was intentionally fatty and tender. For dessert we shared the Walnut dacquoise, ricotta mousse, and poached pears - it was tasty but not what we expected. I like to share a dessert at the end of a good meal because it is just the right amount of sweet without eating an entire serving. I saw this restaurant listed on several "best of" lists and had driven by it several times so I've been meaning to go for a while. I went for a work dinner and the ambiance was perfect for that. It has a beautiful bar and the place was not overcrowded. Service was very good as was the food, particularly the burrata. I had the quail with cabbage rolls so it was a very homey meal yet elevated. It's silly but I do notice when a restaurant has nice soap in the bathrooms (Aesop in this case). The one thing that I found odd was at dessert time I asked for tea since I'm not a coffee drinker and the restaurant said they did not have tea. Wasn't sure if it was just that day or in general but they offered hot water and lemon instead. I'm all for detoxing so not a problem for me but this is the first time running into this situation at any restaurant. read more

Our wood leather booth in the back was comfortable. Our vegetarian dining companions were so mesmerized by the antipasti menu offerings that we decided to try all of them family style, followed by individual primi selections, foregoing the more carnivore secondi dishes. We ordered few different plates and shared them. We ordered Grilled Pork chops, presentation was fab and the sauce delish but I had to ask myself what I was eating. I think I had maybe 2 bites of meat and the rest was fat, grilled fat.The pasta we ordered looked like candy wrappers which was cool, stuffed with carrot purée in a velvety sauce and under cooked which I ignored because they were good. Lastly the dessert Mascarpone dumpling with chocolate sauce except the cheese inside was frozen. I returned it and they apologized because it was suppose to be smooth cheese not frozen. I feel compelled to write a review after such a great experience at Nora Gray tonight. Things I loved: 1. Arrived a few minutes before our rez time and our table wasn't ready. We went to the bar and ordered 2 glasses of wine. At the end of our meal, we were told the wine was on the house because of the wait. Way to my heart!!! 2. Food was truly delicious. Salad was simple and bright. Pasta was fresh and inventive. My husband said the lamb was the best he's ever had (and he does not throw around superlatives lightly). 3. Pasta was in a delicious white wine/butter sauce. Just as we finished the last of the mezzalunas, a waitress floated by with some extra pieces of torn foccacia to mop up the sauce. To celebrate a close friend's wedding, 7 of us had supper at Nora Gray and we were not disappointed! I really enjoyed the ambiance and coziness of the restaurant. Like other reviews, I did find the dim lighting rather dark but it didn't hinder our experience at all. We decided to go family style and order different dishes to share so that we could try as much as possible. Wine: We ordered 3 bottles of wine but the one that stood out to me was the Orange wine from the Québec winery Francine Pinard et Filles. It was light, not too acidic but not sweet and had a lot of flavour. It was very unique and apparently the winery only produces a small number of bottles per year, which are only sold to select restaurants in Québec. It was priced around $60, which was responsible for the 7 of us. Highly recommend it! Appetizers: -Burrata with tomatoes -Dip with caviar and sliced vegetables -Beef tartar -House salad with nuts and shaved parmesan The salad and burrata were my favourites. Pasta's: -Ravioli stuffed with pig's head -Orecchiette in tomato sauce -Caramelle stuffed with smoked eggplant Each pasta was absolutely fantastic. I could have eaten each plate of pasta all to myself! I highly recommend splurging and ordering each pasta dish on the menu, it's worth it. Mains: -Steak with grilled vegetables and blue cheese -Arctic Char with a lemon cream sauce The steak was delicious and the arctic char was very good but didn't stand out like the steak. Desserts: -Mint cake stuffed with mascarpone and a vanilla gelato. Very good, a bit dense though. -a Variety of Gelato's with sesame. so creamy and delicious and a great way to digest our meal. -Coffee's came with an almond cookie, which may be one of the best cookies I've ever had. It was chewy, not too sweet but fluffy. Overall, we had a wonderful experience! My only disappointment was that the waiters and waitresses were not knowledgeable with food intolerances. One person in our group is gluten and lactose intolerant and they had trouble understanding what she could be served. It took multiple questions and even at that they served her a milk based dessert. They also thought parmesan would be suitable for her... For a high end restaurant rated #24 in Canada, I was expecting them to be able to accommodate these intolerances or at least be knowledgeable. I am so happy we were able to get in here. This meal was possibly one of the best meals I have ever had! Our server was simply perfect! She guided us through our courses and helped us pick out the best wine I have ever tasted. She was warm and friendly and was part of the family by the end of the meal. Despite being highly rated in the foodie community, this restaurant is not pretentious at all; decor is simple, laid-back and contemporary. I went here with a business partner and we were both able to enjoy ourselves casually without feeling the pressure to suit up for the establishment. At Nora Gray, Focus was definitely on the food, rather than decor. I ordered a burrata cheese as appetizer, with a lamb ragout pasta and grilled octopus as first and second courses. I use Eater to research my culinary adventures, Nora Gray has been on many of their lists for quite some time so when there was an open reservation available, we snatched it. Service - 3.5 - We were recommended a bottle which they ran out of, which is fine, but our appetizers came before the wine, huge no no (first world problems, I know) Food - 3 1. Tortellini soup was under-cooked slightly, needed an additional minute or two 2. Calamari, I've never had it raw, but was slimy and under seasoned. 3. Meatball, lacks flavor, could only taste the sauce on top, nothing inside, even the par cooked egg inside. (needed salt) 4. Braised short rib - this was the best dish with depth of flavor, texture and technique Decore - 3.5 very dark, folks a few table over had to use their phones to read the menu. Wine - 4 very good selection w/knowledge staff. IMO, I'd recommend trying other spots on the Eater list before Nora Gray. Joe Beef, HVOR, Le Fantome etc. come to mind. read more

On any given night, Nora Gray has previously risen to five star status without breaking a sweat. It had been about a year since I had last eaten here, so my expectations were quite high. As with most upper tier Montreal restaurants, reservations must be made well in advance, especially if you don't fancy dinner at 5:30pm or 9:30pm. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated and began perusing their impressive wine list. We settled on a crisp yet slightly funky French white wine which paired beautifully with their Italian dishes. If you read my reviews, you know that I like to try a whole bunch of dishes. Worst case scenario of course is that there is too much food on the table. So many servers are quick to warn against this, often vocally discouraging ordering that extra appetizer. This was the case again at Nora Gray. We ordered the salad, the fish stuffed zucchini flowers, and the burrata with tomatoes. For mains, my wife ordered the scallops and I got the duck. The waitress was a little put off by this and suggested a half salad. I absolutely love their salad. It's simple but extremely well dressed and unique. I wasn't having it for a second. Bring me the full portion of lettuce. I'll risk the upset stomach. The brandade stuffed zucchini flowers was served in a tasty tomato sauce with fresh anchovies. This is one fishy-tasting dish. Extremely old school and about as unhip as you can get. That's ok! I dug it. It's nice to try something old school. There's only so many salmon tartares a guy can scoop into his mouth before he passes out from boredom. The burrata with tomatoes tasted like burrata with tomatoes. It's a delicious dish. You've had it at dozens of restaurants, and for good reason; It's a classic and Nora Gray's version is no exception. Combined with some delicious bread and a spicy pepper salsa/relish, I was scared as to my ability to find room in my belly for the main courses. My fears were completely unfounded. My wife's scallop dish, while pretty, was smaller than any of the appetizers. Four cute scallops on top of some peas. I could have popped these into my mouth in about 20 seconds. My duck was slightly more substantial, but still diminutive; perhaps 4 ounces of a magret. Placed atop a small bed of corn "risotto", the value of this dish falls a bit short at 32$. It was tasty, but I have had far better. Beyond talking about value however, I really don't get the scare tactics about ordering too much at the onset of the meal. The appetizers are sized bigger than the mains! This was not always so at Nora Gray. About 3 years back, I remember having a huge plate of ribs or a large veal chop. These cute little dishes are more like sampling portions than a proper main. Sure, at the bottom of the menu they have a rib steak for 2 for a cool 100$ which is another extreme altogether. It would be nice to have normal portions somewhere in the middle. For dessert, we had the vegan chocolate tart. If they had a normal chocolate tarte, trust me, I would have ordered that instead. We are talking about a dessert with no milk, no eggs, no butter. It's shaped like pie, but it essentially tasted like sweetened roughage. I'm not a vegan, nor do I understand how to best prepare vegan dishes. I will say however, that if you are cooking for those with dietary restrictions, why not try to create something original rather than reproduce a makeshift copy of a mainstream food that never rises up to the original? Have you ever tried kosher pepperoni?, vegetarian bacon?, non dairy creamer?, gluten free bread? This dessert reminded me of those imitation foods. The strawberry shortcake was lovely however. The vibe here is always cozy and the service is always excellent. Usually, I love their pasta creations, but the other night, none of the offerings spoke to me. I haven't given up on Nora Gray and some of my quips are minor. By and large, this is a great restaurant with a few hiccups on my last visit. read more

This review is a 4.5 stars in which I rounded down. We had an exceptional dining experience! It was Tuesday night, we came with no reservation but fortunately they had a table. The atmosphere was perfect for date night: dim, cozy and comfortable. The servers were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. They answered all our odd questions! Couldn't take well lit photos, but honestly I couldn't wait to try the food. For starters, we got the bread, and the fish tartar. I was disappointed that they did not offer bread anyways, as most Italian restaurants would. The tartar was delicious, with the sea urchin mayonnaise, accompanied with fresh herbs to cut through the richness. Next, we got a completo sized goat cheese gnocchi. The homemade ham, chanterelle mushrooms and fresh cheese really gave it a wonderful flavour. The main, halibut with asparagus was well executed as well. This place is so good. Everything about it is worth gushing over. The cocktails were amazing. The service was great. The food was impeccable. The decor outside and inside was very nice. I loved the ambience. We had a variety of cocktails and they were all delicious; crisp and refreshing and pleasing to the eye. We started with the veal skewers - I usually stay away from veal but this was really yum and the olive oil potatoes... I could have a bowl of it and be very very happy. For entrée, I had the pork collar. They only make it medium pink and it was cooked to perfection. So juicy and so so so flavorful. 10/10 I definitely recommend this place! read more

I had never had the pleasure of dining at this establishment although it's been on my to do for years. Under the circumstances, I thought I'd settle for some takeout instead. I can assure you I did not compromise anything as the food and service was stupendous! Firstly, hands down, the best pasta I have ever had!! The pappardelle were perfectly al dente, and the bolognese sauce was oh so delicious, rich and flavourful and just enough to cover the pasta but not overwhelm the dish. As for desserts, the pistachio financier was amazing! The cake was moist and the orange flavoured syrup was just the perfect combo. My friend recommended Nora grey and boy did it not disappoint. Since this was a birthday dinner, we ordered a few things that were all good. The waitress was sweet and so friendly. She brought one wine that we didn't like as much so she brought another that was delicious and ultimately paired with everything we ate. We started with the bread and a green salad. As simple as bread and olive oil is, the spicy oil puts it over the top and was so delicious. The green salad was a perfect fresh starter. Nicely dressed, well balanced and just a nice way to start. We then had the mezzaluna pasta dish. The pasta was really nice with a squash purée but what made it delicious was the Guinea hen. When you mix it all into one bite it was perfect. The main course was the TBone for 2. The waitress said "it's a big plate" and looking at the other dishes I wasn't expecting something huge but she was right, it was massive. It came with delicious fries, carrots and Brussels sprouts. The best part was the steak. She didn't ask how we wanted it cooked but that speaks to the chef's ability. The sauce and steak was just delicious. I can't speak to how much we enjoyed it and since this is almost always on the menu, I strongly suggest it. Oh and it's also Quebec meat, which as I keep learning is really good beef. We ended with the chocolate prune cake with earl grey gelato with orange on the top. It was so moist and rich but really tasty. Try having a bite with all components because they play so well together. We went to the 7pm seating on a Friday, service was fast and everything had the perfect temperature. I recommend this place to whoever is coming to the city and want modern Italian at its finest. FINALLY! After multiple attempts at scheduling a dinner date at Nora Gray, the stars finally aligned and off we went. Location: I guess you can call it Griffintown. It's on St. Jacques in a residential area and unless you know it's there, easy to walk by. Bonus? No problem finding parking. Food: Holy Mother of all things delectable and delicious! Loved every single thing that I had. The menu is varied and offers up fresh cuisine using seasonal ingredients. If you go in with a large appetite, you can work your way through their three-course menu. On my end, I had to skip the Primi to leave room for dessert! We had: Antipasti: Mozzarella w/fried eggplant - I generally don't like eggplant but really enjoyed this. It was almost like eating thickly cut chips. These weren't greasy or oily at all, and the mozzarella was amazingly fresh and soft. Prosciutto w/fresh basil and peaches: Again, something I don't usually eat, but I did Not regret my choice. The prosciutto was melt-in-my-mouth delicious and the melange of peach and basil was absolutely perfect. This dish isn't on their regular menu. Primi: We skipped this course but they had some delectable options that included spaghetti w/shrip, orange and pistachio, and Busiate w/tuna, peas and mint. You can order half or full-sized portions. I think the idea here, is to order the half and treat it as a second appetizer. Secondi: Halibut w/fresh corn polenta, green onion and bacon. My date ordered this and loved it. The halibut was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the portion was pretty generous. Lemon sausage w/crushed potatoes and zucchini chips. Again, something I don't normally eat (sausage) but I was so intrigued by the idea of a lemon sausage that I went ahead and ordered this dish. The sausage is homemade with pork, rabbit and zest of lemon. I was worried it might be a little dry but this wasn't the case at all. The sausage was served in a tightly wound spiral and was moist and so damn good. The crushed potatoes had a lovely flavor and the chips were perfectly cooked. The remaining sausage juice (that sounds bad, right?) was served over the dish, making the overall experience flavorful and awesome. Dessert: We tried the homemade doughnut with peach marmalade and either marscarpone or fresh meringue. I really don't remember which of the two it was but I'll go with the marscarpone as it wasn't sweet. I'm generally not a doughnut person but this was SO good! The doughnut was topped with cinnamon brown sugar (I think). It was just so damn good. We also tried something-chocolate ganache that was served with berries and coulis (and ice cream). There were three chocolate thing in total, and flavor-wise, this dessert is perfect for chocolate lovers. The only thing that I found annoying was that they were bloody hard to cut. I had to use two spoons - one to hold down my chocolate and the other to try and cut the pieces off. This is not to say that this dessert wasn't fresh - it was. The texture was just very, very firm :) Price: It's not cheap - for two people, the total was $166, however bear in mind that we had three glasses of wine and two lattes. I will definitely return, but probably for special occasions or you know, if I win the lotto - then I'll go every week. A definite must if you love great food and a great ambiance. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The restaurant is very small - I think it fits about 30 people. It's also a hot spot so call ahead to make a reservation before you go. read more

Dinner was so amazing. We asked for suggestions and the person serving us offered to surprise us with different offerings. We agreed. She asked us a few questions about allergies, likes and dislikes. So fun to not know what was coming. We got to sample items we never would have thought to try. We are planning our next visit already. read more
