This five star review is for agent Rachel Skumanich. I find the sheer variance in real estate agent quality baffling and deeply frustrating. And so with great trepidation I contacted Rachel who had been referred to me by Erick Hartz. Erick and I had worked together previously after a disastrous start with Nooklyn and a different agent (who I will not slander here against my baser instincts). Warily, I picked up the pieces of my failed apartment hunt with Erick and developed an easy rapport with him. He knows his stuff and made it happen under a tight timeline. So I was bummed to find that he was out of town when my recent search commenced...and exhausted by the idea of needing to grind through listings with a stranger. And so I contacted Rachel with low expectations...which would be quickly shattered. Her proactive communication, efficiency, and integrity surpassed my wildest dreams for a real estate agent. She listened to (and remembered) what I needed, understood the nuances of the BK neighborhood I looked in, and told the truth about each place we saw. She suggested places I didn't know about and made clear that helping me was a priority. When I found the right fit, she liaised smoothly with the landlord to keep things moving along, and advocated for me as a reliable and mature tenant. She gave me her time, (and didn't make me feel rushed), meeting me for an extra visit before I signed off on the new place, to assuage last minute jitters associated with paying a bit more than I had planned on. After I moved in Rachel texted just to check in and ensure that things had gone well. In sum, she treated me the way I wish we all treated one another...with kindness, honesty and patience. Now I have the kind of apartment I always wanted...a cosmic gift from the city on the eve of my 15th year anniversary of Brooklyn living. The agent that we worked with Suzanne was completely unhelpful and wasted our time. First, when we went to visit the location, I (a person of color) asked questions, but Suzanne responded to partner (a white person), never making eye contact with me. We're one of many couples who have less than stellar credit, but a fantastic income, references, etc and we were upfront about it. Even after she saw that we could clearly afford the apartment (I make 80X the rent) and we had an amazing reference from our landlord, Suzanne intensely scrutinized our application asking for documentation which was not required (like retirement savings account info). She then asked us for a guarantor. I managed to secure a guarantor (who was also Black), whose credit score is 700+ and whose income is on par with my own, and we were told that they still don't meet the threshold. When I asked the credit score threshold that they were seeking, I did not get a response. Instead I was asked if I wanted her to submit the application. THEN at the very last minute, Suzanne informed me that the rent was actually $700 more than listed on Nooklyn's website but that we would receive 2 months free. When asked where I could find this info on the website or in writing I did not receive a response. I truly believe that this bait and switch was an attempt to get us to withdraw our application and regardless, the apartment was not worth the $4395 net price they would appear on the lease. Still we were willing to consider paying since we'd given Nooklyn $1000 deposit and had gone through the trouble of finding a guarantor. Obviously, we did not get the apartment, but I do not even believe that Suzanne submitted our documentation to the landlord. As soon as she saw our credit score she seemed disinterested and attempted to discourage us from applying. Usually, a realtor would attempt to show you other apartment options, but for Suzanne we were just a credit score. A note of advice: if Nooklyn is unable to accommodate individuals with less than stellar credit regardless of income, savings and other factors just be upfront rather than wasting the potential tenants time. Or perhaps they just cannot accommodate people of color with credit issues. read more

We were shown an apartment by Andy, who was rude and unprofessional, complaining about the current tenants (including off-color comments mentioning their ethnicity, an ethnicity that I share, which was awkward) complaining about his job, complaining about his friends, complaining about prospective tenants, to my partner and I -- clearly had a chip on his shoulder. He was frustrated and annoyed when booking times, and condescending and snarky to me whenever I asked him a question. We were stunned and utterly exhausted after the experience, and even if we liked the apartment, would not have continued with an application where we'd be forced to interact with him again. SO so disappointed! Going by the flood of excellent Yelp reviews, I suggested contacting Nooklyn to my 24 year old son who was looking to relocate in Brooklyn. He called and spoke to someone who took his information, waited a week and heard nothing. Then, my husband who was visiting for the week, figured they should walk in to a Nooklyn Storefront. They walked into this one and again, while the people working there were friendly, they took his information again and then...nothing. In the meantime, after scouring Craigslist, Gypsy housing and the Listings Project, he landed a great spot right on Prospect Park. This is a happy ending but so sad Nooklyn was a no show! read more

I had a tour with Nooklyn today and shall I say I was thoroughly pissed. my tour was scheduled at a certain time, and as per usual, I'm early. I left work and was reprimanded because I had to leave early. I made it there, only to have to wait for over 30 minutes before I can tour. then I find out that the person doing it doesn't have access to the unit I was there to see! time wasted and job almost lost for no security. hope they do much better for others In need of their services. this was truly a horrible experience. read more

Victor never responded to my numerous texts about a listing. Blew me off, essentially. If the apartment was rented or you are waiting to hear from the listing agent, how about letting the potential client know. I would avoid Victor and this place. My roommate and I were neck deep in the draining process of trying to find a great New York apartment when we encountered Ryan at Nooklyn. We met him on a Saturday morning and we had keys in our hands to our DREAM apartment by Monday evening. Absolutely no exaggeration. I'd always heard horror stories about dealing with New York brokers, but this process could not have been more painless.. it was even enjoyable, dare I say. Ryan was constantly available to us.. he walked us through the whole process and simplified it in every way that he could. There were a lot of hoops we had to jump through in a small window of time to land the apartment, and he made each one easy for us so that we could apply as quickly as possible. He even went with us after work one night to meet the new landlord (who happened to be arguably the most amazing landlord of all time) and facilitate the beginning of that relationship. The pressure was completely alleviated by him being in the mix and by the time the whole process was done, we were practically ready to take him out for drinks to celebrate and demand that he be our friend forever. We were promised a refundable deposit--not the case at all. When we let them know we were going in another direction, Kate exchanged some hostile words, raised her voice and then promptly hung up the phone. We were then told that our deposit wouldn't be refunded, despite their insistent promises. I'd avoid Nooklyn and especially Kate at all costs. I had a great experience working with Kayla C. to find an apartment. I first found a listing on Street Easy, and she was the listed broker so I called her to set up a viewing. She was a bit short/curt at first over email, but I feel like that's a common broker attitude because people flake or ghost all the time. But I viewed that same day in the evening, and after we met in person she was helpful and communicative all the way through. When I went to sign the lease in the office, I sat down and read through each page thoroughly and she didn't rush me at all, even answering my questions and checking with her boss on the phone when I had questions she couldn't answer herself. We had a great time at Nooklyn. My roommate and I started at another company but they didn't have the selection that Nooklyn had. We were pretty picky with what we wanted and Erick showed us all the apartments in our price range and area. The only hassle was the application process. It was a lot to handle. We had 2 guarantors and he said he needed everything from their bank accounts to tax returns as well as our own, even though everyone had great credit. We were a bit put off by how much he was requiring us to give but in the end we got the apartment, so I guess even if it wasn't all necessary it was all helpful. They know what they are doing. The only reason I'm writing this review is because I just texted Steve, a month after our lease signing, to ask a dumb question and he was helpful. Then he asked me too review them. read more

I set out that Saturday to look at 1 apartment, and we ended up looking at 5! All of which would have been a great fit. What a joke. I saw some listings online. Told the "agent" Matthew we were looking for an apartment that accepted dogs. He sends me another listing that looks good. Set up a viewing. When we get to the building there are signs saying no dogs allowed. He shows up and acts confused. Then he takes us to a unit that is occupied and not for rent! The guy that lives there says he's been in it for 3 months. Matthew, still confused, tries to find the listing on his phone. When I asked if he checked with the building management to see if it was still available, he says he isn't in contact with them. He lamely apologizes and basically runs out of the building. So weird and unprofessional. I won't be using Nooklyn again. read more

I've been so frustrated with them over what should have been a relatively easy moving experience. The misinformation, lack of communication, dealing with three different people for some reason, meetings canceled without informing me and bewildering layers of obfuscation has left me constantly wondering what is going on. I had a pretty good experience with Nooklyn, but can't give 4/5 stars. I met Steve when he was showing my apartment. Quickly I liked him and asked if he would be my broker as well. He was swift in responding to my texts and emails, which I appreciated. We set up a time to see one place I liked, and Steve was a bit late, which made me nervous, but he was very apologetic when he arrived. However he also then didn't have keys that worked, so we had to call in another broker. To their credit - Nooklyn found my boyfriend and I an apartment we absolutely love, and they didn't charge us a fee. The process of paying the security deposit, etc. was relatively seamless (though I did have to check the math once or twice) and Steve was totally pleasant throughout. My issue comes in with the lease signing - before we went to sign the lease, Steve assured us an August 15th move in would be no problem. Then when we went to sign the lease, Steve didn't meet us there, we ended up working with Jordan, who we were less comfortable with. And we found out that day from the management company that the unit (it was new) still wasn't done, and ultimately they didn't want us to move in until Sept. 15th. We were able to negotiate back to Sept. 1st - but the process from then on was a struggle because false expectations were set on both sides. So over all - really nice guy, very communicative and they found us an awesome apartment. Points off however for setting false expectations that made our initial relationship with our management company a bit rocky and for not being there to see us through the whole process from beginning to end. read more
