Noodlepig was a great experience! The noodles are homemade and in a very tasty sauce/soup. Everything was hot coming out to our table and we especially enjoyed the shrimp that came with a very well crafted sauce. We ordered the house special bowl with pork belly and added the egg. The jammy egg was done to perfection. Their french fries were also out of this world with a great spice mix on them. Our son who is gluten-free was able to enjoy some gluten-free noodles on his bowl as well. We were surprised to learn that it is not part of a chain as it was. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Noodlepig yet because I've been here a handful of times and always have a great experience. I've had three different ramens and tried bites of many others (my friends' food, haha) and have really enjoyed them all! My favorite is the Kare curry. The flavor is rich, well-balanced, and just dang good! I always forget to ask for no green onions as I think they put too much in, but that's on me. I usually order my ramen with tofu but today I decided to try the fried chicken and I'll never go back. Perfectly fried, delicious breading. And the eggs, oh my goodness, you *must* add the eggs! I went with a bunch of friends to celebrate AAPI heritage month before we went to the Lantern Festival. I was familiar with NoodlePig because the owner has helped to teach students about entrepreneurship, the restaurant industry, and Asian food. I ended up going on a Wednesday night at around 7:30 which was perfect. There were few people in line and ample seating both in and outdoors. The menu is very clear and easy to read and understand for newcomers and seasoned eaters as well. I will say, some of the items were decently pricey, specifically the ramens. I got 1 ramen and 1 non-alcoholic boba which came out to over $30 with tip. The amount of ramen that you get is decent for the price but the meat was lacking and I wouldn't necessarily pay for it again since protein is an add-on but the ramen flavor was solid. The restaurant is definitely more of a casual restaurant despite the pricing as you order at a counter and there are no servers. Dishes are discarded at a dish bin which was well labeled and conveniently placed in the middle of the restaurant. The staff did work very quickly for the size of the group that we had so that was a great plus! Overall, the restaurant and owner do a good job of highlighting a cuisine that may be new for some and satisfying for those already familiar. read more

The Zessan is WOWSA! So much flavor packed into a creamy broth with ramen noods. We also tried the Chicken Sando XL with a side of their signature fries and butter noods. The butter noods were pretty fantastic, think Japanese Alfredo with lemongrass hints! The chicken Sando was good, but I felt the amount of meat or size of the sandwich was not commensurate with a steep $13 price tag. I didn't taste the meat as much as I tasted bun -and I couldn't taste the sauce at all. The star was those fries! Wowsa! I'm going to see them in my dreams! The employees were great, the atmosphere was clean and bright, and I loved the emphasis on eco responsibility. Lastly, check the prices of beverages before you order. Unless we were overcharged, a fountain pop is $4.50-5ish. It was a regular-sized cup of Diet Coke, nothing fancy or jumbo. I probably would've passed had I known. I keep coming back because the noodles are fantastic, and the broth is solid. The Zessan with tonkotsu and the Garlic Shoyu with miso really stand out. But the meat is unimaginative. At other great ramen spots, you get thick pork loin that's pan-seared or pork belly with a nice sear or even candied edges. Here, you get thin slices that are unrendered and feel barely cooked, plus the portions are meager. When the noodles are this good, it is a letdown to have such small portions, and with everything a la carte, you end up at $30 after tip. I respect that they give to charity, but I cannot justify it. At Sapporo, I can spend less and get bigger portions. If the portions matched the price, I would be here all the time. read more

I had heard from people I know that this spot had pretty good ramen, but that it was "expensive," which is why I put off trying it for quite some time. I ordered takeout from here since I was craving ramen, and so far in Grand Rapids, I have only tried Ginza's ramen, which I like. The interior is nice and clean; there was more seating than I expected. It's a fast casual spot, so you order and pick up your food at a counter. The service was pretty quick as I probably waited less than 10 minutes total. However, I understand now why people told me it's expensive -- ramen bowls range from $13-15, but this does NOT include any protein or egg, it only includes noodles, broth, and a few veggies. One whole soy marinated egg is $4 and chashu pork (2 pieces) was $3. I think pork shoulder was $5. I think these prices are absolutely absurd, considering the ramen bowls do not include egg or protein to begin with. The egg was cooked well and the chashu was just OK; the fat was not rendered enough even though it was a small/thing piece of meat, in my opinion. The broth flavor was OK; you could get significantly better ramen (& larger portion) for the same or cheaper cost in major cities like Chicago or NYC. The flavor did not make up for the cost whatsoever. Overall, I would not rate this place as "worth it." read more

I was intensely craving pezole and thought I'd drop into Noodlepig for their ramen version of this Mexican soup. I was met at the door by the owner, Chris, who apologetically informed me that they were closed today for a staff meeting. Enchanted by his charisma, Chris told me about his recent trip abroad and some new exciting noodle recipes they plan to implement. I met his wife and co-owner, Kim, who rivaled Chris's enthusiasm and friendliness. She mentioned to me that this is the only ramen shop in town that makes both their broth and noodles from scratch using quality ingredients, particularly highlighting the King Arthur brand flour for their noodles because of her own gluten sensitivity. They also mentioned that they will be making changes to their hours going forward and will probably be closed on Tuesday's. So keep an eye out for when their new hours are posted. Chris and Kim offered to make me a kit to take home, which was super generous. So I was able to satiate my craving after nuking the broth, pork shoulder and onions, boiling the noodles for 1.5 minutes and then stirring in the lime, cilantro and a radish type vegetable. It was delicious and hit the spot. In the past, I remember thinking the broth was a bit salty, but today it was perfectly seasoned and balanced. I thoroughly enjoyed this fun fusion take on pezole and would definitely order it again. This is a great little spot and I love that I got to meet the owners and hear their passion and willingness to continually evolve the recipes and redefine the flow of their shop to best suit the GR vibe. Stay tuned for some more interesting changes including a rethink of the sit down area so it feels less busy and "rushed". The broth was absolute perfection--rich with just the right amount of spice! Their broths are always full of depth without being overwhelming. I came in right around when they opened up. Came upon this by accident but love ramen and have good experience with build-your-own. Got two different ramens. I got level 3 spice and it was not that spicy at all, if you are a spice person. The pork was a bit too fatty for hubby. The employee was helpful and asked if we had allergies. We also got the French fries and they were really good. Drove into Grand Rapids and was craving ramen, so we decided to stop here. Overall it was a great experience! When you walk in, immediately they have menus for you to look at. It is a self service type of place, order at the counter and pick up yourself. I love that they have all the to go containers and utensils out and ready for you to use. Staff were walking around making sure everything was good and cleaning tables. There aren't a ton of tables, so I assume it can be pretty packed in there! The ramen itself was tasty. Our only complaint was that the miso broth was saltier than others we've had, but not so salty that we couldn't eat it. We especially love the noodles here! Adding the half egg as well was a good choice. Other ingredients were fresh and tasty. I love that for takeout they kept the broth separate from the rest of the dish. I tried the boba with their lactose free organic milk to see how my stomach handled it, and great. I love a jasmine-matcha combo and this one delivered. Staff friendly. I had been waiting to try Noodlepig for a while, so I was thrilled to be able to finally try it! When you walk into the store, they have menus out in front where you can take a look at. They also have a picture where they show you what certain foods are (for those who may not be familiar with some names), which I found really helpful. You order at the counter, then they call your number when they have your food ready. I got the Zessan Tonkotsu with pork shoulder and half aji-tama egg. It was a substantial portion, and I even took some remaining portions home. Some people might be able to finish the whole thing though. The broth was really flavorful and I thought the pork shoulder meat was pretty soft and tender. The egg was really good. The noodles were not what I was expecting - it seemed to be from another grain (I'll have to go back again to ask), but I thought it was a nice surprise because of the texture. I don't have any complaints about the ramen - it really was quite good. I could tell a lot of love and care went into it - the bowl was nicely presented. That being said, after adding two proteins and tip, my dish came out to be $24. That's a LOT for a bowl of ramen! I've had pretty amazing ramen elsewhere for much less than $20 and it came with protein. I know they have a mission and state that for every ramen bowl sold, two kids are fed. So I kept needing to tell myself that it's for the kids.... But I mean, I'm happy to help out with a good cause. I guess you are paying for the good quality food along with the mission and good they are doing for the community. The restaurant was very clean, and the service was really great. I really wanted to love this place, but the basic ramen comes with pretty much nothing in it and is way overpriced with any add ons ($4 for an egg, I can't). Their customer service also isn't great. Wish there was a bit more transparency about their donation program; I'm all for charity combined with food, but I don't think that it justifies how much everything is marked up. The two gals that helped us were super helpful in describing and recommending which dishes to order. They also asked us at the end how our meal was, since they knew it was our first time trying which I thought was very nice! :-) Now onto the actual food (though I could go on and on about how positive and friendly their staff is!). We FINALLY made it to Noodle Pig!! I've been trying to go literally since their soft opening, and last night was finally the night the stars aligned For drinks, Derek got a blueberry soda from the grab-and-go cooler, and I got a strawberry sakura boba tea. I've only had boba a handful of times and it's not my go-to drink, buts it's definitely a yummy drink to have on occasion! Our friend got the Japanese Cafe Latte, and that was good as well! It was POPPIN at Noodle Pig last night, and we were worried we wouldn't get a table, so we ordered our food to go, just in case (hence the lack of presentation). I ordered the Miso and Derek got the Katsu Kare. Mine was absolutely divine (and the naruto? so precious ) Derek made his ridiculously spicy so I tried a bite but was busy trying not to die instead of assessing the flavor But he liked it! Our friend ordered his to eat at the restaurant, so I did get an instagram-worthy picture of his (which is also katsu kare). We had a great dinner! Would definitely go back, but next time, we'll try to plan for a less busy time. Even though this is downtown, parking for afternoon tea was easy, lots of spaces right in front and a parking lot across the street. The space was very clean and simple. When you walk in there are menus directly in front of the door hung on the partition, you will need to grab one to review before you get in line to order. We didn't quite know what we wanted and the staff were very patient and helpful walking us through all the options. I settled on a matcha Jasmine Latte (note, it looked they only had milk tea) with matcha and taro crystals at 50% sweet and it was very nicely done. My miso ramen felt like it didn't have enough body to it and the husband's shoyu just tasted salty without any other depth to it. On top of that, it's quite expensive for ramen, especially because it doesn't come with any baseline protein (egg, chasu) so each thing is a separate charge. I've been very excited to try this place and we finally made it! This place is within walking distance from my boyfriends place and when we arrived the line was pretty long. It moved along at a good pace though and before we knew it we were able to order. They have digital menu barcodes posted but people in line were handing around menus as well. Even one employee was walking around the line asking if anyone had any questions which was cool I thought. Right away I felt like the vibe of this places was really hip and modern and exciting to be at. Unfortunately didn't feel like there was a lot of seating but by the time we ordered we happily found a table for two. When we arrived to the counter to order, the lady there was extremely helpful. I like to ask alot of questions to make sure I'm getting exactly what I want and she obliged and was super kind the entire time. I ordered the Taro boba and they offer plenty of dairy free milks which is awesome! The taro flavor was delicious and I really liked it but my boba were a bit undercooked. Not a horrible thing but still something to mention. There are three sizes you can get for boba tea as well which is pretty dang exciting! When I looked over their menu for ramen they have 7 signature bowls to choose from and also the option to create your own. Right away the Thai Coconut Curry bowl caught my eye and I was dead set on trying that one. I love curry and I saw this bowl and shrimp tempura (one of my favorites and an egg, yum!). I ordered the Thai Coconut Curry without the chopped peanuts though, only because I'm not a fan of nuts in my warm food. You can order a half size of ramen or the regular size but I went with regular because I wanted the full experience:)! Once you pay for your food they hand you a laminated card with a number on it and then you can wait for them to make your food and call your number/name when the order is ready. My boyfriend ordered the Shoyu ramen and he seemed to enjoy his! My ramen was so beautiful I had to take a pic and enjoyed all the toppings and the broth was so delicious. So rich and nutty but also a tiny bit of heat that was flavorful but not overwhelming at all. The fact that each bowl donates towards a good cause makes you feel really great about eating there. Above the cash register, there's a sign of how many bowls have been sold and how many hungry children have been fed. Very cool! I would like to visit again because I'm always interested in trying new things and they had a lot of their menu that was listed as "Coming Soon!" I've been waiting for NoodlePig to open for a few months now, and was super excited to get my husband and I spots for one of the soft open dates. The décor is nice and clean looking, but doesn't feel sterile. I love that the bar style seating along the windows has purse hooks all over the place! There isn't a ton of seating, so it might not be a great place for a larger group, but stopping in for a solo lunch, or a group of 2-4 would be great. They take your orders at the counter, I don't believe there is a plan to have table service, but it was quite quick and the employees are super friendly. The food was DELICIOUS! I had the Thai coconut curry bowl and my husband had the Katsu Kare bowl. I'm not huge into traditional ramen (hubby is), but the coconut curry bowl was amazing! The shrimp was so good; I thought it might be soggy from the broth, but it really wasn't. I also had my doubt about the egg, but it was so good! I just wish they'd had takeaway containers at that point because the bowls are way too much food for me to finish. I'm so glad to hear how happy everyone was with the soft open, and how busy the grand opening was! I need to get back to try the the pork pozole bowl soon! read more

I've been watching Noodlepig's progress on social media and have been impressed with the owner's transparency and updates. Nate and I checked out one of their soft opening dates and really enjoyed the experience! The line went smoothly and we only had to wait about 15 minutes for our order. We got the tonkotsu ramen, curry ramen, pickled cucumbers, and strawberry cheesecake boba. The employee taking our order was so kind and helpful with recommendations and made sure to ask if we had any food allergies. The atmosphere inside is modern and clean, and the music was the perfect level. There is sort of limited seating and one big communal table, which personally isn't my favorite. We were able to grab two seats on the little bar near the window. I loved the multiple hooks under the counter for purses and jackets. Our food was presented beautifully and everything looked amazing. You know the saying - we eat with our eyes first - and Noodlepig has this part down! So photogenic. Our ramen was delicious. They have a few types of noodles but I preferred the more traditional. The ones that look like soba noodles were chewier. I loved the tonkotsu broth! It was incredibly rich, creamy, and flavorful without being super salty. The curry ramen was an interesting unique spin. I'm happy I tried it but next time I'd build my own bowl. So cool that they have this option. Finally the strawberry cheesecake boba was mind blowing. I've never had anything like it! Super sweet but definitely a great dessert item.
