As much as I like to support African businesses across the diaspora, and would like to leave a positive review for this salon, this one is too much to just throw under the carpet. I would give this salon negative --5*** if I could. I have been to this place 3 times, the first was terrible as the second, but the last which was just 5 days ago, makes me say never again.
The first time, even though the salon didn't look so clean and their stations were not well organised, I said maybe I was being too critical.
The second time, in the midst of the braider trying to blow-dry my hair before cornrows, she couldn't go through with it, because according to her, my hair was too thick, so she then switched places with one of her other team members, who also happened to be working on a customer, none of them sanitize their hands from one customer to the next, then once my hair was fully blow-dried, they switched places again, no sanitizing of hands, I told my self that was the last; but didn't speak up or politely asked them to sanitize or wash their hands.
The third time I went, which was 5 days ago, I didn't want to take too long trying to do my hair, by myself, as I have some time constraint.
The stylist walked me into a filthy chair, with hair all over the floor, they started doing my hair and the two ladies that teamed up to do my hair got into an argument; Now hear words like; "idiot", "nonsense", bickering and noise flying all over my head. To top it all off, one of them got emotional, she was sobbing and sniffing, she then picked up a tissue blew her nose, shabbily sanitized her hands and kept on doing my hair, she then called her husband, and started to complain in her local dialect over my head, "I couldn't understand what she was saying", but I could tell, through the tone of her voice and her rhythm on my head, that she was narrating about the incident.
In the midst of all the painful to hear, narration on the phone, that I didn't understand, she decided that, there was too much hair in her way, so she bent over to the floor carelessly picked up the hair with her fingers touching the floor and jumped right back to doing my hair, no sanitizing of washing of hands.
Now the fight episode between the two was over, there goes another one of their team mate/braider watching tv, she got displeased with the media outcome, so that one too started to nag, saying things like "idiot!" tswwwwwwwww!
Now that episode was over, another braider who was about to go home, decided to open a plea/confrontation with the other braider who was still braiding my hair, as the other one had left since she was done braiding the front of my hair, asking her not to mention her name whenever she has another reoccurring argument with the braider who had already left, whom she got into an argument with. At this point I wanted to walk right out of the salon, considering their level of unprofessionalism, but I was too much of a coward to do so.
Now that episode was over too, it was almost time for the store to close, and some of the braiders had left as they got done with their customers. Lets just say it was party gossip/time, in front of me(customer), another adult customer, and a little girl customer, the rest of the braiders that was still working, now decided to hold a series of gossip about the braider who was fighting with the other, whom happen to have left the salon, as she was done with the front of my hair.
Senegalese twist, plus drama and filthiness = $220, now the owner who was checking me out, says I was paying with my visa card and the amount was two large, so a processing fee of $11, she advised I went to the gas station to withdraw cash, but I declined. Then she asked how much total do I want her to charge on my card plus tip, and I shyly answered $230, then she said oh the processing fee is $11, plus tip, so how much do you want to leave for tip? Then I said $251 which means $20 tips. In all I paid ($251) for the worst beauty salon experience of my life.
Ques: So now the question is, who is the fool?
Ans: Me (the customer) who sat through the drama, paid full price for it, and even left a $20 tip, to be split up between the two stylist.
Until customers refuse to pay, walk out, report salons and business, they won't know the magnitude of their actions/behaviors. No customer should act foolish and settle for less, you are paying for it. Without you, there would be no salon in business.
I wish they get a very big wake up fine from TDLR, for non compliance to sanitation rules and regulations.
Speak up or take action!!!
