But when you see a seafood heavy menu at a restaurant, you *really* should get it. I focused on their new menu of shrimp dishes. They included head-on shrimp, in the shells. I wasn't sure I wanted to work for my meal and get messy. But damn, that Camarones al Cilantro (shrimp with cilantro) looked fantastic. I hemmed and hawed and decided I would order it along with some guacamole to get some vegetable material in me. When it came it was piping hot. Couldn't eat it, so focused on the guac for a bit. As the shrimp cooled I went to town on what may have been the messiest meal of my life. (Do NOT order unpeeled shrimp if you are on a first date or a job interview) Let me tell you - these shrimp were unbelievable. They were swimming in sauce and as I peeled them, i then dipped and chowed. The cilantro/chili/garlic? sauce was off the charts good. The onions and cucumber buried within it were also a nice discovery as I made my way through this mountain of a full pound of shrimp. It took a while and the sauce dripped down to my elbows at times. It was a caveman eating experience and it was probably the best Mexican dish I have ever eaten. It was probably a good thing I was eating alone. I don't see any other way to eat this unless you're a psychopath crunching through shrimp shells. But leaving those shells on keeps the shrimp moist as they cook and more importantly it keeps the shrimp flavor from cooking off into the sauce. Shrimp with the shell on do taste better - they are not just being lazy here. This meal was great and I would love to go back if I'm driving through again. Thank you for this!

The lunch bento box is straight up hits: a California roll, shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, rice and your choice of teriyaki'd protein (chicken, salmon, beef, shrimp or basa, a type of catfish). I chose salmon, which was cooked perfectly. The salmon was placed on top of the rice, so the rice kind of soaked up the teriyaki sauce and made it nice and delicious. My bento lunch came with a cup of miso soup, and it was so nourishing and briny, like only miso soup can be. So yeah. I didn't taste any of the sushi here at Umi, unless you count a California roll, which I don't. But they have lots of different types of rolls, nigiri and hand rolls. Umi also has a large menu of sake. So large, that I thought I would be remiss to not get sake to go with my lunch. The menu made me do it! So I got the chiku bai Nigori sake, and it was so smooth. Sake is served in a small pitcher with a small ceramic cup. I wasn't sure if the sake pitcher was supposed to be shared, but there was only one cup, and there was only one me, so I went for it. A sake buzz during lunch ... how extravagant. I visited for a late lunch, around 1:30 p.m., and I was the only person in the whole place. I got the full attention of the very nice server, who had 20 pens in her apron ("For when it gets busy and it's only me," she said, because I asked her why she has 20 pens in her apron.) The restaurant is tastefully decorated on the inside.
