So I have heard many comparisons of Markie's to Schwartz's in Montreal. Although I would say that…read morethe smoked meat at Markie's is good, it is not Schwartz's good, lol. So I got the Combo #1 which is a jumbo smoked meat sandwich, fries, coleslaw, a pickle and a can of pop for $15.99. I like that the meat was lean, but it didn't have that firm texture that I like with smoked meat, it had a more deli meat texture. Nonetheless it was flavourful and smelled delicious. I wouldn't describe the sandwich as jumbo, but it was an ok size, not small. The rye bread was fresh and the amount of mustard on the sandwich was acceptable (not too much, but not skimpy). I really enjoyed the fries, which were really crispy. The coleslaw was regular mayo-based coleslaw. Service was friendly. There are a few tables to dine in. This location has been many restaurants over the years. Prior to Markie's it was a Greek place called Babinos (which was so good, I was disappointed that they closed), and prior to that it was a sandwich shop called Robz (was meh IMO), and prior to that it was a Chinese takeout joint called Ho-Lee-Pow (never tried), and before that it was a location of the famous Chinese takeout chain Ho-Lee-Chow (didn't need to try, lol). It's been 5 different places over the last 13 years. When I started writing this I thought the turnover was high, but now that I think about it, I guess it not too bad. The location is in a strip mall with a few other food places (Mr Sub, Gabriel Pizza and Shish Kabab House). Lots of free parking.

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. The bread is a crusty kaiser and always tastes fresh. They usually have some bread in a basket behind the counter to make the sandwiches, but when they are out, they ask you to get a bun from the place where they sell the buns which is on a wire shelf that does not look very sanitary. However, the lady puts on gloves when she makes your sandwich and removes the gloves when handling the cash. Big points for this. If they kept their bulk buns in a more hygienic place they would get even bigger points from me. They sell lots of candy and cookies from Poland and they also have lots of Polish desserts. Also deli meats. Great place to grab a tasty sandwich in the Byward Market if you don't feel like standing in line at La Bottega.

The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

Prepare to be amazed............... We had heard about his place for months and how awesome it was so we finally decided to try it out. When we got there at mid-day on a Saturday there was a line up out the door. My wife suggested we go for a walk to let the line thin out a but. We got back and the line had thinned out so we went in. They have a set number of sandwiches and you can also make your own, but we decided to try their set sandwiches. I got the Parkdale and the Holland, my wife got the Bayswater, and we picked up a Scott for my daughter. When we got home, we were nothing short of blown away. The quality of the sandwich was amazing - the bread was light and fluffy, a ton of meat, fresh veggies, great sauces, just incredible quality. More importantly, fantastic value for money. Even more importantly, the staff were wonderful - they chatted with us but kept the line moving - super professional and friendly. The quality of the sandwiches here rivals Old Tyme - no word of a lie. The bread they use is very very close to what we had in Lafayette and the quality of the fillings is outstanding. Don't walk, run to this place. It will change your life for what you think about sandwiches.

ARRIVAL: -I was in Ottawa from nyc for a couple days for work in September of 2022 (last year). I wrote this review then, but forgot to post it. -I came here in the afternoon on a weekday. There were a few tables occupied, but the place was largely empty. -When I was there, it was not actually open 24 hours. I could not find the hours posted anywhere online. Google maps and several other places still listed it as 24-hour. I showed up around 11pm the night before, found out they were closed, and saw the hours posted on the door. So I came back the next day. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the Reuben w/ home fries because I wanted to try some of their "famous" smoked meet. -The sandwich tasted good and was a good amount of food for the price, but overall the quality was very average. The meat was sliced super thin, had a rubbery texture, and did not have a lot of flavor. -The home fries I had with the Reuben were above average though: perfectly crispy cubes of potato with soft, fluffy insides. SERVICE: -Servers were friendly and capable. ATMOSPHERE: -It's sort of like a mix of a sports bar and a diner. There are tons of tables and booths like a diner or chain restaurant, but with decor and style more like a bar. -The only real problem with my experience here is that there were wasps flying around my table. I was sat near a window and it was a nice day so all the doors and big windows were open. I know they were wasps because there were several of them, they landed on my table a few times, and I killed one. I know there's not a lot a restaurant can do about flying bugs like that, but they were there when I arrived and they were there an hour later when I left. I don't understand how no one noticed them or why they would still sit me near a window if they did. Maybe they mistook them for flies or bees, but either way someone could have offered to move me when they saw there were so many bugs flying around my area. One of the servers even commented on them as he walked by and then opened up more windows. I assume he was trying to give the wasps more ways to leave, but it just let in more. It really ruined my experience because I worried about getting stung and about them getting on my food the whole time.
