The building itself is like a bizzaro museum. It is breathtaking. Seriously, this place is so freaking cool. There are three stories of eclectic architecture cobbled together from a couple of OLD buildings in Durham. It feels like you're in an old money crazy person's Victorian era fantasy world somewhere in Europe. There is a conservatory in the center of it all, with a tropical palm that towers the full three stories above a perfect little pond. I'm CERTAIN there are hidden passageways and secret doors in this place that undoubtedly lead to mysterious chambers where all manner of twisted and delightful treasures were once stored and insane rituals took place. This is the closest I've come to my dream house in real life. The antiques themselves are very high-end 200 year old Victorian stuff. There are $20,000 sideboards mixed in with $2,000 lamps. A lot of the stuff has obviously had damage restored, which seems reasonable considering the age, and the fact it is a hidden antique shop in Chapel Hill. Check this place out. I've driven by Streets of London for months, always meaning to stop in…read more This place is amazing if you're in the market for antiques from Europe (or from early America) circa 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. I've been searching for some smaller pieces for my downsized abode and haven't been too enamored of one store, yet. That may change now that I've seen what Streets of London has available. SLA carries some beautiful Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, and early American furniture, some with the most exquisite carvings. They truly are works of art. There was a mirrored Victorian organ, a French mirrored armoire, and a 1940s era silk embroidered sofa, that I could not stop staring at. And for the sofa, I know I'd be sitting on the floor in front of it, admiring the detailing; probably defeating the purpose of having something that nice. There isn't just furniture here, either. For whatever period, there's art, lithographs, bed frames -- brass and wood, glass punch bowls, silver tureens, china, and tea services. One silver tea service was the type with the pot on a hinged device where it could be tipped for pouring without having to be picked up. That was the first time I've seen one of those up close. Although I was completely stunned at how many gorgeous pieces I saw, most of them were far too big for my available space. That's where the owner, Gill, came to my rescue. She told me the smaller pieces were always the first to be sold, but she was expecting another shipment later this year. As she's trying to sell down her inventory in advance of the new shipment, she tempted me sorely by telling me she may be willing to deal on some of the existing inventory. I now have a reason to go back besides just for a visual treat in the genre of wood. Until then, if there's any way I can make that organ or sofa fit . . . where did I put that measuring tape and yardstick. . . .

One couch we really liked we were told was available in their warehouse - woohoo! We talked, asked questions and purchased. It was carefully delivered by one of the owners and their son not even a week later. So happy with our purchase- we excellent quality and just what we didn't know we were looking for. Thank You! The new location is just up the street about a block or two. My husband and I like mid-century modern furniture so Area has been on our list to check out for a while. I had been to their Greensboro location before, but never their Durham location. The store is fairly large with a concentration on couches and chairs. We went in look for a desk and they really only had one option so it wasn't a big hit for us. We liked quite a few of the light fixtures so we will probably be heading back in to purchase those. The person working who I am assuming is the owner was friendly, as others have said he was happy to answer questions, but not pushy at all.
