They send you check-in instructions by email and text. Be aware--THERE ARE STAIRS to get up to the rooms. This is pretty common for hostels though. The room I was in--4 bed women only dorm--was clean. The door to get in had a number keypad for security and they also had small lockers for your stuff...bring your own lock though! I liked that the beds each had a little curtain for additional privacy. Bed sheet and towel are included as part of your stay/standard room rate. They had a group chat you can join on WhatsApp. Met some cool people to hangout with. Also, most people I ran into within the common areas were really nice. Additionally, tons of restaurants and bars are in the area. Maybe the only inconvenience is that their kitchen area is closed until 7 or 8 am. If you're planning on waking up early for excursions, that might be something you need to plan around.

It was very clean and well stocked (utensils, dishes, dish soap) and the staff are very pleasant. I stayed during the off season so it was very quiet. They house have great suggestions posted for food, beaches, bars etc. they are with in walking distance of a lot of different shops and eateries. they also have a rooftop which is where the bar is located. He is probably starving for charging money for every little thing. - I haven't seen any real employee there. My girlfriend and I felt very lucky to have found this place. This was our first trip to the island…read moreof Culebra and we took the ferry ride from Fajardo to get there. We ended up not arriving until about 9:30pm. Well as it turns out the island basically shuts down about that time, so we had no way to get to Flamenco Beach, where we intended to camp for the week. So at this point we were stranded. Luckily, a guy named Eric who worked at a dive shop in Fajardo gave us Tommy's number in case we needed a place to stay in Culebra. Tommy owns and runs the hostel. Tommy was very pleasant to deal with, and after I described the situation, he offered us a discount on a private room. The great news was that the hostel is just a 3-5 minute walk from the ferry, so we could make it without a cab. The hostel portion of Culebra International is a large dorm style room with bunk beds. There is also a community kitchen where you can keep drinks cold or cook. I took some pictures of the areas. They looked well taken care of and clean. My girlfriend and I stayed in one of the private rooms, which had a queen size bed as well as a bunk bed, and a private bathroom. The room was very clean, and has a window air conditioning unit that works quite well. We had planned to camp out all week at Flamenco Beach, but ended up coming back to stay the night before we left Culebra because it was nice to have the comforts of A/C and a bed, and be close to the ferry. Tommy was a great host. He was willing to give us a ride to Flamenco the next day, and to the airport (we decided to fly back to the big island instead of messing with the ferry) on our last day. We paid a small fee for the rides, so it was not unlike hiring a cab, but much more convenient as he was already there. I highly recommend renting a jeep (~$65/day) or golf car ($45/day) while you are in Culebra, as the island may be small but you definitely will want some transportation to go exploring. Tommy also offered complimentary coffee to me each morning, which was very nice. Other things to consider: - Culebra International is about 50 yards from the biggest grocery store on the island, and 15 yards from one of the two gas stations which also has a small convenience store. - The private rooms go for about $65-$75 depending on time of year. The cheapest room elsewhere in the off-season is $90+. - Tommy is from Louisiana originally, so no language barrier to deal with. - Tommy is happy to tell you about the island or where to go. He also offers laundry service and is a very enjoyable person to work with. If you have any other questions about Culebra, feel free to message me. I'm pretty sure I saw everything it has to offer during my week stay!

What an amazing place, the hostel is clean, it's well decorated and the staff is amazingly helpful and friendly. I visited last year August 2016 I made friends with Michael (owners son) the family was so nice and caring. They would give us rides to nearest beaches, such as Tamarindo, flamenco and they where even nice enough to have my over for lunch. Long story short, this is the place to go to! I was a bit nervous to go to a hostel since I'd never been to one till then. I highly recommend this place, if you're a solo traveler it's a must do. I made so many friends on the Island! I want to go back! And when I do I will be staying here for sure! Thank you!

Terrible, dirty and unorganized hostel…read more I stayed three nights in this place and have nothing positive to say. On the night of my arrival (11pm), I wandered around the hostel asking "Do you work here?" to everyone that I saw. None of the people I encountered worked at the hostel, nor had any idea of who did. Eventually, while standing by the counter downstairs, I called the hostel's phone. After 10 or so rings, a man wearing a towel and looking hungover stumbled down the stairs. Apparently, this was the manager. He showed me to my mixed-sex dorm which stank of cigarette smoke and mold, while handing me a bundle of sheets and telling me to help myself. None of the power chargers in the room worked... They advertise themselves as being the only hostel in PR with AC and memory foam mattresses....but the AC doesn't work and the mattresses smell like piss and body odor. The showers have an impossibly weak flow. Only half of the water faucets are functional- not including the one in the kitchen or the one in first floor bathroom. The whole place smells like cigarette smoke and is infested by mosquitoes- even in the rooms. Additionally, the hostel is totally unlocked and available for anyone to walk in during the day or night-- which is consequently bad since it is bordered on one side by a slum and on the other side by Ponce de Leon, a neighborhood crawling with policemen and prostitutes. This hostel also offers what it refers to as "free breakfast". This "breakfast" is a combination of old, crusty white bread and jam. There were three flavors of jam available during my stay...and each of them contained a nasty, never washed, fingerprint covered, sticky and dusty butter knife for spreading. Finally the staff is lazy, difficult to find and generally lacking in any knowledge if the area...and honestly just seem to be a bunch of free loading, drunk, pot smoking teenagers.

The beds are a bit creaky, but comfortable. The AC in the bedroom works and keeps the room cool (though the bunk next to the AC unit is freezing). The two bathrooms and kitchens are entirely functional. There's free WiFi (and it's pretty fast even with 18+ of us sharing it!), a cab company across the street, and busy neighborhoods and the beach are all very close by. Some areas that could be improved - the patios can get really dusty, and the hostel has a very open architecture which makes the common spaces get hot and humid during the day. Finally the "free breakfast" in the mornings is nothing to boast about - we've been cooking our own. All in all though; cheap, comfortable, safe, convenient - albeit a little dirty.
