Overall for the price, this place is worthwhile if you are on a budget. Nothing fancy and it's clean. New owners, Kurt and Kelly, bought the place 7 months ago and are in the process of making renovations. Our initial impression was great. Everyone we came across was very nice and pleasant (except for Kelly, one of the owners, which I will get to). We stayed in room 5 closest to the kitchen/bar area. First morning, we are woken up by workers talking loudly outside our door and slamming doors (the doors were swelling due to the humidity, so understood). We approached Kelly to ask if we could cancel the rest of our stay after telling our story and she directed us to speak with Kurt. (Side note: my wife is pregnant and this is our babymoon and all we want is to be able to sleep in on our vacation) Her attitude was borderline annoyed and passive aggressive. Kurt told us we could cancel but he could only refund us 100 dollars for our 5 night stay. Ok, no problem. He then offered to move us to another room away from any potential noise. Sweet! We chatted him up and he was great. Very accommodating. So we move into the room and everything seems ok. We go out for the day and come back to our air conditioning not being cold at all. We wait a few hours to see if it improves but it's still barely cold. It's extremely humid here right now and 85-90 degrees and the windows to our room are not sealed completely (blinds). On the way out to dinner. I approach Kelly nicely with a smile and ask if she can have someone check out the air conditioner. She blew me off completely and asked if we left the air conditioning running all day. Call me crazy but are we really expected to turn the AC off in a room we are paying to stay in which was advertised as having AC?! What if we wanted to stay in the room all day? Were we supposed to sweat ourselves into misery? Not to mention but when we returned from our excursions the AC was ironically set to FAN ONLY. She then proceeded to tell me the rooms originally didn't have AC and that they put them in (not sure what the point of that was) and that's the way the air conditioners are (apparently not cold at all). She then told us she could put us back into our original room which was just patronizing at that point and unnecessary. If this is the attitude any owner is going to take with their guests, the business is going to fail. Air conditioning that works (if you're going to advertise that you have it) and being able to sleep past 7AM shouldn't be too much to ask for. There are plenty of people that are going to be much worse to deal with than us. Save yourself the time and stress on vacation, spend some more, and stay at the malecon or hacienda tamarindo if you come to Vieques. Kudos to everyone at Bananas, but Kelly is the problem.

Pretty gross for what they charge. I have stayed in many hostels which are much nicer. I don't want…read moreto wear shower shoes and be afraid to put my bags down if I am paying this much. Good location across from water.

My girlfriend and I felt very lucky to have found this place. This was our first trip to the island…read moreof Culebra and we took the ferry ride from Fajardo to get there. We ended up not arriving until about 9:30pm. Well as it turns out the island basically shuts down about that time, so we had no way to get to Flamenco Beach, where we intended to camp for the week. So at this point we were stranded. Luckily, a guy named Eric who worked at a dive shop in Fajardo gave us Tommy's number in case we needed a place to stay in Culebra. Tommy owns and runs the hostel. Tommy was very pleasant to deal with, and after I described the situation, he offered us a discount on a private room. The great news was that the hostel is just a 3-5 minute walk from the ferry, so we could make it without a cab. The hostel portion of Culebra International is a large dorm style room with bunk beds. There is also a community kitchen where you can keep drinks cold or cook. I took some pictures of the areas. They looked well taken care of and clean. My girlfriend and I stayed in one of the private rooms, which had a queen size bed as well as a bunk bed, and a private bathroom. The room was very clean, and has a window air conditioning unit that works quite well. We had planned to camp out all week at Flamenco Beach, but ended up coming back to stay the night before we left Culebra because it was nice to have the comforts of A/C and a bed, and be close to the ferry. Tommy was a great host. He was willing to give us a ride to Flamenco the next day, and to the airport (we decided to fly back to the big island instead of messing with the ferry) on our last day. We paid a small fee for the rides, so it was not unlike hiring a cab, but much more convenient as he was already there. I highly recommend renting a jeep (~$65/day) or golf car ($45/day) while you are in Culebra, as the island may be small but you definitely will want some transportation to go exploring. Tommy also offered complimentary coffee to me each morning, which was very nice. Other things to consider: - Culebra International is about 50 yards from the biggest grocery store on the island, and 15 yards from one of the two gas stations which also has a small convenience store. - The private rooms go for about $65-$75 depending on time of year. The cheapest room elsewhere in the off-season is $90+. - Tommy is from Louisiana originally, so no language barrier to deal with. - Tommy is happy to tell you about the island or where to go. He also offers laundry service and is a very enjoyable person to work with. If you have any other questions about Culebra, feel free to message me. I'm pretty sure I saw everything it has to offer during my week stay!

What an amazing place, the hostel is clean, it's well decorated and the staff is amazingly helpful and friendly. I visited last year August 2016 I made friends with Michael (owners son) the family was so nice and caring. They would give us rides to nearest beaches, such as Tamarindo, flamenco and they where even nice enough to have my over for lunch. Long story short, this is the place to go to! I was a bit nervous to go to a hostel since I'd never been to one till then. I highly recommend this place, if you're a solo traveler it's a must do. I made so many friends on the Island! I want to go back! And when I do I will be staying here for sure! Thank you!

I can't agree with the other reviewer more on the fact that it is quite possibly the awesome-est place to stay ever...and very difficult to describe the overwhelming amount of charm. time kinda stops (which is really nice if you are on vacation.) if you enjoy languid porch swings, fluffy clouds, beautiful views, sunkissed cheeks, peaceful hammocks, rum drinks, floating in water, watching lizards, carefree afternoons, sweet tropical fruits, beach glass, cat-naps + quiet-time this is the place for you! we didn't have to share a bathroom, because we rented the cabanita. it has it's own bathroom - a private outdoor shower. (oh bliss!) a tiny kitchenette...with fridge and two burner stove + it's own front porch. La Finca has many options for different types of travelers. The community house has shared bathrooms and kitchen and some little bed rooms like a hostel. It has a breezy open indoor/outdoor quality and plenty of perfect spots for a nap. There are larger more "luxury" cabins also that are secluded and less communal throughout the property... OR you and 49 of your closest friends could rent the entire place for a week! this option would be great for a big party, retreat, family re-union, wedding, yoga intensive, etc. -the salt water pool is amazing! it feels healing for your skin and doesn't stink like chlorine! but none of it is what you might be used to. the linens and towels don't match, there are no tvs, internets, newspapers, telephones, etc. no one wears shoes that much. they might rent you a convertible car without a top (and it might rain that day.) people are so completely laid back that there isn't even glass in any the windows! i felt really lucky to have landed in such a beautiful, down to earth place. The Inn Keepers are super kind and helpful and will make you feel right at home. Go when it isn't tourist season (late spring+summer) and you will find yourself totally alone on a crystal clear blue beach swimming with tropical fish for hours at a time. We felt so free, we got naked! La Finca and all of the island is really pretty rural -you'll have to be able to entertain yourself. bring books, instruments, crafts, bikes, rafts and bug spray! all we did the entire time we were there was: read, swim, drink, eat, drive around beach hopping and sleep. a real relaxing vacation!!! my only beware: the non-puerto rican transplants that have spent entirely too much time in the sun and burnt some of their brains off can talk/get/act/look really wacky. BUT: If you have never felt a trade wind, seen the stars without light pollution, taken a dip with glowing phytoplankton, photographed wild ponies or eaten a fresh tamarindo....you really have no idea what you are missing.

But regardless they offered to help arrange a taxi from the airport which was so nice, and then watched over our luggage while we explored the island until checkin (4pm). I have to highlight, when they say "unplugged" it means it - there is no tv in the room, wifi/cell is spotty and temperamental outlets, apparently common to the island, little nuances we hadn't expected, but dealt with. Our king room with lanai ocean views was exactly that! Once we got used to being "unplugged" we throughly enjoyed our stay. The brunch and dinner restaurant are very convenient. The bar is highly recommended/known by locals, as is the resort. A fabulous pool and beach access - the facility provided beach towels and chairs you can carry to the beach. After a long day exploring we'd either shut the curtains and cool off or sit on the lanai enjoying the views, warm breeze and watching the wild horses. The guest services were polite and helpful. Couple downsides was we're having issues with the WiFi. And I also didn't like that there was no bathroom door. Unfortunately when we went there was a ton of seaweed on the black sand beach so it didn't look to nice but again that's not something they can control. But other than that. It is very close to the airport and everything else in San Juan. If you plan to stay mostly in San Juan you could get away with just ubering but we did rent a car. There is not lot but we had no problem finding street parking for the week that we stayed. We stayed in the Muse room. To be honest, this was expensive and more than I would have liked to spend but the hotel was so good it was worth it. You are a block from the beach and they provide beach towels and chairs. We did two beach days near the hotel and it was honestly perfect. The beach is amazing, very blue even though it's in the city. I felt perfectly safe walking around this area. It is technically in a gated community so it is very nice. Right outside the gated area are a bunch of restaurants. The food at dreamcatcher was also very good. They provide free coffee every morning and then pay as you go food from 8am-1pm. Everything I ate was very delicious. The menu changes frequently so if you see something that sounds good, get it! My favorite thing was the tofu huevos rancheros. It was incredible. They serve a dinner on Friday nights that was $65pp but we skipped to try some other things. The courtyard is also very cute, great place to get pictures and sit back and relax. I can't wait to come back. Puerto Rico has my heart!

We stayed here and splurged for what supposed to have a private bath, but discovered that it was on the front porch without covering so anyone waiting at the entrance for an uber could see easily in. They had a couple curtains but none in front of it which meant people from street could see in. We complained and asked if they could either give us a partial refund or even just get some removable hooks from a hardware store and put a sheet so people couldn't say in and they said no the owner would not like the aesthetics and would not be available to approve it. After much pestering they did give us free breakfast/free tour but it was honestly very upsetting and distressing to have been waiting for this great special room and then realize we couldn't full use it. The other thing is they advertise as vegetarian, vegan friendly which was great because I prefer to eat vegan when possible. The first day they had a vegan oatmeal that was good but by the second day their vegan menu had literally nothing with protein and by the third and fourth day it just had toast with veggies, which is something I could have gotten at any restaurant or hotel. They are not in the middle of nowhere, there are stores nearby and the manager also drives to visit their other properties. It's not that hard to have tofu or peanut butter or can of lentils that don't expire for months and you can continuously replace. I was so excited to support a veg establishment and feel bad I have to give it this review, but I want to protect full vegans.
