I figured it would be a convenient, can't-miss spot during our Kaua'i vacation. Unfortunately, it wasn't. We stopped by early on a Friday evening in early September. The place was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night (maybe the off-season after the summer crowds left), which should have been a good sign for service. I ordered the Loaded Fries with Chicken and my mom got the cheeseburger. The fries themselves were the highlight--crispy and fine on their own. Everything else went downhill from there. The chicken arrived cold and had an odd fishy taste (odd, since I don't believe fish is even on the menu). The pico de gallo tasted old. My mom's burger was nearly raw despite being ordered well done, and the tomato was so underripe she pulled it off and set it aside--pretty telling, since she loves tomatoes. Our server never returned to check on us, so we had no chance to mention any of this. Later that night some family and friends who'd been there before asked how it went. When we said the food was bad, they admitted they'd only ever gone for drinks. So the next evening we gave the bar a try. I ordered a Red Dirt Mai Tai and my mom had the Kalalau Skies (white rum, lime, pineapple, coconut cream). Both drinks were weak, poorly mixed, and overpriced. Watching a kid who looked barely of age prepare them didn't inspire confidence. We left disappointed again and headed back to the cottage so I could make a proper old fashioned myself. Hurricane Lowell cut the rest of the trip short, so we never got a third chance. I hope the restaurant weathered the storm and comes back stronger. Based on two visits, though--one for food, one for drinks--I can't recommend it. Convenient location, but the quality just wasn't there.
