Sunny was very responsive to both and was able to give me more background on this dog that they recently acquired from a high volume shelter in Newark, NJ. She was able to test the dog to see how it interacted with a dog and a cat. The process was very straightforward and painless. The adoption application was two pages and after it was submitted, we were able to set up an an appointment to meet with the dog. I am glad Sunny gave us her number because the GPS in our car did not really understand where the shelter was truly located. After we received assistance in seeing a landmark, we found the shelter which was a lovely place tucked at the end of a road with beautiful grounds to walk our dog with the shelter dog. The adoption fee was more than reasonable. After deciding that we would adopt the dog, we were given a soft enclosed carrier in which to transport our new dog home safely with our other dog in the back seat. (A great way to get involved, especially if you're not sure that you want to commit to a pet.) There is a huge support system for fosters like me, and they will even provide you with materials to get you started such as food and litter. I was adopting as my beloved canine partner and co-parent to my younger jack russell passed away following an extended illness. My small boy was eager for a play-mate. The first two dogs we were excited to meet were not a good fit for us and we thought it was a sign that it wasn't the right time. Until the lovely volunteer we were working with, Marie, introduced us to her foster pup. She had watched our interactions with other dogs and saw the personality of my JRT and his disposition and encouraged us to meet whom we now call Nancy. Nancy has a fear of men and a timid personality and thought my good natured boy would be the perfect companion to allow her to come out of her shell and shine. Best decision for me, my JRT and I think for Nancy too. I am forever grateful for these folks who go above and beyond to find the the best match for the animal and the family. An incredibly difficult job the volunteers do which I think is often overlooked. Thank you for completing our family!

Then March of this year, our 2nd boy passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Recently we decided we missed having two canine family members and set out to begin the search for a friend for our dog Daisy (also a rescue) and I knew about Eleventh Hour Rescue and the work they do for a while and had attended events like Puptoberfest. When we saw there was a Winter market happening at the Sussex fairgrounds, we got our pre-appoved application completed and attended the event with Daisy hoping to meet a particular dog. When it turned out the beautiful girl in question wouldn't be quite the right fit for our family, we came close to leaving and determined to search through other adoptable dogs with 11th Hour when we were asked if Daisy wanted to meet Jett, who we'd missed. We did an introduction and short walk together with one of the volunteers and our family. It became quickly apparent that these two would become fast friends and he was super friendly immediately with our whole family. Jett came home with us that day and immediately seemed to feel right at home. But he wasn't answering to his name, so we bounced a bunch around and thought we'd have to use a process to change it, but we came up with Remmington III (Remmy casually) and he began answering to that almost immediately. We are on day 3 and we all couldn't be happier. Everyone who volunteers with Eleventh Hour from the pre-approval process to the event staff were so welcoming, encouraging and wonderful. They do a fantastic job of vetting potential adopters so that each animal finds their perfect furever home. I would recommend anyone searching for a furry family member to consider them.

Erin and Russ took Kenny in and nursed him back to physical and mental health, then brought him over to visit with our other senior chihuahua when we said we were looking for a second dog. They worked with us as we acclimated Kenny to our home environment, and gave us detailed instructions on how to treat Kenny's dental and gastrointestinal issues (luckily both pretty minor at this point thanks to all the work that Next Chance put into his recovery). Erin and Russ quickly became friends, and their love and commitment to animals is such an inspiration. We can't recommend them highly enough, or thank them enough for connecting us with the newest member of our family!!

So I made another purchase for the orthopedic jumbo sized (this bed is huge). I called Chewy and told them of my situation needing to purchase a larger bed and return the XL orthopedic bed. They were so helpful with my return and empathetic to my dog's medical situation. I told them, it's already boxed up and ready to be shipped back, but they are so caring due to the fact they told me to donate it to the local shelter or humane society. I did some quick research on Yelp--of course-- and found the closest shelter was Eleventh Hour Rescue and their Roxbury location was just minutes away!! The lady (I believe her name was Ana), she was helpful and friendly as I told her why I was donating it. The transaction was very quick. It's always nice to give free donations to organizations that support neglected or abandoned animals. Donated a new dog bed and an open box pee pads (3/4 full). She was very appreciative of the donation.

Despite operating with limited resources, this team runs an incredibly tight, caring operation. What sets them apart is how deeply they care about each animal's welfare and not just getting animals through the door, but making sure they find the right home. Even when it's difficult and time-consuming, they take the time to carefully match each animal with the right family, rather than rushing adoptions just to clear space. Everyone here is a true animal lover through and through, and it shows in everything they do. The volunteers are kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in the animals they care for. After volunteering here for months now, and I can say with confidence: this rescue punches way above its weight. She referred someone to help us trap a feral cat in our neighborhood that just had 6 kittens and then took all seven of them into the shelter for spay/neutering and care. All the kittens were adopted and mama was returned to our neighborhood under our care. We were able to visit our feline family while they were cared for at the shelter. The shelter is clean and bright on the inside where the animals are kept and the staff and volunteers are wonderful in how they interact with all of the animals. They also have someone who works with the larger dogs on behavior and commands to improve their chances of adoption. When the time comes for us to adopt another dog (we prefer large breeds), the Wayne Animal Shelter will be our first stop.
